Our Path Forward: The Campaign for Kenyon

Kenyon Class of 1976 Fall Class Letter

Greetings fellow members of the Class of ‘76,

Nothing could be more Kenyon than Kenyon in the fall… Or maybe in the winter… or perhaps the spring… But fall was when we stepped foot on campus to begin our years of study that seemed to go by much too quickly. That first fall we were surrounded by cool breezes that balanced out the afternoon sun, fallen leaves that blanketed everything in autumn colors and an endless supply of friendly faces that greeted for the first time along Middle Path, and that we would continue to do for the falls, winters, and springs that would follow. I look forward to being able to once again say hello to you along Middle Path, especially since we haven’t had a chance to reconnect there in some time.

An item of good news is that all four classes are once again studying together again in Gambier. (With a bonus first-year cohort finishing a semester in Copenhagen!) And another is that plans are taking shape for an unforgettable Reunion 2022 on the Hill. (Mark your calendar for the weekend of May 27. All alumni are invited to attend!) The campus is not the exact same one we knew as students - though some things do remain the same, we will have a fabulous new look to the campus to return to and explore. Almost like we were stepping foot on the Hill for the first time! One of many changes is that Chalmers Library is open and beautiful. (Have you seen the disco ball-esque skylight feature? I haven’t, but I plan to check it out when I return). We will have so many things, new and old, to check out upon our arrival.

In other exciting campus news, the College just shared its new strategic plan that will guide its planning and actions leading up to the bicentennial in 2024 and beyond. You will be pleased to see it includes core elements like developing a computer science program informed by the liberal arts; enrolling, retaining and graduating a student body that is representative of the talent and diversity of our nation and the world; and expanding its commitment to environmental responsibility.

You have also likely heard the announcement of the Kenyon Access Initiative which will bring more high-achieving students to Kenyon thanks to a $25 million matching grant from the Schuler Education Foundation. Any amount we give through this Kenyon Access Initiative will be matched 1:1 and will go to a new scholarship for students from families with limited means and those ineligible for government aid — up to $25 million.

I could go on for pages about these two pieces of Kenyon news, but lucky for you, I don’t have to. Scroll on to learn more about Kenyon’s strategic plan and the Kenyon Access Initiative (and how they fit into our 2024 bicentennial celebration).

As you read about what’s in store for Kenyon’s future, I hope you’ll consider supporting today’s students with a gift to the Kenyon Fund and (if you have the ability) making an additional gift to the Kenyon Access Initiative that has the potential to bring 50 additional talented students to Kenyon each year.

Kenyon couldn’t be Kenyon without involved and supportive alumni like us. As Kenyon’s bicentennial draws closer, I challenge each of you to do a little more than you have in the past to help make Kenyon the special place it is. This could mean becoming an alumni volunteer, attending a College event, submitting a class note or setting up a recurring monthly gift.

Thank you!
Ellen H. Mower

P.S. Is Kenyon already in your will? Let the College know about your planned giving by emailing daleiden1@kenyon.edu.

P.P.S. Enjoy the notes from fellow classmates that follow! And big thank you to all that submitted them!

There's a lot happening at Kenyon today.

We want you to be a part of it.
The Our Path Forward to the Bicentennial campaign is about building a strong  foundation for Kenyon’s third century by growing our endowment and strengthening alumni connections. Get involved by:

Staying connected to Kenyon
You may only be a Kenyon student for four years, but you’re a member of our alumni community for life. The Office of Alumni and Parent Engagement strives to make it easy — and fun — to stay connected. GET INVOLVED

Making a gift

Gifts of all sizes add up: every year, gifts of $100 or less to the Kenyon Fund total more than $250,000. Also, every dollar given to the Kenyon Access Initiative between now and June 2026 will be matched and used to create permanent new scholarship funds to enroll exceptional students with limited resources and those who are ineligible for government aid. MAKE A GIFT

Class of 1976 Fall Notes

Deborah Boone Tepper - Still working at Dartmouth in NH and living on the Cape. All is well. Had a lovely beach walk in Chatham last month with Eddie Cohen ’74 who is thriving in pursuit of multiple endeavors with film and stage, as well as the wine business. Enjoyed catching up on all the news, including updates on my Kenyon classmates.

Christopher Carey - Retired, have camper van and kayaks, plenty of power tools, and generally enjoying life during the Pandemic. Also, now I'm a grandfather!

Lynn (Manierre) Cuthbert - My husband and I are still surprised to be back in Ohio - in Cincinnati for the past 7.5 years where I continue to work at GE Aviation, while my 3 daughters and one 2 y/o grandson are scattered around the world - in Indy, Austin and Geneva. I just returned from visiting my youngest daughter in Switzerland for several weeks, traveling all around the beautiful Swiss country via rail. Makes up for the tough year and a half we had been through! We didn’t lose any family to Covid, but lost my Mom in April 2021 - very sad for our family. Hope all my fellow Kenyonites are doing well!

Stephen Grant - I retired from the local public school district last year, intending to do some substitute teaching this year. Due to an unfilled vacancy, I have been subbing every day, which I have been enjoying. Soon I'll be off Wednesdays and I plan to add Fridays off in November.

Sneaking up on retirement one day at a time. Had a wonderful visit again with Charlie Rabinowitz and his wife, Wendy, in Ogunquit, Maine this past August. Sending best wishes to all 76ers and especially my Phi Kap brothers.

David Griffith - I continue to serve as Executive Director of Episcopal Community Services in Philadelphia and as Chairperson of the Academy of Natural Sciences as well as a director of a number of for profit companies. Retirement is much harder than I thought. Jacqui and I continue to see a number of classmates and marvel at how none of us are getting old.

Janet Heckman - It was wonderful to be back on campus for the alumni council meeting Sept 25. We could really feel the vibrancy and excitement of the students being back in person. Just after the meeting Dermot and I returned to our home on the Wild West coast of Ireland. Keeping busy with my independent directorships in Kazakhstan. Hope our paths cross soon.

Leslie Hollenbaugh Ross - Peter Ross ‘76 and I are spending our retired lives in Philadelphia and in Eastham, Cape Cod. We recently sold our 223 yr old row house in Philadelphia and moved a few blocks west and north to an apartment on Washington Square as our city place, where we have the pleasure of seeing Independence Hall every day. We have 3 grandkids ages 11.5, 8 and 4. Our nuclear pod includes 2 English Setters and 2 tuxedo cats. I’m doing lots of fiber art, singing in our small but mighty St Peter’s Philadelphia church choir, walking our beach, collecting sea glass, and watching/reading British cop/crime/mystery stories. We love connecting with our classmates and friends from Kenyon. Recently in person: Dave Griffith, Betsy Murdock Myers, Jim Frank. By Zoom: Chris Carey, Amy and Rich Haskell, Ken Thompson. By phone: Jim Borgman

Mark Leonard - Just spent a great few days with George Harbison and Bruce Broxterman at George’s home on Mullett Lake (Michigan). Beautiful area and time well spent hanging out together and having a lot of “yucks” looking back on our Kenyon days.

Mary (Fountain) Loesch - Hello all. Grandmotherhood is wonderful! With a wintertime covid pause, I still teach taichi. As my daughter has moved back to town, I get to be with my granddaughter, Maeve, several days a week. Weightlifting, reading, singing and laughter.
Happiness.

Susan Shackelford - Just got home from a trip to beautiful New Mexico with Susan Durham and Karen Templeton-Somers. Also had a short but sweet visit here in Cincinnati with Belinda Rankins Swire and her husband Gil recently. My life is certainly made richer by my friendships forged at Kenyon.

Kim Straus - Although not considering Kenyon, my son and I visited campus this summer on a Midwest tour of colleges. Nice to see the new almost-completed library, walk down Middle Path and do a little shopping in the bookstore.

Doug Sutton-Ramspeck - My wife (Beth Sutton-Ramspeck) and I have now retired from teaching at The Ohio State University and have moved to Black Mountain, North Carolina, where we live atop Wallace Mountain and have bears as neighbors. My latest book of poems, Book of Years (2021), is recently out from Cloudbank Books. Information about the collection can be found at DougRamspeck.com.
