LGBTQ+ And Free: Queer Books in the Era of Book Bans

What does it mean to be a queer reader, librarian, and writer in an era rife with bathroom bills, book censorship, and drag bans? These queer authors and publishers will talk frankly about the challenges of being in the book business, the vital role librarians play in their stewardship of queer communities, and how queer traditions of collectivism, activism, and organizing can help protect us in a quickly changing world.

Amplify! Read Up, Speak Out!

Dion Lim, two-time Emmy Award winner and news anchor of ABC7 News in San Francisco, has been on the frontlines of reporting on anti-Asian violence since the pandemic began in 2020. In Amplify! My Fight for Asian America (Third State Books, October 2024), the first book published on the topic of anti-Asian hate and the AAPI community's response to the phenomenon, she emphasizes how important it is for Asian Americans and their allies to speak up and have a voice.
Dion will be joined by Emmy Award-winning Asian American journalist and author Dr. Seema Yasmin. The two will discuss the ways in which books such as Amplify! can help counter harmful narratives and stereotypes that contribute to misunderstandings and violence against our communities.
Jaena Rae Carbera, current president of the Asian Pacific American Librarians Association, and Stephanie Lim and Charles Kim, Co-Founders of Third State Books, the only general-interest publisher in America dedicated to Asian American writers, will discuss what librarians and publishers can do to help foster cross-cultural understanding and collaboration.
