Our Path Forward: The Campaign for Kenyon

Kenyon Class of 2005 Fall Class Letter

Dear classmates,

Kenyon couldn’t be more Kenyon than it is in the fall. Am I right? I’m talking cool breezes to balance out the afternoon sun, crunchy leaves blanketing everything in autumn colors and an endless supply of friendly faces to greet you along Middle Path. Whatever the season, I look forward to running into you on the Hill again soon, especially since we haven’t had a chance to reconnect there in some time.

And what a campus we’ll have to return to! Chalmers Library is open and beautiful. (Have you seen the disco ball-esque skylight feature?) All four classes are studying together again in Gambier. (With a bonus first-year cohort finishing a semester in Copenhagen!) And plans are taking shape for an unforgettable Reunion 2022 on the Hill. (Mark your calendar for the weekend of May 27. All alumni are invited to attend!)

In other exciting campus news, the College just shared its new strategic plan that will guide its planning and actions leading up to the bicentennial in 2024 and beyond. You will be pleased to see it includes core elements like developing a computer science program informed by the liberal arts; enrolling, retaining and graduating a student body that is representative of the talent and diversity of our nation and the world; implementing a holistic approach to health and wellness, with an emphasis on mental health; and expanding its commitment to environmental responsibility.

You have also likely heard the announcement of the Kenyon Access Initiative which will bring more high-achieving students to Kenyon thanks to a $25 million matching grant from the Schuler Education Foundation. Any amount we give through this Kenyon Access Initiative will be matched 1:1 and will go to a new scholarship for students from families with limited means and those ineligible for government aid — up to $25 million.

I could go on for pages about these two pieces of Kenyon news, but lucky for you, I don’t have to. Scroll on to learn more about Kenyon’s strategic plan and the Kenyon Access Initiative (and how they fit into our 2024 bicentennial celebration).

As you read about what’s in store for Kenyon’s future, I hope you’ll consider supporting today’s students with a gift to the Kenyon Fund and (if you have the ability) making an additional gift to the Kenyon Access Initiative that has the potential to bring 50 additional talented students to Kenyon each year.

Kenyon couldn’t be Kenyon without involved and supportive alumni like us. As the bicentennial draws closer, I challenge each of you to do a little more than you have in the past to help make Kenyon the special place it is. This could mean becoming an alumni volunteer, attending a College event, submitting a class note or setting up a recurring monthly gift.

Thank you!
Megan Harvey

Making a gift

Gifts of all sizes add up: every year, gifts of $100 or less to the Kenyon Fund total more than $250,000. Also, every dollar given to the Kenyon Access Initiative between now and June 2026 will be matched and used to create permanent new scholarship funds to enroll exceptional students with limited resources and those who are ineligible for government aid. MAKE A GIFT

Class of 2005 Fall Notes

Amanda (Carpenter) Aita: Busy autumn over here as my husband and I have 4 kiddos ages 2, 4, 10, and 14 now! I'm living out my dream of being around children and actively immersed in creativity, art, and teaching as I homeschool them. As now-virtual Bible study instructors too, our volunteer ministry work is keeping us all sane, safe, and other-centered in these crazy times! Sending allstu/allemp love! <3

Brian Cannon: My wife Katie '04 and I have moved back to Gambier. We bought a small farm a few miles from Kenyon, and are busy fixing it up. We're really excited to be back!

Erin Carr: Hello! My wife, Suzanne, and I were lucky enough to become moms in 2021. Our son, Zander, is so fun to have around and he and our dog are getting along very well. I changed accounting positions from The NoMad Hotel to a small woman-owned business called U.S. Chemicals. We recently moved from South Norwalk to Ridgefield, CT and we're enjoying the quiet.

Ellen (Fulco) Cosier: Ellen has had a busy summer and fall with her husband Perry and daughter Cecilia. Both Ellen and Cecilia went back to school with Cecilia starting preschool and Ellen continuing her degree in educational leadership at the University of Virginia.

Bethany (Anderson) Johns: On June 7, we welcomed our third son, Atlas Rae Johns. I also thoroughly enjoyed participating in a Physics career panel in September with my fellow classmates Lindsey Bleem and Megan Harvey.

Beth Kozlowski: 2020 and 2021 have been about as full as years could be. I currently work in healthcare administration for a large hospital in central Ohio and spend much of my time developing support programs for local healthcare providers. My husband Gabriel and I were married in the backyard in April of 2020 and spent most of quarantine navigating work from home, online kindergarten/2nd grade and settling into our new home where we recently welcomed our newest family member (daughter Penelope) in August of this year. Our dog Spencer is nervous for our upcoming return to the office.

Caitlin (Looney) Landesberg: My husband and two kids (3 & 5) and I moved to Mill Valley north of San Francisco. I’m currently focused on supporting mission-driven founders as an advisor and angel investor. Picked up my tennis racquet again too!

Nancy (Cass) Moss: My husband Colby and I welcomed our daughter, Quinn Margaret Moss, to our family in May. She is smiley and very strong-willed. Quinn's brother Emerson, 3, enjoys "gently" getting her up from her naps by barging into her room, using his stool to turn her light on, and announcing, "WAKE UP, QUINNIE!" while trying to stuff her pacifier back into her mouth. Quinn takes her revenge by trying to eat the face of his baby doll, Isabel, while using her core strength to inch closer to his Magna-Tiles castles. I am still providing teletherapy in my private practice from our basement part-time while the kids are in school and spending two days a week wrangling them at home. The excitement of the week was Emerson pointing to Ohio on his new US placemat and announcing, "this is where Mama went to school."

Maggie (Hill) Noojin: I am currently living in Chevy Chase, MD with my husband, Brad ’04 and our two daughters, Hunter (7) and Georgia (5). I am working as a psychotherapist in private practice where I see adolescents and adults with a specialty in perinatal mental health while Brad is working as an attorney in DC (how very unoriginal). We miss Kenyon and are hoping to bring our girls for a visit to The Hill soon!

Liz Palmer O’Dore: Big life shifts was the theme for 2021 - we moved from Seattle to Philly to be closer to family as we welcomed twin girls to our family in June. Our family of 5 (Margaret (2), Josephine and Susannah) love seeing grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins on a weekly basis. Living that suburbs/minivan life now!

Jonathan Pratt: I am living in downtown San Diego, CA and I recently began working on publishing a blog and newsletter for Dr. Senyo Adjibolosoo, Professor, IIHFD Founder and President of International Institute for Human Factor Development. You can learn more about us at our website www.iihfd.org. This organization raises funds for the Human Factor Leadership Academy in Ghana.

Erin (Louria) Zivic: I so enjoy reading all the alumni updates and hope everyone is well. I recently heard from Meg Scuderi and got such a kick talking with her about our college experiences from 16 years (!) ago. Time continues to fly by. I'm busy with maintaining my solo practice, enjoying my spouse, and watching my kids as they grow and change. They're in their first year of soccer and there's nothing as funny as seeing my five year old tower above the other kids, but refuse to run or kick the ball as the rest of the players scramble across the field. My daughter is doing great in her 2nd grade Spanish immersion class and I can't help but think of study abroad experiences when she goes to college. If any Kenyon alum are in the Santa Barbara, CA area, please look me up. Best of luck/spirits in these crazy times! – ez
