Kenyon Class of 2001 Fall Class Letter
| |
| Dear classmates,
One of the things I remember most about Kenyon is how beautiful and magical campus is in the fall. I’m talking cool breezes to balance out the afternoon sun, crunchy leaves blanketing everything in autumn colors and an endless supply of friendly faces to greet you along Middle Path. Whatever the season, I hope to run into you on the Hill again soon, especially since we sadly haven’t had a chance to reconnect there in some time.
And when we return for our next reunion, while the beauty and magic still remain, campus will look very different. Chalmers Library is open and beautiful. (Have you seen the disco ball-esque skylight feature?) All four classes are studying together again in Gambier. (With a bonus first-year cohort finishing a semester in Copenhagen!) And plans are taking shape for an unforgettable Reunion 2022 on the Hill. (Mark your calendar for the weekend of May 27. All alumni are invited to attend!)
In other exciting campus news, the College just shared its new strategic plan that will guide its planning and actions leading up to the bicentennial in 2024 and beyond. You will be pleased to see it includes core elements like developing a computer science program informed by the liberal arts; enrolling, retaining and graduating a student body that is representative of the talent and diversity of our nation and the world; implementing a holistic approach to health and wellness, with an emphasis on mental health; and expanding its commitment to environmental responsibility.
You have also likely heard the announcement of the Kenyon Access Initiative which will bring more high-achieving students to Kenyon thanks to a $25 million matching grant from the Schuler Education Foundation. Any amount we give through this Kenyon Access Initiative will be matched 1:1 and will go to a new scholarship for students from families with limited means and those ineligible for government aid — up to $25 million.
I could go on for pages about these two pieces of Kenyon news, but lucky for you, I don’t have to. Scroll on to learn more about Kenyon’s strategic plan and the Kenyon Access Initiative (and how they fit into our 2024 bicentennial celebration).
As you read about what’s in store for Kenyon’s future, I hope you’ll consider supporting today’s students with a gift to the Kenyon Fund and (if you have the ability) making an additional gift to the Kenyon Access Initiative that has the potential to bring 50 additional talented students to Kenyon each year.
Kenyon couldn’t be Kenyon without involved and supportive alumni like us. As the bicentennial draws closer, I challenge each of you to do a little more than you have in the past to help make Kenyon the special place it is. This could mean becoming an alumni volunteer, attending a College event, submitting a class note or setting up a recurring monthly gift.
As an extra reminder of the amazing relationships that have come out of our time at Kenyon, scroll down to read our class notes. If you missed your chance to submit your news this time, please feel free to send your news now and we will save it for the next letter. For those living where the climate changes this season, stay warm!
Thank you! Erin Shanahan

Making a gift
Gifts of all sizes add up: every year, gifts of $100 or less to the Kenyon Fund total more than $250,000. Emily Guy Birken co-wrote a new book entitled Stacked: Your Super Serious Guide to Modern Money Management, which will be available December 28, 2021. She will be on tour with her co-author, Joe Saul-Sehy in early 2022 to promote the book.
Nikki (Watson) Book says that although it wasn’t quite what we planned, it was fun to see and hear from some classmates at our virtual reunion this past spring! She sends well wishes and health to all her classmates and is looking forward to our next reunion when we can all return to the Hill!
After ten years in Chicago, Charlie “Chaz” Beck has returned to tropical Minneapolis to be closer to family. He and his wife purchased their first house and are flabbergasted at the additional maintenance of a standalone structure and yard versus their condo in Chicago. Charlie currently works at Elevate Services, creating software for lawyers.
After 20+ years, Sarah Hammel is excited to share her first class note! She reports that she has been living in Austin for fifteen years and has made it her official home. She is the Director of Community Support Programs at the Austin Humane Society, where she has worked the last nine years. Her primary role is working within the community to help keep pets out of animal shelters by helping their owners in need. They run pet food pantry events, spay/neuter and microchip clinics, and provide emergency fostering to assist pet owners who may be struggling. Sarah says that it is always an adventure but rewarding and fun to work in the animal welfare field! Outside of work, she participates in Dock Diving with her dog, raises a flock of backyard chickens, and pretends to know how to garden. If anyone would like to visit, please reach out!
Molly (McNamara) Meksavan is pleased to announce that she, her husband Frank, and son London (almost 3) welcomed Luna Isabella to the family on May 24, 2021.
Charlie Reinhardt reports that he, his wife, and son enjoyed a lot of bucket list camping trips this summer, including the Smokies (TN side) and Monongahela Forest in West Virginia. He is looking forward to seeing colleagues back at work soon at Vanguard, where he serves nonprofits as an OCIO consultant.
Erin Shanahan says that she is still enjoying practicing residential real estate law at a small Chicago-area law firm she joined at the beginning of the year. She reports that it still seems strange to be (finally) getting around to practicing law after passing the Bar seventeen years ago, but she loves what she does and hopes to keep expanding her business.
Sr. Jeana Visel, OSB says that earlier this year she received a Vital Worship Teacher-Scholar Grant from the Calvin Institute of Christian Worship. It has allowed her to bring her icon teacher, Marek Czarnecki, to Saint Meinrad Seminary and School of Theology as artist-in-residence four different weeks. The grant also provided a trip for her and her president-rector to go to Marek’s studio in CT for a week of intensive tutorial time. Through September and October, Marek and Sr. Jeana have an exhibit of some of their icons in the Saint Meinrad Archabbey Library exhibit space.
