Kenyon Class of 1969 Fall Class Letter
| |
| Dear ’69 Classmates,
Kenyon couldn’t be more Kenyon than it is in the fall. Am I right? I’m talking cool breezes to balance out the afternoon sun, crunchy leaves blanketing everything in autumn colors and an endless supply of friendly faces to greet you along Middle Path. However, for some reason, the weather still hasn’t turned brisk and we’re still enjoying uncharacteristic warmth in Ohio this October. Whatever the season, I look forward to running into you on the Hill again soon, especially since we haven’t had a chance to reconnect there since our 50th in May 2019.
And what a campus we’ll have to return to! Chalmers Library is open and beautiful (have you seen the disco ball-esque skylight feature?). If you want to see pictures of the new library and progress on the West Quad, you can check it out at Chalmers Library | Kenyon College using a Ctrl+Click when you get this electronically or type https://www.kenyon.edu/kenyon-on-a-tour/chalmers-library/ in your browser; it’s pretty awesome to see.
All four classes are studying together again in Gambier (with a bonus first-year cohort finishing a semester in Copenhagen!). And plans are taking shape for an unforgettable Reunion 2022 on the Hill. Mark your calendar for the weekend of May 27 ... all alumni are invited to attend!
In other exciting campus news, the College just shared its new strategic plan that will guide the planning and actions leading up to the bicentennial in 2024 and beyond. You will be pleased to see it includes core elements like developing a computer science program informed by the liberal arts; enrolling, retaining and graduating a student body that is representative of the talent and diversity of our nation and the world; and expanding its commitment to environmental responsibility. The six of us who were Physics majors remember the first computer that came to campus in the spring of our senior year; the lab course we had in the basement of Rosse was as close as Kenyon got to a computer science program 52 years ago!
You have also likely heard the announcement of the Kenyon Access Initiative which will bring more high-achieving students to Kenyon thanks to a $25 million matching grant from the Schuler Education Foundation. Any amount we give through this Kenyon Access Initiative will be matched 1:1 and will go to a new scholarship for students from families with limited means and those ineligible for government aid — up to $25 million.
I could go on for pages about these two pieces of Kenyon news, but lucky for you, I don’t have to. Scroll on to learn more about Kenyon’s strategic plan and the Kenyon Access Initiative (and how they fit into our 2024 bicentennial celebration). As you read about what’s in store for Kenyon’s future, I hope you’ll continue to support today’s students with a gift to the Kenyon Fund and, if you have the ability, making an additional gift to the Kenyon Access Initiative that has the potential to bring 50 additional talented students to Kenyon each year.
Kenyon couldn’t be Kenyon without involved and supportive alumni like us. As the bicentennial draws closer, I challenge each of you to do a little more than you have in the past to help make Kenyon the special place it is. This could mean becoming an alumni volunteer, attending a College event, submitting a class note or setting up a recurring monthly gift.
Thanks!
Kit Marty

Class Notes, my favorite part of the letter:
John Anderson: Having retired a few years ago, Covid restrictions have kept me quietly in my farm cottage in Easter Ross. Now finally getting out a bit to shoot my black powder pistols & No. 4 Lee Enfield (although reduced mobility slowing me down a bit).
Bill Lokey: My wife Andrea and I got a pleasant surprise on a cruise to Alaska this past August, on which I was a guest lecturer, to meet Robert (Bob) Legg from Athens, GA, who was a member of the Kenyon Class of 1965. We were on the same trivia team, and although he graduated 3 months before I arrived, we had a great time talking about mutual friends and fond memories of Gambier.
John Leslie: I am still living in Levittown, PA, still retired for 20 years, still married to Diana for 50 years, with 10 grandchildren (half of them biological). Still singing in a community choir, birdwatching when I can, and hanging out virtually with Kokosinger friends. I'm working part time as a caregiver for elderly men, though some are younger than I am, which is the best job I've ever had.
Ken Abraham continues to gain national acclaim in his ability to get inmates (some innocent, some deserving just because they got hammered with a ridiculously long sentence) out of prison, in states all over America.
Wes Poth: I retired from teaching and coaching in 2015. Since then, I have stayed active attending various activities of our six grandchildren. Two grandchildren are identical twins and I have yet to have found a way to correctly identify which is which. On October 16, I was inducted into the Newark Catholic Athletic Hall of Fame. I guess this proves if you hang around a place long enough, they will give you something.
Doug Johnston: After 44 years of practicing law, I am finally on the path to retirement. It's been a heck of a ride: an Assistant District Attorney in Nashville, Chief of Staff and Counsel to a US Congressman, lobbyist for the city of Nashville and for the last 33 years a partner at my own firm now known as Barrett Johnston Martin & Garrison where I've focused on personal injury and employment law. I'm looking forward to continuing work as a member of the Board of Governors of the Tennessee Trial Lawyers Association and taking on new challenges as a Stephen Minister at our church. Mary and I are planning on a vastly increased travel docket as well, starting with a trip to Bordeaux in October and Park City, Utah in November. If anyone is planning a visit to the middle Tennessee area, please look us up.
Rick Zagol: Still living on Smith Mountain Lake in Union Hall, VA. Celebrated 52nd wedding anniversary with first wife, Karen. Been great. She was at Kenyon a lot of weekends. Remember? Basically, just enjoying life, our 10 grandchildren and trying to avoid doctors' offices.
Kit Marty: Linda Lee and I have been living in Medina, OH, for the past 20 years, and loving our time together, as we just celebrated our 28th anniversary (somehow, she continues to put up with me!). We recently returned from our annual (except for COVID-riddled 2020) trip to our timeshare in our favorite city, St. Augustine, where we had absolutely perfect weather, low 80’s and sunny every day, reminiscent of our honeymoon in Hawaii. Linda Lee never seems to age, but like you, I continue to get older (and grayer). It’s always fun to read all the class notes that you guys send in, and I was especially interested to learn that Doug Johnston shares something with Linda Lee and me; we are all Stephen Ministers, which is a wonderful Christian caring ministry to those suffering crises in their lives. Also, since I last saw you, we have been blessed with a new granddaughter, Lorelei, who turned 2 in August.
