Kenyon Class of 2013 Fall Class Letter
| |
| Hey Class of 2013,
Kenyon is at its peak Kenyon-ness in the fall. You know what I mean – the riot of color on the trees arching over Middle Path, cool breezes and studying on Ransom Lawn, the energy and excitement for diving afresh into intellectual problems with the new semester. What memories capture the feeling of fall at Kenyon for you? I’d love to hear them!
Whatever the season, I look forward to running into you on the Hill again soon, especially since we haven’t had a chance to reconnect there in some time. And what a campus we’ll have to return to! Chalmers Library is open and beautiful. Have you seen the disco ball-esque skylight feature? All four classes are studying together again in Gambier –with a bonus first-year cohort finishing a semester in Copenhagen! And plans are taking shape for an unforgettable Reunion 2022 on the Hill. Mark your calendars for the weekend of May 27. All alumni are invited to attend!
In other exciting campus news, the College just shared a new strategic plan that will guide its planning and actions leading up to the bicentennial in 2024 and beyond. You’ll be pleased to see it includes core elements like developing a computer science program informed by the liberal arts; enrolling, retaining and graduating a student body that is representative of the talent and diversity of our nation and the world; implementing a holistic approach to health and wellness, with an emphasis on mental health; and expanding its commitment to environmental responsibility.
You have also likely heard the announcement of the Kenyon Access Initiative which will bring more high-achieving students to Kenyon thanks to a $25 million matching grant from the Schuler Education Foundation. Any amount we give through this Kenyon Access Initiative will be matched 1:1 and will go to a new scholarship for students from families with limited means and those ineligible for government aid — up to $25 million. Scroll on to learn more about Kenyon’s strategic plan and the Kenyon Access Initiative (and how they fit into our 2024 bicentennial celebration).
As you read about what’s in store for Kenyon’s future, I hope you’ll consider supporting today’s students with a gift to the Kenyon Fund and/or the new Kenyon Access Initiative, which has the potential to bring 50 additional talented and deserving students to Kenyon each year.
Kenyon couldn’t be Kenyon without involved and supportive alums like us. As the bicentennial draws closer, I challenge each of you to do a little more than you have in the past to help make Kenyon the special place it is. This could mean becoming an alumni volunteer, attending a College event, submitting a class note, or setting up a recurring gift.
Thank you! Meaghan Pachay

Making a gift
Gifts of all sizes add up: every year, gifts of $100 or less to the Kenyon Fund total more than $250,000. Also, every dollar given to the Kenyon Access Initiative between now and June 2026 will be matched and used to create permanent new scholarship funds to enroll exceptional students with limited resources and those who are ineligible for government aid. Spencer Carlson - Still in the middle of getting a doctorate in clinical psychology in the Bay Area. And was just married on August 21st 2021!
Jake Fishbein - I'm hard at work finishing the final draft of the novel I've been working on for 5.5 years (hopefully at reading this it's complete) and growing the men's coaching group I've been running since March 2020 - The Arena Men's Group: a space for men to trust themselves, live authentically and vulnerably, and step into the arena in their personal and professional lives.
Andrew Gipson - I graduated with a PhD from Cornell in August, and now I work for the USDA on plant proteins that help crops survive in poor soil conditions (e.g., heavy metals).
Colleen Damerell - Happy to share that I'm once again working full-time in abortion care...what a time for it! Support your local abortion fund and independent clinics if you can. Missing all the folks I haven't seen throughout the pandemic, but very happy to share that I became an aunt, bought an ice cream maker, and ran two half marathons during these unprecedented times.
Also, I support student workers who are organizing and I encourage the College to recognize K-SWOC!
Emma (Cummins) DeVanzo - The last two years have been a roller coaster. The last time I wrote a class note, my husband and I were expecting our first child. Our son Austin was stillborn during the early days of the pandemic which was a very emotional and isolating time. As I write this, it has been about 18 months since we lost Austin, and we are about a month away from welcoming our next child into the world. Writing has been so helpful to me throughout this entire journey, so I started blogging for the Pregnancy After Loss Support organization to help others who are going through similar experiences. While I hope no one ever has to go through the pain of losing a child, please know that I am here if any of you ever need support from someone who has been through something similar.
Libby Panhorst - I started a new job in early September. I'm now a senior associate on the strategy and disclosure team of a global sustainability consultancy, working out of Cleveland.
Daniel Harrison - Daughter just turned 1! She's a joy even though she calls me "Mama" for no apparent reason. Still living in Madison, WI, where I work at a healthcare IT company.
Curtis Ramsey - I was promoted to a new position in the FDIC and moved with my wife Marta Stewart-Bates '11 from Washington, DC to Chicago, IL. We moved into a 130-year-old Victorian, and our efforts to renovate the home have escalated into a second full-time job. We've enjoyed the challenge, but swear we're never going to financially recover from this. On the plus side, we now have a couple of updated guest bedrooms so hit us up if you're in the area!
Liliana Martinez - I relocated to London (in the middle of a pandemic, yes!) in February to take up a new role with my company covering the Europe region. It has been an interesting challenge to start a new life in a new city during a pandemic and lockdown, which was ongoing in England until May. My cat Odette came with me on this journey, and has been loving the bird-watching available to her out of the windows of my new apartment. On the side, I have been singing in a classical music choir and keeping my Arabic studies up to date, as well as running along the Thames whenever I get a chance. Aaron Lynn ’14 also recently moved to London, and we have been able to hang out a few times since he got here. Please look me up if you are ever in London!
Tess Waggoner - I moved to NYC at the end of the summer and have started a masters program at the Kevorkian Center for Near Eastern Studies at NYU.
Gregory Stark - Moved with my cat to Belgium in September to start a research masters in theology and literature at KU Leuven.
