Our Path Forward: The Campaign for Kenyon

Kenyon Class of 2009 Fall Class Letter

Dear classmates,

Kenyon couldn’t be more Kenyon than it is in the fall. Am I right? I’m talking cool breezes to balance out the afternoon sun, crunchy leaves blanketing everything in autumn colors and an endless supply of friendly faces to greet you along Middle Path. Whatever the season, I look forward to running into you on the Hill again soon, especially since we haven’t had a chance to reconnect there in some time.

And what a campus we’ll have to return to! Chalmers Library is open and beautiful. (Have you seen the disco ball-esque skylight feature?) All four classes are studying together again in Gambier. (With a bonus first-year cohort finishing a semester in Copenhagen!) And plans are taking shape for an unforgettable Reunion 2022 on the Hill. (Mark your calendar for the weekend of May 27. All alumni are invited to attend!)

In other exciting campus news, the College just shared its new strategic plan that will guide its planning and actions leading up to the bicentennial in 2024 and beyond. You will be pleased to see it includes core elements like developing a computer science program informed by the liberal arts; enrolling, retaining and graduating a student body that is representative of the talent and diversity of our nation and the world; implementing a holistic approach to health and wellness, with an emphasis on mental health; and expanding its commitment to environmental responsibility.

You have also likely heard the announcement of the Kenyon Access Initiative which will bring more high-achieving students to Kenyon thanks to a $25 million matching grant from the Schuler Education Foundation. Any amount we give through this Kenyon Access Initiative will be matched 1:1 and will go to a new scholarship for students from families with limited means and those ineligible for government aid — up to $25 million.

I could go on for pages about these two pieces of Kenyon news, but lucky for you, I don’t have to. Scroll on to learn more about Kenyon’s strategic plan and the Kenyon Access Initiative (and how they fit into our 2024 bicentennial celebration).

As you read about what’s in store for Kenyon’s future, I hope you’ll consider supporting today’s students with a gift to the Kenyon Fund and (if you have the ability) making an additional gift to the Kenyon Access Initiative that has the potential to bring 50 additional talented students to Kenyon each year.

Kenyon couldn’t be Kenyon without involved and supportive alumni like us. As the bicentennial draws closer, I challenge each of you to do a little more than you have in the past to help make Kenyon the special place it is. This could mean becoming an alumni volunteer, attending a College event, submitting a class note or setting up a recurring monthly gift.

Thank you!
Hunter Judson, Jr.

P.S. Enjoy our 2009 class notes below!

There's a lot happening at Kenyon today.

We want you to be a part of it.

Making a gift

Gifts of all sizes add up: every year, gifts of $100 or less to the Kenyon Fund total more than $250,000. Also, every dollar given to the Kenyon Access Initiative between now and June 2026 will be matched and used to create permanent new scholarship funds to enroll exceptional students with limited resources and those who are ineligible for government aid. MAKE A GIFT

Class of 2009 Fall Notes

Julie (Buckner) Baron: Julie has kept busy! Julie is enjoying life with her two little girls, two dogs, and country house in the metro Boston area. She’s a Senior Director of Product and Data Science, getting her MBA part-time, while trying to juggle work and life. Always trying to stay busy, since boredom has always gotten her into trouble! She would love to hear from all of you, and hopes everyone is well!

Mark Boyd: I married a famous Croatian architect named Marina Curać who I met in Asheville, NC. During the pandemic we decided to move to Croatia to live with her family on the island of Korčula, where I now work in tourism.

Megan Connolly: After spending nearly 10 years in the field of social work, Megan has decided to pursue a Master of Fine Arts in Creative Non-fiction. She enrolled in Queens University of Charlotte's low-residency MFA earlier this year and is currently working on a memoir in essays.

Jay Galbraith: My wife and I are living in Boston; last year we welcomed our second daughter to our family. Right now, I manage the STEM programming for a network of charter schools and am pursuing my doctorate in education. Missing all you Kenyon folks!

Hunter Judson: After having our second child, Harper, in late 2019, we welcomed a third, Walter, in June 2021. Hopefully a couple of Lords and a Lady down the road! I'm looking forward to master-minding a bachelor party this winter for Jesse Boomsma-Gold '11, too!

Daisy Linden: Daisy has spent the last year as Director of Employee Experience at Coinbase, stewarding the company's transition to embracing a remote-first approach to work. Over the last year, she also had two weddings (to the same man): the first a micro "pandemic" wedding in the redwood grove of Golden Gate Park in San Francisco, and more recently, an outdoor occasion at her parents' home in Oakland, attended by many of her class of '08 and '09 alum friends.

Maika Lindsay: After a handful of years at Google, I made the decision to move back into the creative world and just started my new role as Senior Creative Producer of the Blue Sky Studio (new project development) at Meow Wolf in Santa Fe, New Mexico. I'm excited about this new chapter and even bought a cute little adobe home here in Santa Fe - come visit!

Linda Pear: Dan Takacs and Linda Pear welcomed twin boys into the world! Peter and Ira are super cute and very loved by their big sister Greta.

Lovey (Walker) Peissig: I was recently promoted to Manager of Consulting Services within the Leadership & Talent Development team at the University of Minnesota. My family and I also just relocated out of St. Paul to a more rural setting in St. Francis, MN.

Paige Markham: I moved back home to my hometown of Kailua, HI in order to manage my Hawai'i practice full-time. Aside from being a clinician as a doctor of acupuncture and Chinese medicine, I am currently teaching health-justice liberation workshops to my colleagues, East Asian Medicine Institutions and corporations. I still have my traditional Chinese facial tool line, Yang Face, as well.

Jenny (Howard) McKee: I am very happy to share that I finally finished my PhD on the foraging ecology of Nazca boobies (a seabird) in the Galapagos Islands at Wake Forest University! I also recently married the love-of-my-life, Dr. Zachary McKee, in a small family wedding on top of a mountain in North Carolina. We are very excited for this next great adventure!

Catherine Norbeck: Catherine and her husband Kacey welcomed their first baby, daughter Deka, to the world on June 15. Catherine leads Learning & Development at Zymergen, and together with Kacey owns a full-service automotive repair shop. They still live in their tiny house in the CA Bay Area, going on five years!

Caleb Ruopp: This year has been a big year of change. My son Graham turned one on 9/21/21, I started a new job as an ESOL teacher (English Speakers of Other Languages), and my wife and I are moving to Concord, NH to be closer to our jobs. Staying reasonably healthy and upbeat, as I hope all of you are as well.

Lee Stewart: Lee Stewart earned his MA in U.S. History from George Mason University and started teaching 9th and 11th grade English Language Arts at Park View High School in Loudoun County, VA.

Michael Vanacore: This past April, Michael and his wife Rosa welcomed their baby boy, Manuel Gustavo Saavedra Vanacore (Manu for short) into this world. They recently relocated from New York City back to the DC area, where Michael now serves as the Designated Pastor of Pilgrim Church, United Church of Christ in Wheaton, MD, and Rosa works as a litigation attorney for the Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund (MALDEF) in DC.

Anna Williams: Anna is excited to announce that she and her partner Jason recently have become homeowners! While their law practice keeps them busy, they did get a chance to sneak away and visit with alumna Grace Lee in Atlanta this past summer.
