Our Path Forward: The Campaign for Kenyon

Kenyon Class of 2014 Fall Class Letter

Dear classmates,

Kenyon couldn’t be more Kenyon than it is in the fall. Are we right? We're talking cool breezes to balance out the afternoon sun, crunchy leaves blanketing everything in autumn colors and an endless supply of friendly faces to greet you along Middle Path. Whatever the season, we look forward to running into you on the Hill again soon, especially since we haven’t had a chance to reconnect there in some time.

And what a campus we’ll have to return to! Chalmers Library is open and beautiful. (Have you seen the disco ball-esque skylight feature?) All four classes are studying together again in Gambier. (With a bonus first-year cohort finishing a semester in Copenhagen!) And plans are taking shape for an unforgettable Reunion 2022 on the Hill. (Mark your calendar for the weekend of May 27. All alumni are invited to attend!)

In other exciting campus news, the College just shared it’s new strategic plan that will guide its planning and actions leading up to the bicentennial in 2024 and beyond. You will be pleased to see it includes core elements like developing a computer science program informed by the liberal arts; enrolling, retaining and graduating a student body that is representative of the talent and diversity of our nation and the world; implementing a holistic approach to health and wellness, with an emphasis on mental health; and expanding its commitment to environmental responsibility.

You have also likely heard the announcement of the Kenyon Access Initiative which will bring more high-achieving students to Kenyon thanks to a $25 million matching grant from the Schuler Education Foundation. Any amount we give through this Kenyon Access Initiative will be matched 1:1 and will go to a new scholarship for students from families with limited means and those ineligible for government aid — up to $25 million.

We could go on for pages about these two pieces of Kenyon news, but lucky for you, we don’t have to. Scroll on to learn more about Kenyon’s strategic plan and the Kenyon Access Initiative (and how they fit into our 2024 bicentennial celebration).

As you read about what’s in store for Kenyon’s future, we hope you’ll consider supporting today’s students with a gift to the Kenyon Fund and (if you have the ability) making an additional gift to the Kenyon Access Initiative that has the potential to bring 50 additional talented students to Kenyon each year.

Kenyon couldn’t be Kenyon without involved and supportive alumni like us. As the bicentennial draws closer, we challenge each of you to do a little more than you have in the past to help make Kenyon the special place it is. This could mean becoming an alumni volunteer, attending a College event, submitting a class note or setting up a recurring monthly gift.

Thank you!
Your 2014 CA’s

Making a gift

Gifts of all sizes add up: every year, gifts of $100 or less to the Kenyon Fund total more than $250,000. Also, every dollar given to the Kenyon Access Initiative between now and June 2026 will be matched and used to create permanent new scholarship funds to enroll exceptional students with limited resources and those who are ineligible for government aid. MAKE A GIFT

Class of 2014 Fall Notes

Molly McCleary - Molly started a new gig at CVS Health in Dec 2020 and has been helping organizations navigate safely returning to gathering in person, primarily through COVID testing. She's also in her last semester of her MBA at Boston University and looks forward to having "free time" again after graduation. Molly is lucky to get into shenanigans with local goons Olivia Sabik, Tracy Curtin, and Anna Yie and regional pals Maggie Higby Ericksen '12 and Meghan Henshall '12.

Emily Rose - I'm in my last year of internal medicine residency at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, VA! I'll be staying there next year as a chief resident and then plan to pursue a pulmonary and critical care fellowship. I also married my best friend in the mountains of Shenandoah National Park this past August!

Kelsey Kiser - Going into year two of blissful living with fellow Kenyon 2014 classmate, Lucy Phillips, in Prospect Heights, Brooklyn. Come visit!

Brandylyn Arredondo - Brandy finally graduated with her MA, an experience she never wants to live through again. She continues to work her part-time job as a qualitative researcher for cancer while she looks for an adult job. Over the summer, she took the opportunity to become a wilderness researcher and spent 7 weeks living in the Yosemite Wilderness. It was a much needed time of solitude after her MA experience.

Kristina Miklavic - Norway has finally opened, we have enough people vaccinated! I’m still working for the Norwegian Labour and Welfare organization and I’m still a union rep. We have negotiations for everyone’s salaries these days. I’m learning a lot and realized I am underpaid. Got to change that. On that note I encourage you all to have a conversation with your manager/boss about your salary! In other news, I finally finished my master’s in philosophy and I’ve been trying solo hiking/camping this fall! Absolutely love it, even though the sound of the tent in the wind makes me paranoid (still haven’t met a bear or a wolf, so all good so far!).

Allyson Taylor Matthews - Allyson is living in New Mexico with her husband, Jake ’13 and their ten month old twins, Charlotte and Soren. Allyson and the twins recently met up with Ally Bruschi and Becca Weiser in New York— just like old times, plus two!

McKinley Sherrod - McKinley Sherrod continues to live in her hometown of Chicago. She married David Litvak (Brandeis University ’11) in June, with Kenyon housemates Rebecca Ogus, Lizzie Thoreson-Green, and Margaret Tilson in attendance. McKinley works in healthcare design and innovation at the University of Illinois at Chicago, while David is an attorney with the Board of Veterans’ Appeals.

McKinley and David live in the South Loop with the sweetest pit bull you’ll ever meet and a very opinionated diabetic cat.

Aaron Lynn - Aaron is living in London for the foreseeable future. He has his favorite French cafe around the corner from his home that he goes to on weekends. And he really enjoys the many beautiful parks. Come say hello if you're ever in town!

Lizzie Thoreson-Green - I moved to Recife, Brazil to start my first Foreign Service assignment at the US Consulate in Recife.

David Hoyt - David is still working in Kenyon's communications office, but after five years managing social media (which is about five decades in Twitter time) he's now focusing on longer-form writing and public relations. Like so many others, he finally gave into his curiosity about grad school and is somewhat skeptically pursuing a part-time degree in arts administration at Ohio University. Visit him if ever you're in Columbus!

Brielle Giomini - Hello, fellow Kenyonites! I am living out my Southern California dream after just having completed my doctoral internship at California State University Fullerton. I am currently finishing my dissertation on intersectional feminism to finally get that doctorate degree this coming December! My beautiful fiancée and soul mate, Lindsay, and I are planning our wedding for October 2022 and could not be more excited to "tie the knot" and celebrate our next chapter! Sending well wishes to all :)

Jordi Alonso - After finishing his PhD in Victorian literature at the University of Missouri in the spring, Jordi recently moved to Manhattan to pursue an MA in Classical Studies at Columbia University, hopefully thereby returning full circle to the academic journey he started in the fall of 2010 in a classroom in the basement of Ascension Hall with his first Latin class. He'll be focusing on late antique Greco-Egyptian literature at Columbia—particularly on Nonnos and his use of nymphs and fauns in the epic Dionysiaca, which he is currently translating. He is also working on an as-of-yet untitled book of sonnets inspired by Orphic and prophetic traditions as they evolved around the Oracle of Delphi in the 6th and 5th centuries BCE.
