The Church and Benedictine Monastery St Mary's
Pomena, Mljet National Park
Pomena, tucked in on the picturesque island of Mljet, features an array of natural geographical highlights that enchant visitors with their beauty and serenity. From its crystal-clear waters to lush greenery, Pomena captivates with its stunning landscapes. The town serves as the gateway to Mljet National Park, home to the island's iconic saltwater lakes, Veliko and Malo Jezero. These pristine lakes, surrounded by dense forests and craggy cliffs, offer a tranquil oasis for swimming, kayaking, biking and hiking. Additionally, the nearby Odysseus Cave, steeped in legend, invites exploration with its mesmerizing turquoise waters and dramatic rock formations.

The highlight of Mljet Island is the Mljet National Park…and the top sights are the two saltwater lakes: Malo Jezero (Small Lake) and Veliko Jezero (Great Lake). On the south side of Veliko Jezero is the Island of St. Mary, which is home to a 12th century monastery. Trails encircle both lakes – which are connected by a small bridge in the middle – and visitors can walk or bike around the lakes. Tickets are required for entry into Mljet National Park.
