According to the Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network, every 68 seconds, there is a sexual assault in the United States. Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners (SANEs) are the ones called to emergency rooms and urgent care centers to interview, collect evidence and document the findings of these assaults.

This hybrid online/in-person adult/adolescent Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) didactic training program is geared toward the Registered Nurse or Advanced Practice Registered Nurse planning on practicing in the role of SANE. Students must have a minimum of an RN license before beginning this course. This course meets the International Association of Forensic Nurses (IAFN) SANE Education Guidelines and provides 40 contact hours in nursing upon completion. 16 hours of online course prework to be completed before the 24 hours (three eight-hour days) of in-person lectures at KU Medical Center.

The ANE-SANE Grant through the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) aims to provide better physical and mental health care treatments for survivors of sexual assault and domestic violence. Pittsburg State University, Irene Ransom Bradley School of Nursing, was awarded a three-year HRSA ANE-SANE Grant in 2018 and then received a three-year extension in 2021. Grant funds are used to recruit, train, and certify nurses for forensic exams and to provide multidisciplinary training and facilitate collaboration with all entities responsible for the care of sexual assault victims in Kansas.
