Kenyon Class of 2002 Fall Class Letter
| |
| Dear classmates,
Kenyon couldn’t be more Kenyon than it is in the fall. I fondly remember breezes to balance out the afternoon sun, crunchy leaves blanketing everything in autumn colors and an endless supply of friendly faces to greet you along Middle Path. Whatever the season, I look forward to running into you on the Hill again soon, especially since we haven’t had a chance to reconnect there in some time.
And what a campus we’ll have to return to! Chalmers Library is open and beautiful. All four classes are studying together again in Gambier. (With a bonus first-year cohort finishing a semester in Copenhagen!) And plans are taking shape for an unforgettable Reunion 2022 on the Hill. (Mark your calendar for the weekend of May 27, as I can’t wait to celebrate with you all!) Your reunion committee is already hard at work planning what promises to be a memorable weekend!
In other exciting campus news, the College just shared its new strategic plan that will guide its planning and actions leading up to the bicentennial in 2024 and beyond. You will be pleased to see it includes core elements like developing a computer science program informed by the liberal arts; enrolling, retaining and graduating a student body that is representative of the talent and diversity of our nation and the world; implementing a holistic approach to health and wellness, with an emphasis on mental health; and expanding its commitment to environmental responsibility.
You have also likely heard the announcement of the Kenyon Access Initiative which will bring more high-achieving students to Kenyon thanks to a $25 million matching grant from the Schuler Education Foundation. Any amount we give through this Kenyon Access Initiative will be matched 1:1 and will go to a new scholarship for students from families with limited means and those ineligible for government aid — up to $25 million. This is a tremendous opportunity for Kenyon.
I could go on about these two pieces of Kenyon news, but lucky for you, I don’t have to. Scroll on to learn more about Kenyon’s strategic plan and the Kenyon Access Initiative (and how they fit into our 2024 bicentennial celebration).
As you read about what’s in store for Kenyon’s future, I hope you’ll consider supporting today’s students with a gift to the Kenyon Fund in honor of our upcoming reunion and (if you have the ability) making an additional gift to the Kenyon Access Initiative that has the potential to bring 50 additional talented students to Kenyon each year.
Kenyon couldn’t be Kenyon without involved and supportive alumni like us. As the bicentennial draws closer, I challenge each of you to do a little more than you have in the past to help keep Kenyon the special place it is. This could mean becoming an alumni volunteer, attending a College event, submitting a class note, or setting up a recurring monthly gift.
I hope that you and your family are doing well, and I hope I have the chance to reconnect with you sometime soon.
Many thanks, Sandy Bryant

Making a gift
Gifts of all sizes add up: every year, gifts of $100 or less to the Kenyon Fund total more than $250,000. I (Sandy Bryant) continue to live in Lebanon, NH and work at Kimball Union Academy where I run the school’s annual fund and coach Boys JV Tennis. I continue to run races and play lots of tennis. I look forward to seeing everyone in May for our reunion! Please do let me know if you are in NH’s Upper Valley anytime soon.
Chris Van Nostrand writes “Sarah ’03 and I moved back to Evanston, IL after almost a decade in the Bay Area. It was a great adventure, but we’re excited to be near family again as we raise our two boys. Sarah is finishing her doctorate in clinical psych while I’m working as Chief Marketing Officer at a law school and running an online strength coaching practice on the side (www.strengthwisebarbell.com). We’ve been very fortunate to stay healthy during the pandemic and hope the same for all classmates and their families.”
Winston Sale reports “It has been an exciting year to be a mortgage banking regulator with home prices soaring and mortgage rates at historic lows. But, it has been an even more exciting year to be an entrepreneur. During lockdown last winter, I taught myself to sew and started making fleece jackets for my miniature Dachshunds. This winter I plan to launch Winston's Western Wiener Wear on Etsy, offering a complete line of cowboy-themed coats and accessories for Dachshunds and their owners. With a little luck I hope to grow my basement business into a wiener dog apparel empire.”
Eleanna Anagnos writes “I hope everyone is well during these enduring times. I have made Mexico City my home city and I love it here. I am excited to share that some of my work was recently acquired by the Tisch Family Art Collection!! I also have a solo exhibition slated to open January 20th in NYC at High Noon Gallery (LES). I will be in town for several weeks. If you are around, please drop me a line. I would love to visit.”
Emily (Briggs) Vincent reports “Our family relocated to Denver, CO in July after being in Virginia for 10 years. We're settling into our new life pretty well and are finding that there are a lot of things to rebuild after putting down roots in the DC area. Andrew '03 is enjoying his new job and I continue my anti-racism work. Our three kiddos are making new friends at school and are proving their resilience.”
Elkinsette Clinton writes “I have now been living in Georgia for almost 6 years. I bought my first home last year, which was really exciting and a major milestone for me as I feared homeownership. My daughter has started freshman year in high school and is growing up to be an amazing young woman. I have made a transition from the corporate world as an employee to doing corporate training and coaching as a consultant through my business. This was a dream of mine for some time and I finally moved forward and executed my plans. This year has had its ups and downs but so grateful for the many opportunities I have been given.”
Stephanie (Spaulding) Hoffman reports “I’ve felt more connected to Kenyon this past year with all of the virtual offerings. My eldest is starting high school soon and both kids are looking forward to visiting campus for the first time at our 20-year reunion. I’m enjoying the fine Florida weather by volunteering at my third medieval fair weekend in November.”
Cary Snyder writes “My wife and I welcomed our second child, Max Mullin, on June 3. Max has made our 2-year-old, Oliver, a proud big brother. I continue to work as a commercial litigation defense attorney in Cleveland and am looking forward to making the short drive to Gambier for reunion on Memorial Day weekend!”
Lisa (Beauchamp) Martell reports “I am looking forward to attending our class reunion in person and seeing everyone! Our son is 6 and while we did not plan on bringing him 5-years ago, it turned out to be a lot of fun, so we’ll make it a family affair again this year. I hope others will also!”
Sarah (Handyside) Daily writes “Maggie Aisenbrey and Jeremy Suhr spent a week on Martha’s Vineyard this summer with Sarah and her husband, Sean. Against their better judgment, they brought along their collective brood of four boys, ages 4-9, who got along swimmingly.”
Until next time, be well!
