Our Path Forward: The Campaign for Kenyon

Kenyon Class of 2004 Fall Class Letter

Dear classmates,

Kenyon couldn’t be more exciting than it is in the fall. Am I right? I’m talking cool breezes to balance out the afternoon sun, crunchy leaves blanketing everything in autumn colors and an endless supply of friendly faces to greet you along Middle Path. Whatever the season, I look forward to running into you in person again soon, especially since we haven’t had a chance to reconnect in some time.

If you get a chance to visit campus you will find a number of exciting updates. Chalmers Library is open and beautiful. (Have you seen the disco ball-esque skylight feature?) All four classes are studying together again in Gambier. (With a bonus first-year cohort finishing a semester in Copenhagen!) And plans are taking shape for an unforgettable Reunion 2022 on the Hill. (Mark your calendar for the weekend of May 27. All alumni are invited to attend!)

In other exciting campus news, the College just shared a new strategic plan that will guide its planning and actions leading up to the bicentennial in 2024 and beyond. You will be pleased to see it includes core elements like developing a computer science program informed by the liberal arts; enrolling, retaining and graduating a student body that is representative of the talent and diversity of our nation and the world; implementing a holistic approach to health and wellness, with an emphasis on mental health; and expanding its commitment to environmental responsibility.

You have also likely heard the announcement of the Kenyon Access Initiative which will bring more high-achieving students to Kenyon thanks to a $25 million matching grant from the Schuler Education Foundation. If you get a chance I highly recommend you watch this short video narrated by Melzetta Moody ’05 (www.youtube.com/watch?v=VrV8ckJUTks).  Any amount we give through this Kenyon Access Initiative will be matched 1:1 and will go to a new scholarship for students from families with limited means and those ineligible for government aid — up to $25 million.

I could go on for pages about these two pieces of Kenyon news, but lucky for you (and me), I don’t have to. Scroll on to learn more about Kenyon’s strategic plan and the Kenyon Access Initiative (and how they fit into our 2024 bicentennial celebration).

As you read about what’s in store for Kenyon’s future, I hope you’ll consider supporting today’s students with a gift to the Kenyon Fund and (if you have the ability) making an additional gift to the Kenyon Access Initiative that has the potential to bring 50 additional talented students to Kenyon each year.

Kenyon couldn’t be Kenyon without involved and supportive alumni like us. As the bicentennial draws closer, I challenge each of you to do a little more than you have in the past to help make Kenyon the special place it is. This could mean giving a bit more, becoming an alumni volunteer, helping the student body through admissions or career mentoring (my neighbor across the street is applying to the class of 2026… which just makes me feel old!), attending a College event, submitting a class note found below (thanks to everyone that did so for this letter) or setting up a recurring monthly gift.

Thank you!
Chris Greene

There's a lot happening at Kenyon today.

We want you to be a part of it.
The Our Path Forward to the Bicentennial campaign is about building a strong  foundation for Kenyon’s third century by growing our endowment and strengthening alumni connections. Get involved by:

Staying connected to Kenyon
You may only be a Kenyon student for four years, but you’re a member of our alumni community for life. The Office of Alumni and Parent Engagement strives to make it easy — and fun — to stay connected. GET INVOLVED

Making a gift

Gifts of all sizes add up: every year, gifts of $100 or less to the Kenyon Fund total more than $250,000. Also, every dollar given to the Kenyon Access Initiative between now and June 2026 will be matched and used to create permanent new scholarship funds to enroll exceptional students with limited resources and those who are ineligible for government aid. MAKE A GIFT

Class of 2004 Fall Notes

Maeve Corish welcomed a baby boy, Benjamin Luis, to the world on Friday, August 13th! At 6 weeks old he has mastered the arts of fake eating, fake sleeping, and fake crying.

Alex Neuman and Merritt Kanan welcomed their second baby into this tumultuous world just before they locked down at the start of the pandemic in March 2020. They hope to introduce Zachary to Kenyon at our 20th reunion (as they did for Liam at our 15th reunion). Hopefully it will be safe and they will see you there!

Adam Lavitt is living in Providence, RI with husband, Alex Weissman.  Both are learning how to be rabbis during a pandemic (turns out there was no class on that in rabbinical school!). Adam is serving as rabbi and chaplain at Orchard Cove (a campus of Hebrew SeniorLife made famous by Atul Gawande's Being Mortal) - and as a Spiritual Director for two rabbinical seminaries, and within his growing private practice (all online at this point!).

Harrison David Rivers has spent the fall in London filming Season 1B of the HBO series THE NEVERS for which he is a Story Editor. He is also developing a TV series with HBO based on E. Lynn Harris's novel INVISIBLE LIFE. He continues to work as a playwright, with upcoming productions in San Francisco, Hartford, Philadelphia, Atlanta and St. Paul.

James Lewis writes that he is terrified of turning 40 but grateful that Rachel and he don't celebrate birthdays. James was in Gambier this summer and was outraged by how much has changed including the Market and the bookstore. He also realized that he never really cared about the upside down tree while he was a student. Why is that? Anyways, he’s just hanging out, teaching high school kids in Cleveland and living in a one bedroom apartment with his lovely wife and two cats. Two less cats and the situation would be quite ideal (I kid, I kid…).

Paul Schmid, Logan Winston, and Grace Van Cleave (in spirit) gathered in Nantucket in August for Teddy Symes' 40th birthday party. In true Kenyon fashion, a portable speaker and a few beverages was all that was needed to have an excellent dance party.

Jamie Hawken and Diana Torres Hawken recently celebrated 18 years dating (since senior year at Kenyon!) and 14 years married; they live in the Chicagoland area (Naperville) with their three kids: Melanie (10), Ryan (9) and Erin (6). Jamie's been both busy and happy at Utility Concrete Products. Diana has since become a Board member for the Naperville Education Foundation, the 501(c)3 arm of the kids' school district and the Vice President of the kids' Home & School. She is a Membership co-chair for AAUW-Naperville (a girls and women's advocacy group) and was recently invited to serve on the City of Naperville's Human Rights and Fair Housing Commission. Lastly, to keep her pulse on the Latinx/Hispanic community, she is on the steering committee for Nuestro Futuro through the Chicago Community Trust (and also the largest affinity fund in the nation dedicated to Latinx philanthropy).

Katie (Jackson) Cannon moved with her husband, Brian Cannon '05, to a little village you may have heard of... Gambier! They bought a 5 acre farm north of the campus and are so excited to get involved with the Kenyon community once more. Katie works at another school in Mount Vernon, Knox Technical Center, and at their farm they have lots of fun plans but the first one is to clear the acres of what is currently weeds. They'll keep us posted!

Carolyn Wendler is still living in Brooklyn and teaching at Spence. Small returns to normalcy, such as using paper and pencils and seeing all the students' eyes (not faces yet!) without a screen, have been amazing. Best of all, her son is back for in-person second grade. He's still pining for normal school activities like going to the music room, rather than being in his classroom all day, or having a Scholastic book fair. Some day! Her family had fun summer play dates with Rachel Ebner and her daughters. The children declared Carolyn and Rachel to be incredibly boring on their last get together so they tried to convince them that they used to throw parties. The kids were skeptical. Carolyn hopes everyone is hanging in there!

Garrick Vance writes: “Where did 2021 go when we haven't processed 2020 yet?” Garrick is still enjoying Austin, Texas and staying busy as some things get back to normal. He’s been enjoying helping out with the Philander Chase Conservancy and hopes to get more involved as we all start to travel again.

Kerry Shannon recently finished her Emergency Medicine residency at Johns Hopkins and has moved with her two kids and husband to the Oregon coast where she is now working in a small critical access hospital.
