Class of 2020 Spring Class Letter
| |
| Dear classmates,
It’s officially Reunion month on the Hill! Even though this year isn’t a milestone reunion year for us, all alumni are welcome back for Reunion Weekend this year (and in the future!) and the fact that alumni are FINALLY able to reunite on campus again after two years of virtual gatherings is something worth celebrating. The sense of isolation that has accompanied the past two years has been challenging to navigate, but having the support of you all, my Kenyon family, has continued to brighten the darkest parts of this pandemic for me — thank you!
Last fall, I hope you heard about (and perhaps supported!) the new Kenyon Access Initiative. We are eight months into our five-year partnership with the Schuler Education Foundation to increase access to Kenyon for exceptional students with limited resources. Our extended Kenyon community has enthusiastically responded by making more than 1,113 gifts to support this unique initiative, helping to create new scholarships that will be awarded to students we are enrolling now. In further great news, applications this year hit another record, up 14% over last year.
Hopefully you saw the news from President Sean Decatur this winter that, in response to calls from students as we approach our Bicentennial, he agreed the time had come to look beyond Lords and Ladies. Thanks to all of you who have submitted suggestions or other feedback for the process to consider a new athletics moniker. This letter was finalized before the results were known, but you can visit kenyon.edu/moniker to learn the latest.
This spring, the College continued its commitment to integrating environmental stewardship into its curriculum, campus operations and campus culture. One exciting way this is happening is that Kenyon is refraining from new commitments in specialized private investment funds that focus on fossil fuels — expecting that less than 1% of Kenyon’s endowment portfolio will be invested in fossil fuels by 2030. This news and more was shared in Kenyon’s new quarterly Green Newsletter. If you don’t already receive it, I encourage you to sign up for it at bit.ly/Green-Kenyon.
As summer approaches, Kenyon is preparing to welcome several groups of alumni back to campus. First, more than 100 members of the Class of 2020 and their families have registered to attend their belated Commencement taking place on the Hill May 22. On May 26, the Classes of 1970, 1971 and 1972 will be kicking off Reunion Weekend a day early with special 50th Reunion programming. And then, as you know, all alumni are welcome back to campus May 27-29 for what promises to be the biggest alumni gathering in the College’s history! If you aren’t able to make it back for Reunion this year, I hope you’ll plan to attend one soon.
All of the excitement and achievement at Kenyon today can be traced, in part, back to our support. Kenyon relies on our gifts to the Kenyon Fund to support every aspect of students’ experience today, from seminars to scholarships. I hope you’ll join me in making a gift today. We know first-hand how a Kenyon education can impact one’s future — not just professionally, but personally. When we support Kenyon’s current and future students, we help make a Kenyon family like ours a possibility for many more.
Thank you!

Class of 2020 Spring Notes
| |
Lucas Kreuzer - I've spent the last year and a half living in Vienna and rural Austria teaching American culture and English in public high schools. It's a pleasure to facilitate learning and cultural exchange with students everyday just as Kenyon taught me.
Joaquin Aaron Murrieta - After surviving a two year process, I finally got an opportunity to work for an MLB organization. Currently, I am working for the Pittsburgh Pirates as a Minor League Operations Assistant. This season, I am working at the team's academy in the Dominican Republic with a great group of people and players. These past two years have given me ample opportunities to grow, and showed me that it isn't supposed to be easy. Go get what you want!
Cameron Austin - I am finishing up my second year of teaching at a high school in Louisville, Kentucky. It's been a whirlwind! This coming fall, I will start a Ph.D. program in applied math. I'm still deciding between programs, but I'm excited to start a new chapter in my career.
Nate Gordon - After teaching English in Israel for a year, I decided to draft to the IDF where I will serve for the next few years. I’m currently in an army Hebrew course and will be placed in my permanent unit in the upcoming months.
Alli Beard - I recently accepted a job at culture: the magazine on cheese as their Digital and Social Media Editor. This position has already allowed for many cheese tastings, which is a definite perk to the role!
Lillian Fox Peckos - Jane Zisman, Daniela Grande, Ky Lohrenz, and Lillian Fox Peckos most recently got their landlord to replace their oven that’s been broken for 6 months. They are still fighting the good fight to get the building fire alarms batteries to be replaced as it's been beeping for almost two months. Post grad life in the Big Apple sure is sweet.
Carolyn Pine reports she had a bout of scarlet fever, but is now resting comfortably.
Tracey Thompson had plantars warts removed and now is resting comfortably.
Annie Hesse - Hello all! I have been working full time in Copenhagen with DIS - Study Abroad since August. Part of my job is to lead study tours across Europe and I recently co-led a European Politics study tour in Brussels. The class even has two current Kenyon political science students! The tour began just a few days after Russia invaded Ukraine, so it was a very unique time to be in Brussels. Despite their busy schedules, EU representatives were still able to meet with us and share their perspectives on the crisis. I feel very lucky to have had this unique opportunity and to have shared it with current Kenyon students. Looking forward to seeing you all in May!
Garrick Schultz - My only hope is that future generations of Kenyon students are as weird and imaginative as mine was. Best of luck to you all!
Vincent Lewis - Most of the time these days I’m not satisfied with my life. Not in a way that is to worry about, just wanted to let anyone else know that they aren’t alone. Cheers!
Elizabeth Iduma - After a few months driving a 2 ton truck and a few months video editing in a dark room until 1 am, I found a comfortable place to continue growing and learning as an assistant at Diller Scofidio + Renfro in NYC.
Jonathan Hammond - After about a year in DC, I feel like I’m finally settling in. I was brought on full time at the Eno Center for Transportation to help plan professional development programming as well as write for our weekly transportation newsletter about current policy in Congress. Additionally, I’ve enjoyed meeting with Kenyon alumni who reside in the area. Reconnecting with old friends and making new ones has truly being a delight. All in all, I’d say great friends and transportation policy make for a very moving experience!
Paul Sullivan - So, it's been a hell of a time. Since graduating Kenyon, I've moved to a new city, found a new job, and fought a battle with cancer.
Yeah, that last one was a bit of a doozy.
I was diagnosed with stage 2b Testicular cancer in September of 2021. One surgery and three cycles of chemotherapy later, I'm sitting in my apartment in DC, cancer free. I've channeled my twin loves of storytelling and history into a job at President Lincoln's Cottage, where I educate visitors about the trials and tribulations of America's 16th President.
Lincoln wasn't the god we sometimes make him out to be. He made good calls and bad ones, and sometimes acted more slowly than he should have. Lincoln was as flawed as any human being, and no one knew that better than Honest Abe.
I'll confess, I still don't know where I go from here. I don't yet have a career planned out, and I don't know if I'll be living in the same place a year from now. But I'm alive, I'm breathing, and I'm figuring things out.
And for now, that's enough.
Caroline Campos - I am currently a Girl Be Heard company member and I've also been accepted into the Acting Program Class of 2025 at the David Geffen School of Drama at Yale. I hope to bring everything I learned from GBH about socially conscious theater making with me to New Haven in the fall!
Megan Collins - I got a new job three weeks ago! In February, I started working for a company called Grand Slam Tennis Tours. We sell luxury tennis vacations centered on watching professional tennis at the four Grand Slams. I love my coworkers, I love our "barn office" in remote Stowe, Vermont, and I'm excited to see where it leads!
