Kenyon Class of 2008 Fall Class Letter
| |
| Dear classmates,
Kenyon couldn’t be more Kenyon than it is in the fall. Cool breezes to balance out the afternoon sun, crunchy leaves blanketing everything in autumn colors and an endless supply of friendly faces (some new and some old) to greet you along Middle Path. Whatever the season, I look forward to running into you on the Hill again soon, especially since we haven’t had a chance to reconnect there in some time.
And what a campus we’ll have to return to! Chalmers Library is open and beautiful. (Have you seen the disco ball-esque skylight feature?) All four classes are thankfully studying together again in Gambier. With a bonus first-year cohort finishing a semester in Copenhagen - where was that when we were there?!? And plans are taking shape for an unforgettable Reunion 2022 on the Hill. (Mark your calendar for the weekend of May 27. All alumni are invited to attend!)
In other exciting campus news, the College just shared its new strategic plan that will guide its planning and actions leading up to the bicentennial in 2024 and beyond. You will be pleased to see it includes core elements like developing a computer science program informed by the liberal arts; enrolling, retaining and graduating a student body that is representative of the talent and diversity of our nation and the world; implementing a holistic approach to health and wellness, with an emphasis on mental health; and expanding its commitment to environmental responsibility.
You have also likely heard the announcement of the Kenyon Access Initiative which will bring more high-achieving students to Kenyon thanks to a $25 million matching grant from the Schuler Education Foundation. Any amount we give through this Kenyon Access Initiative will be matched 1:1 and will go to a new scholarship for students from families with limited means and those ineligible for government aid — up to $25 million.
I could go on for pages about these two pieces of Kenyon news, but lucky for you, I don’t have to. Scroll on to learn more about Kenyon’s strategic plan and the Kenyon Access Initiative (and how they fit into our 2024 bicentennial celebration).
As you read about what’s in store for Kenyon’s future, I hope you’ll consider supporting today’s students with a gift to the Kenyon Fund and (if you have the ability) making an additional gift to the Kenyon Access Initiative that has the potential to bring 50 additional talented students to Kenyon each year.
Kenyon couldn’t be Kenyon without involved and supportive alumni like us. As the bicentennial draws closer, I challenge each of you to do a little more than you have in the past to help make Kenyon the special place it is. This could mean becoming an alumni volunteer, attending a College event, submitting a class note or setting up a recurring monthly gift.
Thank you! Neil Johnston

Making a gift
Gifts of all sizes add up: every year, gifts of $100 or less to the Kenyon Fund total more than $250,000. Also, every dollar given to the Kenyon Access Initiative between now and June 2026 will be matched and used to create permanent new scholarship funds to enroll exceptional students with limited resources and those who are ineligible for government aid. Elaine Driscoll - My husband and I welcomed our daughter Maisie to the family this February. She has already been lucky enough to meet my former Kenyon roommates, Anna Anderson, Julia Wessel and Eliza Huberth!
Jessica Gersh Leff - I’m living in Los Angeles with my 2-year-old daughter and husband. I’ve continued my work in education.
Isaac Miller - It’s been a long time since I’ve submitted a class note, so there’s a lot to catch up on. Here goes: in 2019 I moved to Lawton, OK, where I became an English teacher at Lawton High School and got married to Dr. Emily Finney-Miller. Since the Covid pandemic hit, I’ve been teaching virtually. Meanwhile, my wife and I became foster parents and have had two placements who have affected and changed our lives in many ways. We have watched The Office through a countless number of times, and are looking forward to going on a cruise this Christmas. I still dream of the Kokosing.
Rachel Kauppila - Despite the pandemic, Rachel's had a great 12 months. In December 2020 she graduated from George Washington University with a degree in Clinical Rehabilitation Counseling, and is now a Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor for the State of Vermont. She helps adults with disabilities with employment, education, and training. In June 2021 she and her husband, Phil, welcomed Connell Kauppila Ortego to the world! They get a lot of questions about the name - no, it's not a family name, it just happened to be a name they found and liked and it was the only boy's name they could agree on. Rachel actually discovered the name in Sally Rooney's book, Normal People, but it's much too sexy of a book (or Hulu show) to share that information widely!! So far only a few people have made the connection, thankfully.
Sean Ryan - My wife, Griffin Phillips Ryan, and I are expecting our first child, a daughter, in February 2022 (Kenyon class of 2044 maybe?)
Mark “Mooncow” Muenchau - My wife and I still live in Denver, along with our two girls, and we work alongside our communities in before and after school programming or training new teachers.
Ann Shikany - After three years at the Natural Resources Defense Council I'm leaving to return to federal service in the Biden administration. I'm re-joining the U.S. Department of Transportation as Counselor to the Deputy Secretary. Thanks to all my friends from Kenyon like Emma Britz, Sara Hunkler and Nida Chaudhary who helped keep my spirits up during the long interview and hiring process!
Rachel (Berkshire) Kibbee - Rachel and Andrew Kibbee are excited to announce the birth of their second child, Lorna Mae Kibbee on May 27, 2021. Her older brother Guy, age 2, is loving his new role as a big brother! The family bought their first house and moved to New Rochelle, NY in October 2020.
Shea Davis - Shea had a busy spring! She and her husband Dann welcomed their second child, Ada Ruth Christian in March, a day after they went into contract on their new home in the Worthington area of Columbus. After more than a year of Zoom hang outs, she loved having a chance to catch up (in person) with so many Kenyon friends in July!
Neil Johnston - My wife recently got a job at Temple University and we recently moved back to the Philadelphia area. We're excited to be closer to our families and connect with all the Kenyon alums in the area!
Cait Watkins - Cait Watkins got her children's book, The Sneeze Thief, published.
