Our Path Forward: The Campaign for Kenyon

Kenyon Class of 1989 Fall Class Letter

Hello, Fellow Reprobates!

I am writing from Central Virginia in the early fall, where it is still warm and humid. I am teaching at the University of Lynchburg when not giving political commentary on the local ABC affiliate between crop reports.

Kenyon couldn’t be more Kenyon than it is in the fall. Am I right? There are cool breezes to balance out the afternoon sun, crunchy leaves blanketing everything in autumn colors and an endless supply of friendly faces to greet you along Middle Path, probably some rain in there too. Did it ever rain in Gambier?  Whatever the season, here’s hoping you can make it back sometime soon to campus.

Remember the fall of ‘86 when there was a new library? Well, now is your chance to relive those heady days! Chalmers Library is open and beautiful, I am told. Additionally, all four classes are studying together again in Gambier. (With a bonus first-year cohort finishing a semester in Copenhagen!) And plans are taking shape for an unforgettable Reunion 2022 on the Hill. (Mark your calendar for the weekend of May 27. All alumni, from all classes, are invited to attend!)

In other exciting campus news, the College just shared its new strategic plan that will guide its planning and actions leading up to the bicentennial in 2024 (save space on your calendar for that too) and beyond. You will be pleased to see it includes core elements like developing a computer science program informed by the liberal arts; enrolling, retaining, and graduating a student body that is representative of the talent and diversity of our nation and the world; implementing a holistic approach to health and wellness, with an emphasis on mental health; and expanding its commitment to environmental responsibility.

I am proud to serve on the Alumni Board. One of the great new initiatives we heard about is the Kenyon Access Initiative which will bring more high-achieving students to Kenyon thanks to a $25 million matching grant from the Schuler Education Foundation. Any amount we give through this Kenyon Access Initiative will be matched 1:1 and will go to a new scholarship for students from families with limited means and those ineligible for government aid — up to $25 million.

I cannot stress enough how difficult it is for colleges to raise money that goes directly to scholarships. While it is nice to have new and up-to-date buildings, attracting excellent and diverse students is essential for Kenyon’s long-term prospects and scholarships will help that goal. This is what makes the Kenyon Access Initiative so important. So please consider making your gift directly to that initiative. Scroll on to learn more about Kenyon’s strategic plan and the Kenyon Access Initiative (and how they fit into our 2024 bicentennial celebration).

As you read about what’s in store for Kenyon’s future, I hope you’ll consider supporting today’s students with a gift to the Kenyon Fund and (if you have the ability) making an additional gift to the Kenyon Access Initiative that has the potential to bring 50 additional talented students to Kenyon each year.

So, sit down with your beverage of choice, add to the FADC tip jar, pop in the Frampton Comes Alive CD (yes, CD), read through some class notes, and think about getting involved in Kenyon through alumni volunteering, mentoring current students, attending a college event, submitting your own class note, or setting up a recurring monthly gift (instead of the FADC tip jar).

Thank you!
David Richards (aka Guru, aka Flounder)
P.S. Is Kenyon already in your will? Let the College know about your planned giving by emailing daleiden1@kenyon.edu.

Making a gift

Gifts of all sizes add up: every year, gifts of $100 or less to the Kenyon Fund total more than $250,000. Also, every dollar given to the Kenyon Access Initiative between now and June 2026 will be matched and used to create permanent new scholarship funds to enroll exceptional students with limited resources and those who are ineligible for government aid. MAKE A GIFT

Class of 1989 Fall Notes

Now to the good stuff, class notes!

Peter Hall writes: It has been a while but all is still good in southern NH. Eldest daughter started her freshman year at Case Western this fall for chemical engineering. Youngest daughter is a junior in high school and starting the whole college search. My how things have changed since I was accepted at Kenyon!

Margaret (Tuttle) Robinson writes: After teaching kindergarten for 8 years, I moved into the role of Gifted Intervention Specialist serving elementary students K-5. Also happy to report that I recently completed my Masters of Education with a focus on twice exceptional gifted learners.

Phil Fisher writes: I am working in Philadelphia as the CFO for a company that treats autistic kids. I just moved here so it’s the start of a new chapter. My eldest is a sophomore at Tulane, my daughter is in her senior year in high school and looking at colleges and my youngest is a freshman at St. Paul’s in New Hampshire. I pitched them all Kenyon, but my sales skills must be very poor… no takers. I look back on my years there with great fondness. Lots of fun. Hope you are all doing well!

Kyla Carlson writes: As I type, I'm having a flashback: I'm on campus, "stuck" in class, gazing out the window at a gorgeous fall day, anxiously longing to be outside and to get my TGIF on. The truth isn't far from the flashback: It's Friday. I'm sitting in Gund Commons at an Alumni Council meeting, gazing out the window at a gorgeous fall day, feeling a bit antsy and ready to soak up some campus and visit with fellow alums and current students. Fortunately, the meetings ended and I was able to make my longing a reality, including running into Chris Toft outside of the beautiful Chalmers Library. I also was able to spend time with my daughter, Shea ’25, who is a freshman, and finding her Kenyon way (without late-night Cove pizzas and cookies, which, quite frankly, breaks my mama heart). There wasn't any FADC, and we weren't allowed in Peirce, so I cannot report the presence (or absence) of a Friday patty melt, but I can report that it ended up being an awesome weekend just the same. In the news from my home in Kirkland, WA, I was fortunate to host a few fellow classmates this summer, including Andy Albrecht (and his lovely wife Jean '88) and the aforementioned Chris Toft. If you're ever in the Seattle area, give a holler, please! I also continue to see the lovely Abbe Jacobson Kopf on a regular basis, and we always spend time reminiscing and reminding ourselves that we'll always be 18 to each other. I've kept my pandemic sanity by working for the King County Library System, where I appreciate leaving the house and working with people each day. This extrovert does not do well with work from home or lockdowns!! I practice gratitude on the daily, always relishing the gift of my Kenyon education, friendships, and connections.

Johanna (Hall) Dickson writes: I’ve begun my career as an art teacher after earning my MAT in Art Education from George Mason University, Spring 2020. I’ve been teaching virtually and in-person since Fall 2020 in Northern Virginia. On the personal side, Tom and I now have two girls in high school, and one is a new driver as of this week! College isn’t far behind!

Chris Eaton writes: The Eatons are on the move again! Colleen Siders Eaton ‘87 and I packed up the dogs and the very old cat and have moved to the Denver area. I am pleased to join the leadership team for Merrill Lynch for the Denver area. This move is great for us as it reconnects us to our daughter who has lived in the Denver area for the last 4 years, and puts us closer to our preferred recreation areas. Always looking forward to any traveling alum who wish to connect.

Kristen (Bruno) McClusky writes: Does anyone really have any news?! My family has survived pandemic life without getting sick--or killing each other, so there's that! I'm still at Apple News. Kids are in 8th and 11th grades, so starting to think about college... My husband is hard-selling his alma mater, Carleton, but I'm optimistic our daughter will realize Kenyon is the obvious choice. Looking forward to seeing Brenda Burman in December!

Eric Williams writes: The past eighteen months have been the longest and most difficult of my professional life. But the work is meaningful. I would love to connect with any other Kenyon alumni who work as health care chaplains.

Susie Bloom Hudgins writes: A great summer spent doing very little after an intense year of teaching in-person and virtually. From pasta making to bread baking to beer brewing, my sons and I kept busy enough to tackle a kitchen renovation. I had a great visit in Georgetown with Heather Lee Rue, Lopa Purohit Kolluri, Kelly Stanton Fordon, and Talal Al-Sowayel. No year would be complete without a visit with Melissa Thorn Tierney. In May 2022 my second son will graduate from Kenyon ending 8 years as a Kenyon parent. Yet to be determined if son #4 wants to head to Hill but there are a few more years before that needs to be decided. I hope everyone is well; if ever in RVA, give a shout!

Sue Rodefer is still happily living in Doha, Qatar (year 28 now! -- woo hoo!), still working at Carnegie Mellon University's branch campus there as their Director of Educational Initiatives. I am headed to NL shortly to do some college visits with my son who is a high school senior this year. Next year Qatar hosts the World Cup in Nov-Dec so I am already dreading the throngs of humanity that will descend upon Doha then. Possibly considering relocating to the States (maybe Durango) in the not-too-far-off future, so if anyone finds themselves in my neck of the woods between now and then, hit me up! I'd love to see some K80s folks and show you around my adopted home here in the Arabian Gulf!

Joan (O’Hanlon) Curry writes: I spent a great week up on Cape Cod this summer watching baseball in the Cape Cod League. My son Aidan has been down in the Arizona Rookie League with the Texas Rangers. I did get to see him pitch once which is better than what happened in 2020. I am hoping he makes it to affiliate ball next year! Can you tell I'm trying to make him my retirement plan? Amelia spent 3 weeks at Ballet Austin and wasn't opposed to applying to University of Texas. She's a junior and has decided to go to nursing school. Even though many of you will not believe this, I did not push her towards this, but am proud nonetheless. I am finishing my term as president of my professional nursing organization and am back in school for my DNP at Case Western Reserve University, virtually of course. Started in Ohio, might as well end it in Ohio.
