According to the Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network, every 68 seconds, there is a sexual assault in the United States. Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners (SANEs) are the ones called to emergency rooms and urgent care centers to interview, collect evidence and document the findings of these assaults.
This hybrid online/in-person adult/adolescent Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) didactic training program is geared toward the Registered Nurse or Advanced Practice Registered Nurse planning on practicing in the role of SANE. Students must have a minimum of an RN license before beginning this course. This course meets the International Association of Forensic Nurses (IAFN) SANE Education Guidelines and provides 40 contact hours in nursing upon completion. 16 hours of online course prework to be completed before the 24 hours (three eight-hour days) of in-person lectures at KU Medical Center.
Registration Cost(s):
This course (Oct 2024 didactic) is offered free of charge, thanks to funding provided by the ANE-SANE Grant through the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). The Pittsburg State University, Irene Ransom Bradley School of Nursing was awarded this grant to support the recruitment, training, and certification of nurses in forensic exams, along with multidisciplinary training to enhance the care of sexual assault survivors in Kansas.
The grant funds are primarily intended for Kansas nurses. However, there may be an opportunity for non-Kansas nurses to be covered as well. Program organizers will reach out to you after registration to determine your eligibility. Please note that non-Kansas nurses should still expect to pay the registration fee, which will be $175 for the didactic portion, if they are deemed ineligible for Kansas grant funds.
