This distinction – earned among a record 901 hospitals evaluated – underscores our commitment to delivering high-quality, evidence-based care for expectant families. These public ratings play an important role in helping parents, together with their prenatal care providers, make informed decisions about where to receive maternity care. Jennifer Winston, a health data scientist at U.S. News, said the rankings are based on objective quality measures. “Parents can use these ratings to compare hospitals in their community, including C-section rates, severe unexpected newborn complications, availability of lactation consultants, NICU services, and midwife or doula support,” Winston said.
U.S. News evaluates how well hospitals perform in childbirth using C-section rates, newborn severe complication rates, routine vaginal birth after cesarean delivery (VBAC) rates, episiotomy rates, best practices to support breast milk feeding, whether a hospital meets federal criteria for "birthing-friendly" practices, and whether a hospital tracked and reported disparities in outcomes. In 2026, 495 top hospitals for Maternity care have been recognized as High Performing.
