Plans for STARS Resale Shop to Move
The STARS Resale Shop (SRS) has been operating at a storefront on College Avenue for the past 11 years. During that time, it has provided inexpensive clothing and furnishings to thousands of shoppers. It has also provided an opportunity to witness to those shoppers who do not yet believe. One of the purposes of the SRS is to provide financial support to STARS Family Services, which operates three residential homes for men and women with intellectual disabilities. This has been very successful, as SRS has donated more than $500,000 to STARS Family Services through the years.
STARS Disability Ministries is one of the best on-ramps to bring unreached people to the church. Many of our STARS, even those not living in one of the three houses, work at the Resale Shop and at Twice is Nice. This provides STARS with a chance to gain independence.
But the SRS storefront on College Avenue is now too small for the ongoing successful operation of SRS, and the staff has been looking forward to the opportunity to move into the Crossings building (the name we are now using for the Toms-Price building). In order for College Church and SRS to begin using the Crossings building, many improvements need to be made to the interior of the building, including two big firewalls and creation of new washroom facilities. Our general contractor estimates that these improvements will cost about $425,000.
This expenditure falls outside the regular ministry/missions budget that was approved by the congregation at the Annual Meeting in May. Accordingly, the Council of Elders has determined that the congregation should be given the opportunity to approve this budget. Thankfully, there is adequate cash available for these improvements without dipping into the funds donated through regular giving. The church has been accumulating excess cash from rental income that is not part of the ministry/missions budget.
The Council of Elders has called a special congregational meeting for Sunday, Dec. 6. The meeting will be held at 5:00 p.m. as a Zoom webinar. The purpose of the meeting is to give an update on our overall plans for the Crossings building and then to vote on the resolution to approve the capital expenditures totaling $425,000. The resolution reads as follows:
