Kenyon Class of 1990 Fall Class Letter
| |
| Dear classmates,
When you think of Kenyon you must surely think of the glorious autumns. Warm days, crisp nights, church bells, vibrant colors and the beginning of lifelong friendships. It was, and remains, a magic place.
A new Chalmers Library (a gift from an amazingly generous alumnus) has greeted students arriving on the Hill 35 years after our arrival. Our Olin was lovely in its own way but not built to last. All four classes are studying together again in Gambier whilst navigating a new normal. And plans are taking shape for an unforgettable Reunion 2022. (Mark your calendar for the weekend of May 27. All alumni are invited to attend!)
In other exciting campus news, the College just shared its new strategic plan that will guide its planning and actions leading up to the bicentennial in 2024 and beyond. It includes core elements like developing a computer science program informed by the liberal arts; enrolling, retaining and graduating a student body that is representative of the talent and diversity of our nation and the world; implementing a holistic approach to health and wellness, with an emphasis on mental health; and expanding its commitment to environmental responsibility.
You have also likely heard the announcement of the Kenyon Access Initiative which will bring more high-achieving students to Kenyon thanks to a $25 million matching grant from the Schuler Education Foundation. Any amount we give through this Kenyon Access Initiative will be matched 1:1 and will go to a new scholarship for students from families with limited means and those ineligible for government aid — up to $25 million. Scroll on to learn more about Kenyon’s strategic plan and the Kenyon Access Initiative (and how they fit into our 2024 bicentennial celebration).
As you read about what’s in store for Kenyon’s future, I hope you’ll consider supporting today’s students with a gift to the Kenyon Fund and (if you have the ability) making an additional gift to the Kenyon Access Initiative that has the potential to bring 50 additional talented students to Kenyon each year.
Kenyon couldn’t be Kenyon without our support. As the bicentennial draws closer, please join me and do a little more than you have in the past to help make Kenyon the special place it is. This could mean becoming an alumni volunteer, attending a College event, submitting a class note or setting up a recurring monthly gift.
Thank you for all you already do and if your travels bring you to the UK please come to Cambridge for a visit.
Best, Bill O’Hearn
And now for a sobering post 50 P.S. Is Kenyon already in your will? Let the College know about your planned giving by emailing daleiden1@kenyon.edu.

Making a gift
Gifts of all sizes add up: every year, gifts of $100 or less to the Kenyon Fund total more than $250,000. Also, every dollar given to the Kenyon Access Initiative between now and June 2026 will be matched and used to create permanent new scholarship funds to enroll exceptional students with limited resources and those who are ineligible for government aid. My illustrated historical fiction novel, Return of the Richmond Vampire, will be available from Grey Tower Books October 31st. It is about the 100th anniversary of the Church Hill Tunnel collapse which spawned the vampiric legend. For more see JonRakestraw.com / @JonRakestrawWriter / Instagram
Todd Van Fossen
I’m living in the Madison, Wisconsin area and working as the chief of program finance for the Wisconsin Department of Transportation. Also enjoying travel - even during the pandemic - and I recently returned from an amazing weeklong trip to Central Europe.

Our daughter continues down her path as a first responder, having just passed her national paramedic certification. She is now in charge of the truck when they receive the 911 call. Big step for her. While I no longer swim, bike and run like I used to, the athletic exploits have both evolved and continue. Now, it's an annual pilgrimage to the running track to execute a sub-5-minute mile. This June, I also placed third overall at the Mt. Evans Ascent, a 14.5-mile run up the highest paved road in North America, which tops out at 14,200ft. Never a dull moment!

Fred Richardson and his wife Jessica have moved to Austin. They miss Washington, DC even less than they thought they would.

As if 2020 were not exciting enough, I came down with COVID-19 in November. The pandemic Lock down didn't affect me much at the cancer center I was working at. It kept operating as usual except that we had to wear masks. However, several nurses came down with COVID in the fall, and I started getting symptoms on Election Day (I voted absentee). I was tested (drive thru) on Thursday, worsened over the weekend, and finally noticed that I was breathing rapidly by the next Wednesday, so I called 911. After a day in the ER, I spent a few days in the Step-down unit (NOT the ICU), where they weaned me off O2, and sent me to a rehab hospital. I had influenza ca. 1988, which was its own kind of misery, but this was much worse.
I practically had to learn to walk again, and spent several weeks there. I was released from COVID isolation right before Thanksgiving. Instead of spending the holiday with family, I had to settle for a Facetime call. I was sent home at the beginning of December, and recovered from the pneumonia after a few months. I got the Moderna vaccine, and will get my flu shot soon. I lost a lot of weight when I was really sick (one of my symptoms was anosmia), and after I returned to my normal weight, have managed to not shoot past it. I do NOT recommend this as a way to lose excess weight.
I was happy that there was a Zoom option for the Reunion, as I would not have been able to attend anything in person.
