Kenyon Class of 2011 Fall Class Letter
| |
| Dear classmates,
Kenyon couldn’t be more Kenyon than it is in the fall: cool breezes to balance out the afternoon sun, crunchy leaves blanketing everything in autumn colors and an endless supply of friendly faces to greet you along Middle Path. Whatever the season, I look forward to running into you on the Hill again soon, especially since we haven’t had a chance to reconnect there in some time.
And what a campus we’ll have to return to! Chalmers Library is open and beautiful. (Have you seen the disco ball-esque skylight feature?) All four classes are studying together again in Gambier. (With a bonus first-year cohort finishing a semester in Copenhagen!) And plans are taking shape for an unforgettable Reunion 2022 on the Hill. (Mark your calendar for the weekend of May 27. All alumni are invited to attend!)
In other exciting campus news, the College just shared its new strategic plan that will guide its planning and actions leading up to the bicentennial in 2024 and beyond. You will be pleased to see it includes core elements like developing a computer science program informed by the liberal arts; enrolling, retaining and graduating a student body that is representative of the talent and diversity of our nation and the world; implementing a holistic approach to health and wellness, with an emphasis on mental health; and expanding its commitment to environmental responsibility.
You have also likely heard the announcement of the Kenyon Access Initiative which will bring more high-achieving students to Kenyon thanks to a $25 million matching grant from the Schuler Education Foundation. Any amount we give through this Kenyon Access Initiative will be matched 1:1 and will go to a new scholarship for students from families with limited means and those ineligible for government aid — up to $25 million.
I could go on for pages about these two pieces of Kenyon news, but lucky for you, I don’t have to. Scroll on to learn more about Kenyon’s strategic plan and the Kenyon Access Initiative (and how they fit into our 2024 bicentennial celebration).
As you read about what’s in store for Kenyon’s future, I hope you’ll consider supporting today’s students with a gift to the Kenyon Fund and (if you have the ability) making an additional gift to the Kenyon Access Initiative that has the potential to bring 50 additional talented students to Kenyon each year. Last year, our class won the Class of ’62 award and the Class of ’21 plate, as we were the young alumni class and the reunion class with the greatest percentage of members who contributed to Kenyon. Let’s show strong support again this year!
Kenyon couldn’t be Kenyon without involved and supportive alumni like us. Our class committee appreciated those who headlined and contributed to our virtual events last year. Trivia and our concert and conversation were highlights of my winter and it was so fun to reconnect virtually with so many of you. As the bicentennial draws closer, I challenge each of you to do a little more than you have in the past to help make Kenyon the special place it is. This could mean becoming an alumni volunteer, attending a College event, submitting a class note or setting up a recurring monthly gift. All contributions of time, talent, and support help Kenyon forge ahead towards a strong future.
Thank you! Victoria Lederer
P.S. Enjoy the 2011 class notes found below!

Making a gift
Gifts of all sizes add up: every year, gifts of $100 or less to the Kenyon Fund total more than $250,000. Also, every dollar given to the Kenyon Access Initiative between now and June 2026 will be matched and used to create permanent new scholarship funds to enroll exceptional students with limited resources and those who are ineligible for government aid. Elana Carlson: It's been a crazy summer! I founded FANTZYE Bagels & Suppers on Martha's Vineyard. We make sourdough bagels and do private cooking and pop-ups! Follow along @fantzyebagels.
Sasha Fanny-Holston: Greetings from Kenyon! I returned to the Hill in August as the Assistant Director of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion and so far it's been going really well. I oversee Snowden, KEEP, and REACH, along with other ODEI-related activities. After dealing with a lot of loss and disillusionment this year, I realized that life is too short to be miserable and in a miserable job, so I left Big Law and Boston behind and am settling into life in Columbus. I miss certain things about life in Boston, but I do not miss the cost of living, real-time commuting nightmares of idling on the Tobin Bridge or being squished on the subway. Always happy to connect with anyone if you're ever in my neck of the woods. Stay masked, vaccinated, hydrated, moisturized, and don't forget to prioritize your mental health.
Hannah Grisham: It is my honor and privilege to announce that my mama’s dream of having a nice Jewish doctor in the family has come true! This summer, I graduated from Michigan State with my Ph.D. in Curriculum, Instruction, and Teacher Education. Still figuring out next steps, but could not be happier that this stage is over! Long time reader, first time writer. Always a joy to hear from ya’ll!
Mary Margaret (Fletcher) Groberg: Dan and I welcomed our second daughter, Anna Ruth Groberg, on July 1st. Big sister Molly is smitten (as are we). We enjoyed fall visits from classmates Ashley Gray and Anna Childs. Also, I recently discovered a purple nail polish color called “Lords & Ladies.” I can only assume a Kenyon grad is behind it and would love to know the story!
Evan Hall: I'm standing in solidarity with the current students' effort to unionize their workforce to better protect against exploitation. Recognize KSWOC!
Ted Herod: After a decade of film, video, and advertising work, I have determined that advertising is no longer the most despised profession, and therefore, I will graduate with my J.D. in 2022 from Seton Hall Law and begin work as a lawyer in New York. In the meantime, I’ve had the great fortune of crossing paths with Ian “Laguna” Jacobs on multiple occasions, most recently in the New Hope, PA wilderness. He’s not on the beach, but he’s out there.
Rebecca Katz: I moved to California! I am working for the public health department in their covid surveillance team, and my fiancé is getting his PhD at Davis. Currently working out all the best bike loops in town.
Victoria Lederer: I had a wonderful summer of gravel bike adventures and completing my first full Ironman in Lake Placid. I'm looking forward to lots of hiking and biking while fall colors are at their peak in the Adirondacks. Stay well all; it’s always great to see these updates!
Emily (Smith) Martin: This summer I switched employers and now work for Akron Children's Hospital in their primary care office in Wooster in my 6th year as a nurse practitioner. Thankfully with vaccines (yay!) this summer was filled with lots of Kenyon faces. We celebrated Kat Powers’ wedding, hosted Sam Reichenbach, and got to see Kelly (Schorling) Silvestri for a quick visit. In more exciting news, we welcomed our 3rd son in August- Brooks William!
Laura Miller, Ph.D: I’m in my second year working as a school psychologist after getting my doctorate from Ohio State in May 2020. Kyle Whitman ’10 and I had our baby girl, Kirby Whitman-Miller in May 2021, and we are loving our parenting journey so far! This coming spring, I’m hoping to celebrate five years cancer free :)
Sarah Queller: I married Joseph Soza on July 4 in Indianapolis, on the grounds of the art museum where we had our first date and became engaged a year later. We met in our clinical psychology doctoral program. We were delighted that a handful of close Kenyon pals traveled from across the country to share in our celebration! We are currently applying for their predoctoral internships -- the final step before (finally) being conferred as doctors! I’m keeping my maiden name professionally, but adopting my married name for personal matters.
Jared (Ruark) Ruari: My spouse Allison and I have been living in Nashville for about 3 years. Our son Silas turns two in November and he will get a baby brother in December. I'm mostly dad but occasionally do some church work, too.
Marta Stewart-Bates: Curtis Ramsey '13 and I moved to Oak Park, Illinois from Washington DC in April. We bought our first house, an 1895 Victorian. We also welcomed a second dog, Stevie, into our family.
Bryn Stole: Just got back to Baltimore (where I've been working at the local newspaper, The Baltimore Sun, since January) after a two-month journalism fellowship in Berlin. Finally got to put that German major to some professional use. It was a hoot getting to catch up with Claire Chapman and Doug Wieand there (and visiting Maia Stone '10 in Dresden).
Margaret Wardrop: Come glamp with me near Zion National Park! I can teach you how to handle rattlesnakes and tarantulas with poise and grace.
