Our Path Forward: The Campaign for Kenyon

Kenyon Class of 1970 Fall Class Letter

Gentlemen,

So, the College wants me to remind you about Kenyon in the fall.  I’m sure that we all remember cool breezes to balance out the afternoon sun, crunchy leaves blanketing everything in autumn colors and the friendly faces greeting you along Middle Path.  As you read this, that great weather will, in all likelihood, be succeeded by late fall and early winter weather.  The Monday after fall dance weekend our freshman year was fricking cold at 8 a.m., and Herr Hecht proceeded to start class with a quick quiz, then adding another at the end.  Ah, the joys of learning.  I, however, look forward to running into you on the Hill again next spring, especially since we haven’t had a chance to celebrate our 50th reunion in person.

And what a campus we’ll have to return to visit! Chalmers Library is open and beautiful. There is a disco ball-esque skylight feature (the concept is retro yet new). All four classes are studying together again in Gambier.  Somehow there is a bonus first-year cohort finishing a semester in Copenhagen (Toto, we’re not in Kansas or Ohio anymore).

And plans are taking shape for an unforgettable Reunion 2022 on the Hill.  Mark your calendar for the weekend of May 27, 2022. All alumni are invited to attend and the 50th reunion classes (’70, ’71, and ’72) will be warmly welcomed. The College will be offering housing by class year. A specific location is still in progress but they are leaning towards Caples Hall for the 50th classes. Caples is equipped with an elevator and air conditioning.  Remember, it is still a dorm and not like a hotel. We will be on a high priority list for registration and you should register as soon as that tier opens. Housing and social room space will be based on the number of returning alumni from each class year so the earlier you respond, the better! When the announcement comes for room reservations, run, don’t walk, to your trusty electronic device to commit to coming to Gambier. Or, pull it out of your pocket and do the right thing.

In other exciting campus news, the College just shared its new strategic plan that will guide planning and actions leading up to the bicentennial in 2024 and beyond. You will be pleased to see it includes core elements like developing a computer science program informed by the liberal arts; enrolling, retaining and graduating a student body that is representative of the talent and diversity of our nation and the world; and expanding its commitment to environmental responsibility.

You have also likely heard the announcement of the Kenyon Access Initiative which will bring more high-achieving students to Kenyon thanks to a $25 million matching grant from the Schuler Education Foundation. Any amount we give through this Kenyon Access Initiative will be matched 1:1 and will go to a new scholarship for students from families with limited means and those ineligible for government aid — up to $25 million.

Scroll on to learn more about Kenyon’s strategic plan and the Kenyon Access Initiative (and how they fit into our 2024 bicentennial celebration).

As you read about what’s in store for Kenyon’s future, I hope you’ll consider supporting today’s students with a gift to the Kenyon Fund and (if you have the ability) making an additional gift to the Kenyon Access Initiative that has the potential to bring 50 additional talented students to Kenyon each year.

Kenyon couldn’t be Kenyon without involved and supportive alumni like us. As the bicentennial draws closer, I challenge each of you to do a little more than you have in the past to help make Kenyon the special place it is. This could mean becoming an alumni volunteer, attending a College event, submitting a class note or setting up a recurring monthly gift.

As always,
Mike Hill

P.S. Is Kenyon already in your will? Let the College know about your planned giving by emailing daleiden1@kenyon.edu.

Making a gift

Gifts of all sizes add up: every year, gifts of $100 or less to the Kenyon Fund total more than $250,000. Also, every dollar given to the Kenyon Access Initiative between now and June 2026 will be matched and used to create permanent new scholarship funds to enroll exceptional students with limited resources and those who are ineligible for government aid. MAKE A GIFT

Class of 1970 Fall Notes

Bill Paraska: Had not seen any Monarch butterflies in our gardens ever. Did see some caterpillars last year but no evidence that they survived and transformed to butterflies. This year saw more caterpillars and decided to harvest them, hatch them and release. With no experience but lots of good tribal knowledge from those who have tried this, Susan and I successfully raised (inside our house!) and released 2 dozen just in time for the annual migration. More milkweed being planted to be ready for next year. Really is something to see.

Daniel Mark Epstein: We are enjoying life in Gambier, with recent journeys to visit classmate Randy St. John in upstate New York, and Paris for a couple of weeks. I published an essay on Dante recently in The New Criterion, and a poem in the 40th anniversary issue of the same magazine. My edition of the Diaries of Edna St. Vincent Millay will be published by Yale Press in February of 2022.

Peter Fluchere: Some days it feels like I'm 73, some days more, some days less. '20 and '21 are both eminently forgettable years (so far). Semi-retirement is great, I'm working less and increasing my fees. Everyone is healthy and working. One college freshman, another bound soon. Lots more in a few years. Anybody got a nice Studebaker for sale?

Paul Keiner: Deb and I had an eventful summer as we finally got to Italy for our son James' celebration of his marriage to Ashley Smith. It was a beautiful trip to the Amalfi coast: I was asked to officiate the ceremony, and we got around well enough, even with the covid restrictions.

I am still semi-retired, tutoring at New England College and still singing with the Kokes Klassics.

Recently I was able to take our classmate, Bob Plunkett, to a performance of Pippin presented at the Weathervane Theater, just outside of Whitefield, NH, where Bob is doing well at an assisted living facility. Bob is in good health and is still enjoying crossword puzzles, reading the paper and maybe catching some of his New York teams on TV. Having done a considerable amount of acting over the years, seeing live theater is probably his favorite outside activity, and this performance did not disappoint. He especially enjoys hearing from classmates, so if you need his contact information, just shoot me an email.

Ned Smyth: I have made my living as an artist since graduation, showing in galleries and making large Public Sculptures around the country. This Pandemic year, I had two exhibitions. I showed 6x8' photos, 8' sculptures, and small bronzes at the Shirley Fiterman Gallery in NYC, and mosaic palm columns I made in the 70s, at Landcraft Park in Mattituck Long Island. I was also fortunate to carve a 24 ton stone sculpture for a client in Florida. The piece was computer carved, from 3D models I scanned from two found stones, and then shipped to Florida on two flatbed trucks.

Perry Warren: Looking forward to the 50th. Our daughter will there for her 20th. It’ll be fun.

Robert Boruchowitz:
I received the Innovation in Criminal Justice Education Award as the Seattle University Criminal Justice, Criminology and Forensics Department Advisory Committee Member of the Year.

A paper I prepared with research assistants Jamie Wilson and Vanesa Hernandez Rodriguez on Racial Disparity and Pubic Defense in Washington was included as an appendix in Seattle University Law School Professor Bob Chang’s Task Force report on Race and Washington's Criminal Justice System: 2021 Report to the Washington Supreme Court.

Richard McManus: Yikes! So Night Train and St. John's Wood had our first IRL practice in June. The bands blended well, as Peter Moffitt ’72 and Peter Muller were amazing leaders in this new synthesis. We HOPE to play for you all at our "reunion," perhaps in 2070, when it will be our 100th! Meanwhile we are trying to figure out how to get more practices in. I gained another grandchild, Wesley Curis, who is the size of a 3 year old though only about 8 months old. Life has been pretty good despite the pandemic, I sail, I go to as much live music as I can and whenever possible I see my four daughters and three grandchildren. Hope you are all well!
