UNO CLACS Kaqchikel Maya Summer Language Program continued ...
During the four-week program, students experienced interactive classes on Kakchiquel conversation and grammar; lectures from Mayan archeology, history and anthropology; and field trips including a visit to the pre-Columbia Kaqchikel capital of Iximche. In addition, they were treated to a series of lectures with renowned anthropological linguist, Tulane professor Judity Maxwell. On their time off, the group explored Antigua Guatemala, hiked and climbed the Agua Volcano that dominates the landscape.
The program was life-changing for our students. One said, “It was truly a blessing to study abroad in Guatemala – it is an unforgettable episode that shifted my perspective on a lot of things.” Another remarked that she “and the others got to learn [the Kaqchikel language] from those who still want their own culture (language) to continue and are thrilled to share it. A beautiful experience overall.”
The UNO CLACS plans to continue this program and to promote indigenous language education in Central America and the United States in the years to come.
