Our Path Forward: The Campaign for Kenyon

Kenyon Class of 2015 Fall Class Letter

Dear classmates,

Lately, I know it can seem like good news is in short supply. As I sat down to write this class letter, and started to make a list of the many positive updates I had to share with you, I felt a welcome sense of gratitude for our alma mater. Even during the most challenging of years, Kenyon has remained a bright spot and a point of connection and positivity for its community.

Our class has continued the strong study habits formed on The Hill. Over half of our Fall Class Notes mention ongoing graduate studies. We also have maintained our affection for one another - Three Kenyon couples from our class have recently gotten engaged or married!

In-person instruction just wrapped up for the approximately 950 first-years, sophomores and international students who studied on campus this fall, numbers intentionally kept low so no one would share a room. (Yes, it took a pandemic for a freshman to score a North Campus Apartment for one.) The College developed clear COVID-related policies and protocols that included regular testing for those on campus and the implementation of the “Kenyon College Commitment,” a personal pledge developed in cooperation with the student council that emphasized the well-being of the entire community. Life on campus looked a bit different as Kenyon adapted its many facilities to ensure safe access to dining, athletics, research and more.

In addition to adaptations for on-campus instruction, juniors and seniors and members of the faculty discovered new ways to learn and teach remotely. (Yes, it took a pandemic to make sweatpants acceptable classroom attire for even the professors.) Check out our new faculty notes section to hear how your favorite faculty members dealt with the shift to Zoom classes, virtual office hours and online assignments.

Our alumni community has shifted to meet the challenges of 2020 with an equal degree of innovation — organizing and attending virtual events, connecting with current students and new graduates as volunteer mentors, and giving back during June’s record-breaking online giving challenge, Kenyon Together. (BTW — well done us for being part of the incredible young alumni response to that challenge. We spoke up and the College responded with new gift designations for the things that matter most to us. Let’s keep that momentum going and continue to look for ways to make the most of our dollars when we give to Kenyon.)  Planning is underway for Reunion Weekend 2021 and, if conditions allow, it could be the biggest alumni gathering in Kenyon history! (We’ll be sharing more details in the months to come, as all alumni will be invited back for the festivities.)

Yes, good things are happening at Kenyon and that is why young alumni support is crucial — to keep the good news coming. Our gifts help to bolster the student emergency assistance fund, which helped dozens of students get home when the spring semester unexpectedly went virtual. Our gifts make it possible for the College to award more in financial aid this year, when many families’ budgets are strained. And our gifts can help fund new scholarships like the Kenyon Women’s Annual Scholarship and the Lowry Annual Scholarship for underrepresented students, which was announced just last month along with the renaming of the Kenyon Athletic Center to honor Emeritus Trustee William E. Lowry Jr. ’56 H’99. Scroll on to read full details on this exciting piece of Kenyon news!

During challenging times like these, your support is more critical than ever. Join me in making your gift to the Kenyon Fund at gift.kenyon.edu to ensure good things continue to happen on the Hill this year, and in the years to come.

Thank you and stay well!

Sincerely,
Grant Carney

Introducing the Lowry Center & Scholarship

William E. Lowry Jr. ’56 H’99 was the first Black student in the nation initiated into Beta Theta Pi, was student body president and captained the football, basketball and baseball teams. He went on to serve in many volunteer roles at Kenyon, including as trustee. In honor of Bill’s accomplishments and impact at Kenyon, the Board of Trustees decided to rename the Kenyon Athletic Center in his honor.
Recognizing his legacy, Board Vice Chair Joseph E. Lipscomb ’87 has created an endowed scholarship in Bill’s name to help bring more underrepresented students to Kenyon. Anyone can make a gift to the annual fund portion of this scholarship, or one of many other scholarships at Kenyon, and provide an immediate benefit to a current student.
Support currents students now with a gift to scholarships
Despite a challenging year, the College remains committed to continuing to meet 100% of students’ increased demonstrated need, with donor support. Every dollar you give goes directly to support students this academic year.
Consider giving today in support of:
  • Hannah More Scholarship for first generation students
  • Kenyon Women’s Annual Scholarship for female students
  • Lowry Annual Scholarship for underrepresented students
  • Pope Memorial Annual Scholarship for students from urban Ohio public school
And, of course, you can make a gift to the Kenyon Fund’s scholarships and financial aid designation, which supports the education of every single Kenyon student.

Class of 2015 Fall Notes

Haley Acker: After completing Physician Assistant (PA) school, she just moved back to Portland, Maine with her fiancé to start a job as a Neonatal Intensive Care PA at Maine Medical Center. They are also planning on getting a puppy this fall/early winter!

Edgar Arceo: Eddi is in his second and final school year at Deerfield Academy, where he has taught Spanish while completing a Master's of science in education. While not proud of it, he is officially a master-Zoomer, seeing that all of his classes can be found recorded on the platform. However, the upside to our societal move to virtual-living: throughout the summer, many of the Kenyon soccer bros logged on to Zoom at 8AM, MWF, to do virtual workouts together. “Shout-out to the KCMS fellas of 2012-2018 for the burpees and banter. Shout-out to Anabel Yahuitl Garcia '14 and Kristina Miklavic '14 for being the most human humans I've ever met. Warm prayers for Miguel (Alvarez Flatow) Del Toro '14. And wishing everyone a peaceful November. Please vote, homies.”

Meredith Bentsen: This summer, Meredith celebrated her five-year anniversary at Brunswick Group, an advisory firm specializing in business-critical issues, and took on a new client development role at the firm. Outside of work, she started a food blog MBsTable.com and has enjoyed catching up with fellow Kenyonites over Zoom and at a distance.

Caroline Dultz: Caroline has worked in media marketing in New York for the past 5+ years; recently, she partnered pro bono with the Association for Frontotemporal Degeneration (AFTD), the charity tasked with researching and supporting those who suffer from FTD, a form of early-onset dementia. The team ideated the #FTDHotShotChallenge, a viral social media campaign that raised upwards of $50,000 for the AFTD and raised more mainstream awareness for this pernicious, but little-known disease. The Challenge was live across Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok, and garnered thousands of submissions from people around the world.

Jake Genachowski: A positive of the Pandemic has been the ability to stay in touch with classmates through the new Call of Duty game. Nick Gasbarro, Garrison Anderson, Jack McDonald, and Pat Brady ‘14 have been playing countless hours together.

Lila Greco: Lila finished her PhD in math at Cornell University in August 2020. She is now living in Boston working as an actuarial assistant for Berkshire Hathaway Specialty Insurance. She is looking forward to an eventual Class of 2015 reunion post-COVID-19, but in the meantime, she has been enjoying all the stereotypical lockdown pastimes, such as cycling, hiking, chatting with friends on Zoom, and baking sourdough bread.

Jacob Hegge: Jacob gladly left Columbus, OH for London, U.K. in November 2018. He is currently working in finance and recently started tennis lessons.  Shout out to Alyssa LaFrenierre who got him moving and did online workouts with him throughout lockdown--she's the real MVP.

Drew Hogan: Drew has started his PhD program in political science at the University of Minnesota.  If you're in the Twin Cities, get in touch!

Mary Alice Jackson: Mary Alice is living in Washington D.C. with Spencer Kaye '14 and their dog Mookie, and just started a Masters of Social Work online at Columbia School of Social Work!

Ashlyn Johnson: Ashlyn is still a PR Manager at a small NYC based fashion consulting agency, but has been lucky enough to work remotely between Nashville and Brooklyn for the past few months. She is also a part-time psychology master's student where she is beginning a research study examining students' attitudes on in-school mental health services in the US school system. She can't wait to see all of her Kenyon friends again soon!

Alyssa LaFrenierre: Graduated Physician Assistant school from the Medical University of South Carolina and is now a certified and licensed Physician Assistant!

Aidan Lee: Aidan graduated with his PhD in physics in August from OSU, married Nicki Krzeminski '14 in the backyard in September, moved to Portland, Oregon in October, and started an engineering job at Intel in November. But he mainly played a bunch of golf.

Colin McMahon: Colin is finishing his last year of medical school at the University of Michigan with plans to pursue a residency in Emergency Medicine.

Katie Moss: When Katie’s principal asked her this past spring to switch from 5th to 7th grade she naively assumed she would be able to hide from the judgmental eye rolls of her 13 year olds from the comfort of her home, on Zoom. But, the Archdiocese of Chicago had other plans. So, now her days are equal parts saying “mask over your nose,” “6 feet apart,” “no iPad games during class” and “no filming TikToks in school” (oh and “camera on please” to the kids who decided to stay home). It’s been a long first trimester.

Adriana Olivares: Adriana recently moved back home to Chicago after spending two years in Boston, and is working at Bain & Company in their recruiting team. She will be getting "Kenyon married" to Aleks Rosnev ‘13 next year, after having to postpone the wedding due to COVID-19. Yosselin Melgar, Syeda Showkat, Patricia Mota ‘16, Karin Cao, and Gabriella Alziari will be the bridal squad making sure Adriana doesn't pull a 'Runaway Bride'!

Christine Prevas: Christine is currently pursuing their PhD in English and Comparative Literature at Columbia University, with a research focus on queer gender and sexuality and the destabilization of the subject in popular horror media. In their spare time, they write essays, designs tabletop roleplaying games, and hosts a podcast with several other Kenyon alum.

Payton Schlicht: Payton graduated with her Masters of Arts in Teaching in May. She is currently virtually teaching a group of goofy fourth graders in her hometown of Waukegan, IL. In her free time, she hangs out with her puppy-sized lizard, Gulliver, and the rest of her strange menagerie of animals.

Paige Shermis: Paige is in the fourth year of optometry school and is currently doing a clinical rotation at the Indian Health Service Crow/Northern Cheyenne Hospital in Montana. Paige has been lucky to visit national parks almost every weekend, recently got engaged to fellow optometrist Nicholas Carr (an Ohio State alum) on top of a mountain, and looks forward to having many Kenyon friends at their wedding.

Anna Taylor (Sweeney): Anna Taylor (formerly Taylor Sweeney) lives and works in Philly. She fabricates custom conveyances for the transportation and storage of fine art objects.

Sara Thomas-Martinez: Sara Evans (Thomas-Martinez) and Hardy Evans graduated from medical school at the University of Cincinnati in May and have since moved to start new jobs in Detroit Michigan. Hardy is now a resident physician in Orthopedic Surgery at Henry Ford Hospital, and Sara is a resident physician in Pediatrics at Children's Hospital of Michigan.

Margaret Tucker: Margaret Tucker and Liam Cardon '16 got engaged in September while surrounded by Kenyon friends Max Beatty '16, Garrison Block '16, Brendan McGoldrick '14 and Weezie Foster '18

Ashley Yang-Thompson: Ashley is currently painting monumental genitals in Uncle Fingers' basement.

Hetty Borinstein: Hetty spent her summer reconnecting with other alumni through Kenyon Alumni Student Collective (KASC), an organization created to uplift BIPOC voices and support students at Kenyon while working to address Kenyon’s inadequacies. Kenyon has consistently failed to provide a safe and equitable environment for BIPOC, international, queer, trans, low-income, disabled, and first-generation students along with other marginalized groups.

Most recently, the Business Finance Committee has given $0 in funding to several affinity groups this semester, including BSU, KAI (Kenyon Asian Identities), FIGLI (First Generation and Low Income), and Indigenous Nations at Kenyon. If you would like to help affinity groups have funding you can donate to KASC’s mutual aid fund at https://kascmutualaid.carrd.co/.

To join our efforts in holding Kenyon accountable for its continued neglect and the harm it inflicts upon students you can contact kasckenyon@gmail.com

Note from Editors: There are myriad resources at Kenyon that exist specifically to address the needs of our BIPOC and other underrepresented students and the Division of Student Affairs is always available to address any concerns brought forth by current students. In a typical year, what student affinity groups receive is consistent with the percentage of student organizations they represent on campus, not 10 times less. This year, many requests from numerous organizations were denied because they did not meet specific health & safety guidelines that the College has established due to COVID-19. A gift to the Kenyon Fund is the only way to make a safe, secure and tax-deductible gift to the designation of your choosing at Kenyon.
