Kenyon Class of 2010 Fall Class Letter
| |
| Dear classmates,
Kenyon couldn’t be more Kenyon than it is in the fall. Am I right? I’m talking cool breezes to balance out the afternoon sun, crunchy leaves blanketing everything in autumn colors and an endless supply of friendly faces to greet you along Middle Path. Whatever the season, I look forward to running into you on the Hill again soon, especially since we haven’t had a chance to reconnect there in some time.
And what a campus we’ll have to return to! Chalmers Library is open and beautiful. (Have you seen the disco ball-esque skylight feature?) All four classes are studying together again in Gambier. (With a bonus first-year cohort finishing a semester in Copenhagen!) And plans are taking shape for an unforgettable Reunion 2022 on the Hill. (Mark your calendar for the weekend of May 27. All alumni are invited to attend!)
In other exciting campus news, the College just shared its new strategic plan that will guide its planning and actions leading up to the bicentennial in 2024 and beyond. You will be pleased to see it includes core elements like developing a computer science program informed by the liberal arts; enrolling, retaining and graduating a student body that is representative of the talent and diversity of our nation and the world; implementing a holistic approach to health and wellness, with an emphasis on mental health; and expanding its commitment to environmental responsibility.
You have also likely heard the announcement of the Kenyon Access Initiative which will bring more high-achieving students to Kenyon thanks to a $25 million matching grant from the Schuler Education Foundation. Any amount we give through this Kenyon Access Initiative will be matched 1:1 and will go to a new scholarship for students from families with limited means and those ineligible for government aid — up to $25 million.
I could go on for pages about these two pieces of Kenyon news, but lucky for you, I don’t have to. Scroll on to learn more about Kenyon’s strategic plan and the Kenyon Access Initiative (and how they fit into our 2024 bicentennial celebration).
As you read about what’s in store for Kenyon’s future, I hope you’ll consider supporting today’s students with a gift to the Kenyon Fund and (if you have the ability) making an additional gift to the Kenyon Access Initiative that has the potential to bring 50 additional talented students to Kenyon each year.
Kenyon couldn’t be Kenyon without involved and supportive alumni like us. As the bicentennial draws closer, I challenge each of you to do a little more than you have in the past to help make Kenyon the special place it is. This could mean becoming an alumni volunteer, attending a College event, submitting a class note or setting up a recurring monthly gift.
Thank you! Michelle von Hirschberg
P.S. Enjoy our 2010 class notes below!

Making a gift
Gifts of all sizes add up: every year, gifts of $100 or less to the Kenyon Fund total more than $250,000. Christopher Brophy: Lizzie and Chris are living in Fairfax, VA with their 2 kids Gene and Matilda who both started school this year.
Logan Donaldson, DVM, DACVIM (Neurology): I am very humbled to have passed my Veterinary Neurology/Neurosurgery boards and am now a Veterinary Neurologist. This has happily relocated my wife (Hannah) and I to Omaha, Nebraska. Omaha is an absolute jewel of a city and we would welcome anyone who happens to be visiting the area.
Khalid Eldahan: I moved from Ann Arbor, MI to Houston, TX last fall for work. If anyone is passing through Houston let me know! I've seen a few other cars around the city with Kenyon stickers but haven't identified them yet, it's a nice reminder of the "Kenyon mystique".
Arjav Ezekiel: My wife Tracy (the chef) and I opened up a little neighborhood restaurant and wine bar in East Austin, Texas called Birdie's. We hope to see all of you here soon!
Saskia (Warren) Leeds: I'm celebrating two years with the African Wildlife Foundation! It's been one of the few things giving me hope, along with my wonderful partner and friends. Marcie Schwartz '13 was one of the first people I saw in person after getting vaccinated!
Elizabeth “Liz” (Anderson) Maloney: Liz Maloney continues to live in the DC area. In March, she began to serve as the alternate on Rise: A Feminist Book Project for Ages 0-18, which is part of the Feminist Task Force of the Social Responsibilities Table of the American Library Association. The end of August brought a career change for Liz. After seven years working as a Children's Librarian at D.C. Public Library, she accepted a position as a Librarian at the National Institutes of Patient Library. The Patient Library is akin to a small public library, but in a hospital setting. She continues to enjoy being a purple haired cat lady and wife to Seth Maloney.
Kyra Mirante: I have spent the last near decade in New Orleans. Just four months before the pandemic hit, I opened a Pilates and Bodywork studio with a dear friend. Now, my partner's graduate studies in Environmental Management have brought us to beautiful Durham, NC. For now, I'm working as an independent contractor while I refine my manual therapy strategies and deepen my understanding of the subtle body. In my loads of my friendless free time, I keep myself stimulated with my endless search for the perfect vegan cake recipe.
Jacob Shanley: Received my M.S. in Applied Mathematics from UNM in 2019, started a software business last April, and had a baby boy in May. I still swim regularly.
Andy Statler: Whatttupp, Lords and Ladies?!?! I'm still in D.C. and recently started teaching Math at E.L. Haynes Public Charter High School. My band (in which I play keys) - the Blue Dot Jazz Troupe - is still performing regularly in the area. Check out the schedule on our website if you're in town and want to come out - www.bluedotjazztroupe.com.
Daniel Streicher: Last month I biked the Ohio to Erie Trail from Cincinnati to Cleveland, visiting Kenyon friends along the way. I stayed with Pratima Shanbhag and Derek Barbato ’13 in Cincinnati and met their son Aden, spent a day in Gambier with Ellie Hansen, Peter Certo, and their kid Finn (we all ate at the VI, half of us climbed the upside down tree), and walked campus with Professor Baumann. Ohio is beautiful and very bike friendly and it was great to be back.
Sam Turner: On October 1st I accepted the position as the new Assistant Director of Academic Ceremonies and Events at Kenyon! While I have loved the last four years in the international office, I am really excited to get back to large scale event management. And the ability to do it here on the Hill makes it that much more joyous!
Michelle von Hirschberg: Happy fall everyone! This summer, we were finally able to take a few trips - our first since the beginning of the pandemic - to the Hocking Hills in Ohio and Sunset Beach, NC. It was so refreshing to get away, disconnect, and reunite with family after 18 months of isolation. Our daughter, Ellie, just turned two in August, and watching her experience new places for the first time was truly magical. This will be my 11th year at Jacobs, currently working as a Sales Operations Manager for the Life Sciences business. It makes me proud that my team has worked on several projects to support manufacturing of the COVID-19 vaccine!
Natalie West: Hello! In September my job with the World Food Programme brought me to Madagascar, where I'm continuing to work on nutrition analyses and projects to prevent malnutrition. It's a big change from West Africa, and outside of work I'm looking forward to doing some hiking, spotting some lemurs, and learning to speak some Malagasy!
