Kenyon Class of 1977 Fall Class Letter
| |
| Dear 77s,
Nothing is quite like Kenyon in October, right? The warmth of the afternoon sun and light chill of the evening air. Crispy leaves and brilliant colors. That gravel crunch accenting the flow of friendly faces along Middle Path. Whatever the season – except February! – it's a great time to see old friends on the Hill.
I'm hoping we'll have the opportunity to do so again soon, especially since Kenyon is expecting a post-covid alumni cluster bash next Memorial Day weekend. Plans are taking shape for an unforgettable Reunion 2022 on the Hill. So mark your calendar for the weekend of May 27.
As we approach number 45 there's a lot of reason to celebrate. The new Chalmers Library is an architectural highlight, with its colorful, naturally-lit "disco-ball" atrium – though I suspect the effect is more like a Fillmore light show. And all four classes are studying together in Gambier again – except of course the record-breaking, first-year cohort wrapping its first semester in Copenhagen!
Plus the College just shared its new strategic plan that will guide its decisions and programs heading into and beyond Kenyon's milestone bicentennial in 2024. This includes key elements like expanded commitment to environmental responsibility, a new liberal-arts-informed computer science program, and enrolling, retaining and graduating a student body that's representative of our nation's talent and diversity.
Speaking of which, perhaps the most inspiring announcement is about the Kenyon Access Initiative. This will bring more high-achieving, under-served students to Kenyon thanks to a $25 million matching grant from the Schuler Education Foundation. Any amount we give through the Kenyon Access Initiative will be matched dollar for dollar. This will fuel an incredibly forward-looking new scholarship for students from families with limited means or ineligible for government aid — up to $25 million. It's a really big deal.
I could go on about these two pieces of news, but, fortunately, I can spare you. If you scroll down to the next section, you can learn more about Kenyon’s strategic plan, the Kenyon Access Initiative, and how they fit into Kenyon’s 2024 bicentennial celebration.
As you read about what’s in store for Kenyon, I hope you’ll consider supporting today’s students with a gift to the Kenyon Fund and, if you have the ability, making an additional gift to the Kenyon Access Initiative, with its potential to bring 50 additional talented students to Kenyon each year.
Kenyon couldn’t be Kenyon without involved and supportive alumni like us. Our ongoing commitment has been instrumental in the transformation of Kenyon from a sleepy campus on a remote hill into a dynamic institution designed to serve the 21st century. As the bicentennial draws closer, I challenge each of you to do a little more than you have in the past to help keep Kenyon the special place it is. So think about becoming an alumni volunteer, attending a College event, or even just submitting a class note.
Whatever you decide, thank you! I look forward to seeing you in Gambier next Spring. Jim Desrosier
P.S. Is Kenyon already in your will? Let the College know about your planned giving by emailing daleiden1@kenyon.edu.

Making a gift
Gifts of all sizes add up: every year, gifts of $100 or less to the Kenyon Fund total more than $250,000. Also, every dollar given to the Kenyon Access Initiative between now and June 2026 will be matched and used to create permanent new scholarship funds to enroll exceptional students with limited resources and those who are ineligible for government aid. Linda Isako Angst writes “Greetings from Portland, the first time in 4 years we have not had to deal with smoke or fire threats in our beautiful Pacific NW autumn. Since leaving my full time academic career a few years ago, I've been engaged via a couple of local writing groups in a return to the creative writing that originally sent me to Kenyon in 1973. A prose poem that I initially penned in September 2018 just as the Kavanaugh hearings were wrapping up is still in the works, but the wordsmithing is nearly done--just in time to address the latest onslaught of attacks on women's rights via Texas. Recall that when we entered college in the fall of 1973, we were the first class of women to enjoy the benefits of a woman's right to choose regarding reproductive rights. In other news, I am a lucky new member of our Class of '77 Reunion Planning Committee--this after attending my first '77 reunion in 2017 for our 40th and a year-plus of serendipitous monthly reunions with classmates familiar and less familiar via Zoom--perhaps one of the few upsides to life in pandemic times. I'll be reaching out to ‘my’ Class of 77ers in the next months to update you on Reunion 45 plans as they develop.”
John Bogasky says his “pandemic perk is hosting Class of 77 Zoom calls – with a tip o’ the hat to Jerry Mindes for kicking this off. We’ve met every month since April 2020. Nearly 50 classmates have joined in so far. They are great fun! Email me to hop on: johnbogasky@hotmail.com.”
Joe Dreher relo’ed to his new 1000-acre spread in Liberty Township 12 miles from Gambier. Check it out @ Dreher’s Grey Horse Farm.
Jayne Danska visited with her daughter Fiona ’22 on her return to campus this fall. “Glad to have the vibrant students back on the Hill.”
Mary Colleen Erb Chisholm reports she’s “resumed my volunteer role at respite care. Mask mandates and social distancing are incredibly difficult for elderly and dementia patients. We keep them busy and happy to give their caregivers much needed breaks. The leadership and staff are exceptional. And I’m still finding wonderful and intriguing new places around Charleston. Looking forward to visiting family and friends this summer. Hope everyone stays well and safe.”
Don Gregory writes, pithily, “Thank you, Kenyon!”
Amy Kirshbaum Harbison gushes, “Our first grandchild, Luka, was born 2 weeks before the COVID-19 shutdown. Definitely the highlight of the year. It’s been wonderful Zooming regularly with Linda Sofman Bullock, Nina Freedman, Julie Stern D'Alessandro, and Susan Zimmerman Sacks (all '77). I’m still a part-time certified coach working with leaders in transition for our County government.”
Kristin Knopf celebrates now retiring for good. “COVID avoidances got my husband Brian and me biking 20+ miles five or six times a week. Got ‘both shots’ but still wearing a mask on our rides. I do a lot of Zooms for Literacy Source, my nonprofit passion. It serves mostly immigrant adult learners to improve basic literacy and tech skills for free. I’ve been on the Board for 9 years.”
Paula Stoeke says she too enjoys the monthly Zooms. “It is really inspiring to hear about everyone's vocations, avocations and service work, and travels, trials and future plans. We’re all more alike than we are different. The Covid ‘pause’ allowed me to focus more on writing and painting. I'm so grateful. It was a valuable time to assess and prioritize life. Hoping there was at least a sliver of a silver lining for you all."
Rosemary Williams Begley continues to paint for Disney and will be signing at the Epcot International Festival of the Arts 2022 in the Disney Artist Tent.
Victoria Wyatt is still teaching at University of Victoria. She’s “active in the Faculty Association and enjoying the Equity Committee of the Canadian Association of University Teachers. My son Robert (27) lives in town and my daughter Marita (25) attends York U. in Toronto. She’s been taking her courses online from here for the past year. It’d be great to hear from classmates coming to Victoria, BC once we're traveling again!”
