Kenyon Class of 2015 Fall Class Letter
| |
| Dear Classmates,
This happens every fall. It doesn’t matter where I am, but I begin to feel the chillier evening breezes, I hear the rustle of leaves hurried by the gentle wind behind them, I see the deep hues of red and orange emerge from the treetops– and I’m transported back to that old Hill. Images and sensations drawn from the same memory-well begin to spring up for me: inhaling the crisp air of a Middle Path walk, devouring the long conversations in Peirce, and gearing up with some green tea and honey for yet another late night at the library. The nostalgia is so good I can almost taste it– sweet like the last lick of a Bookstore ice cream. But whatever the season, Kenyon remains a sacred place in my heart because of the people I shared it with. Thus, it’s with an unrelenting sense of hope that I look forward to running into you on the Hill again soon!
And surely you have heard of the campus we will return to. Chalmers Library is open and beautiful! I drove through Kenyon this summer during a cross-country move back to the West Coast and was humbled by the transformations, both tangible and intangible, the College has undergone. As you can imagine, Chalmers, and all that it implies, rests at the center of that change. While I sincerely believe it would make any of us want to do another four years, I’m heartened by the fact that all four current classes are studying together again in Gambier this fall. (With a bonus first-year cohort finishing a semester in Copenhagen). Thankfully for us old-timers, plans are taking shape for an unforgettable Reunion 2022 on the Hill. (Mark your calendar for the weekend of May 27th. All alumni are invited to attend!)
In other exciting campus news, the College just shared its new strategic plan that will guide its planning and actions leading up to the bicentennial in 2024 and beyond. You will be pleased to see it includes core elements like developing a computer science program informed by the liberal arts; enrolling, retaining, and graduating a student body that is representative of the talent and diversity of our nation and the world; implementing a holistic approach to health and wellness, with an emphasis on mental health; and expanding its commitment to environmental responsibility. Like I said, transformative.
You have also likely heard the announcement of the Kenyon Access Initiative which will bring more high-achieving students to Kenyon thanks to a $25 million matching grant from the Schuler Education Foundation. This means that any amount we give through this Kenyon Access Initiative will be matched 1:1 and will go to a new scholarship for students from families with limited means and those ineligible for government aid — up to $25 million. This institutional priority holds a particular value in my heart: I myself would not have been able to attend
Kenyon without inclusive, far-sighted, and gracious programs that the Kenyon Access Initiative will only build upon.
Now I could go on for pages about these two pieces of Kenyon news, but lucky for you, I don’t have to. Scroll on to learn more about Kenyon’s strategic plan and the Kenyon Access Initiative (and how they fit into our 2024 bicentennial celebration).
As you read about what’s in store for Kenyon’s promising future, I hope you’ll call to mind the lasting impact your time at Kenyon has had on you these past six years, and consider supporting today’s students with a gift to the Kenyon Fund. Moreover, if you have the ability, I would strongly encourage you to make a special additional gift to the Kenyon Access Initiative that has the potential to bring 50 additional talented students to Kenyon each year.
Though it goes without saying, Kenyon couldn’t be Kenyon without involved and supportive alumni like us. Thus, as the bicentennial draws closer, an opportunity we are lucky to experience in our lifetimes, I graciously ask us all to consider doing a little more than we have in the past to help make Kenyon the special place it is. This could mean becoming an alumni volunteer, attending a College event, submitting a class note, or setting up a recurring monthly gift. Every bit that you offer of yourself makes a lasting difference to the College and the students who call it home.
In closing, I send you the warmest of wishes this fall season, along with some uplifting updates from some of your favorite Kenyon people.
With sincere fondness, Edgar Arceo

Gifts of all sizes add up: every year, gifts of $100 or less to the Kenyon Fund total more than $250,000. Alexandra Kruse
Alexandra Kruse recently evacuated from Hurricane Ida to vacation in a cabin in the woods with fellow classmates Virginia Falzon '14, Isobel Rosenberg '15, and Greta Greising '16, who now consider themselves to be Wisconsin cheese curd connoisseurs. Back in New Orleans, she is finishing up her last year of medical school with the hopes of becoming an OB/GYN. She hopes everyone is doing well in these unprecedented times, and more importantly, is vaccinated.
Alyssa LaFrenierre
I’m currently working in Akron, Ohio as an ENT Physician Assistant! I recently saw Calvin Lutz '14 and Natalie Parker '16 to celebrate their engagement in Pittsburgh, PA!!! Looking forward to all the Kenyon weddings coming up in the next year, including my own to Christian Josephson '16!!
Armand Hernandez
I am an English teacher.
Chris Whalen
Chris has surprised himself by moving back to NJ to take up a teaching position at The Lawrenceville School. He is working on a book and completing his Master's.
Claire Gaglione
Claire is in her third year of law school at The University of Cincinnati College of Law and plans to graduate with a JD in May, 2022. During her time in law school she worked as a fellow at the Ohio Innocence Project advocating for wrongfully convicted prisoners in Ohio. Currently, Claire works with UC's Domestic Violence and Civil Protection Order Clinic. She hopes to continue advocating for survivors of intimate partner violence throughout her legal career.
Colin Finnegan
Colin continues to live in Washington, DC with Cat Straley '17 and recently began his MBA candidacy at NYU Stern.
Edgar Arceo
This year has been a ride. In late winter, I got turned down for a Fulbright Fellowship (again!) in Spain – curse you Fulbright. In the spring I completed my Master’s from UPenn’s graduate school of education. In the summer, I spoke a lot of Spanish at Middlebury’s Language School before moving back to California. And this fall, I started a new job teaching Middle School Spanish at the Polytechnic School in Pasadena. We’ll see what the fall/winter have in store: I just moved in with my partner, and we’re freshly navigating how to co-exist in 600-square feet of space… with a fully grown labradoodle who lives off attention. So, if I don't write another verbose class note, you’ll know why–and where to look for the remains. Wishing everyone a cozy and peaceful holiday season!
Emily Sussman
Emily Sussman and Eddie Baxter are engaged. We know you’re either thinking “yay, finally” or “who?”
Hannah (Cooper) Stoyel
A big few months for us here in London! I got my Ph.D. in April (my focus was Eating Disorders in Athletes) and gave birth to our daughter, Felicity, in May! Being a mom (or mum here) is amazing…as cliche as it sounds! So thankful for our sweet girl. Now trying to figure out how to balance work and family life in a whole new way.
Janie Simonton
Janie Simonton got engaged to Nate Epstein ‘16 in August 2021!
Katie Finnigan
Right now, Katie is: living in NYC, working as a data scientist, and refusing to give to the Kenyon Fund until the College recognizes the Kenyon Student Worker Organizing Committee (K-SWOC) and their request to form a union of student workers. She encourages fellow alums to do the same and to make their support of K-SWOC known to the administration.
Laura Boniface
Laura has just moved to New York to begin work as a lawyer. If you see her walking too slowly, please be nice about it. She's been in the Midwest for a while.
Lauren Katz
Still loving Chicago! Just accepted a full-time job at Steppenwolf Theatre Company in their Education Department, and looking forward to theatre slowly figuring itself out again after this last year and a half.
Rachel Hall
I’m back in Los Angeles and just finished working on a huge global (virtual) fan event called TUDUM. Check it out here-www.YouTube.com/Netflix or Google “Netflix TUDUM”! Looking forward to resting for the next couple of weeks while I puppy sit for Gen Malkin ’14.
Paige (Shermis) Carr
Paige moved to Ypsilanti, Michigan with her husband Nick ahead of their October 23, 2021 wedding in Toledo, Ohio. She was lucky enough to reunite with Elizabeth Trout and Kate Kadleck for Paige’s bachelorette party in Northern Michigan over Labor Day weekend, Julia Weaver at her wedding shower, and all of the above and Sarah Bence at her wedding!
Sofia Mandel
Sofia will be living in Playa del Carmen, Mexico for the rest of 2021. She welcomes visitors!
