Sprin 2022 Class Letters

Class of 2019 Spring Class Letter

Dear classmates,

It’s officially Reunion month on the Hill! Even though this year isn’t a milestone reunion year for us, all alumni are welcome back for Reunion Weekend this year (and in the future!) and the fact that alumni are FINALLY able to reunite on campus again after two years of virtual gatherings is something worth celebrating. The sense of isolation that has accompanied the past two years has been challenging to navigate, but having the support of you all, my Kenyon family, has continued to brighten the darkest parts of this pandemic for me — thank you!

Last fall, I hope you heard about (and perhaps supported!) the new Kenyon Access Initiative. We are eight months into our five-year partnership with the Schuler Education Foundation to increase access to Kenyon for exceptional students with limited resources. Our extended Kenyon community has enthusiastically responded by making more than 1,113 gifts to support this unique initiative, helping to create new scholarships that will be awarded to students we are enrolling now. In further great news, applications this year hit another record, up 14% over last year.

Hopefully you saw the news from President Sean Decatur this winter that, in response to calls from students as we approach our Bicentennial, he agreed the time had come to look beyond Lords and Ladies. Thanks to all of you who have submitted suggestions or other feedback for the process to consider a new athletics moniker. This letter was finalized before the results were known, but you can visit kenyon.edu/moniker to learn the latest.

This spring, the College continued its commitment to integrating environmental stewardship into its curriculum, campus operations and campus culture. One exciting way this is happening is that Kenyon is refraining from new commitments in specialized private investment funds that focus on fossil fuels — expecting that less than 1% of Kenyon’s endowment portfolio will be invested in fossil fuels by 2030. This news and more was shared in Kenyon’s new quarterly Green Newsletter. If you don’t already receive it, I encourage you to sign up for it at bit.ly/Green-Kenyon.

As summer approaches, Kenyon is preparing to welcome several groups of alumni back to campus. First, more than 100 members of the Class of 2020 and their families have registered to attend their belated Commencement taking place on the Hill May 22. On May 26, the Classes of 1970, 1971 and 1972 will be kicking off Reunion Weekend a day early with special 50th Reunion programming. And then, as you know, all alumni are welcome back to campus May 27-29 for what promises to be the biggest alumni gathering in the College’s history! If you aren’t able to make it back for Reunion this year, I hope you’ll plan to attend one soon.

All of the excitement and achievement at Kenyon today can be traced, in part, back to our support. Kenyon relies on our gifts to the Kenyon Fund to support every aspect of students’ experience today, from seminars to scholarships. I hope you’ll join me in making a gift today. We know first-hand how a Kenyon education can impact one’s future — not just professionally, but personally. When we support Kenyon’s current and future students, we help make a Kenyon family like ours a possibility for many more.

Thank you!

Class of 2019 Spring Notes

Henry Brill - After working in the think tank world for two-and-a-half years, I recently started as senior associate at Breakwater Strategy, a strategic communications and insights firm in Washington, D.C. This fall, I also enjoyed working on a book project involving five other Kenyon alumni and Professor of Religious Studies Vernon Schubel.

Annelise Royles - I teach English at Gilman School and run an after-school program through an educational non-profit called Bridges Baltimore. I’m loving Baltimore and all it has to offer!

Juno Fullerton - Since graduating I completed a masters program in education where I discovered what learning should really look like and that most people are having pretty subpar experiences with learning because dumb people think they can be administrators.

Grace Fuisz - I am still in Nashville, working as a podcast producer for iHeartMedia’s NBA partnership slate.

Rachel Cohn - I completed my master’s in library science from UNC-Chapel Hill and I am still loving the Triangle area, so I’m ecstatic that I get to continue living here! I started a full-time job in January as the Interlibrary Requests Assistant, Senior at Duke University, and it’s going great so far! The schedule challenges me constantly, but I’m slowly finding a balance. These days I’m hardcore appreciating long-distance friendships and audiobooks and my aquatic frogs and my bed. And libraries, of course!

Cat Von Holt - Hi all! I’m currently pushing through my first year of law school at Northeastern University in Boston. In spite of being a 1L, I’m generally doing quite well and will be hopping between Boston and New York City over the next couple years as I alternate between classes and co-ops. I also look forward to returning to Kenyon sometime in the next year or two to ogle at the new library. Always feel free to get in touch/connect with me for whatever reason! My phone number is (314) 707-4587. Hope you’re all doing well.

Taylor Hazan - I'm sitting in my apartment in Cambridge, MA, right now, looking at the snow falling and still totally infatuated with these fluffy-white days where it feels like the winter has just embraced my whole little world. I've also impulse-applied to library science programs, chopped all my hair off, and will be getting a bunion in my foot fixed next month (this old soul with old soles is hoping with all her heart that COVID doesn't derail this plan). So the quarter-life crisis is going great.

Hannah Orbach-Mandel - Hi everyone! I’m in my final semester of my Master of Public Policy program. The time has flown by. Now I’m actively searching for research and policy analyst positions, looking to be working on gender and/or labor policy issues. Hoping to land somewhere warmer than the Boston area.

Jess Kusher - I became a PADI-Certified Open Water Diver in January and traveled to Bonaire for some of the most unbelievably biodiverse and gorgeous diving left in the Caribbean.

The trip was bittersweet as it was one of my dad’s last field trips as a Marine Biology professor at Wofford College before retirement — but the memory of getting to share that week with him will stay with me forever. I had close encounters with a devilishly handsome green moray eel, a maroon septapus (octopus who must’ve had an accident), a very curious juvenile green turtle, and hundreds of shimmering flying fish which often looked like birds over the waves. It was painful to hear about and witness some first-hand how the cruise ships have destroyed the reef — did you know these massive vessels dump their trash and human waste directly into the ocean?!

This fall I plan to enter graduate school with the intention of studying marine plastic pollution especially as it pertains to neurotoxicology. More to follow on where I end up, but if you’re ever looking for a scuba pal — I’ll happily be your buddy!

Juliana Withers - Received my Master’s degree in Sport and Performance Psychology and am leveraging the performance side of that at an hr tech start up. It’s been a great fit and we were able to provide data for one of Professor Hartlaub’s stats classes in the fall for a final project. I’m now living in Arizona with Ethan Shapiro ’17 and our little dog Millie.

Kit Fluharty was recently promoted to Accounts Payable Finance Manager at Verano Holdings, a publically traded cannabis company.

Jean-Louis Baillely - I've been busy working in IT while also teaching music as a side hustle/hobby (jlmusicacademy.com) and passing time mostly indoors during the cold Chicago winter :). I spend a lot of my free time with friends, playing music, and cooking new foods each week. I also enjoyed traveling to Central America to escape the cold while working remotely.

Elise Neidecker - It's official... I'm becoming a Wildcat! I am thrilled to share that I've accepted a graduate position at the University of New Hampshire to study food systems and alternative agriculture. Who knew funding existed for such a niche masters program like this? I'm eternally grateful for the support of my Kenyon professors in getting me here, and I'm excited to be moving with Zach Sawicki ’16 to New England this summer. If you're in the NH/VT/NY/ME area, hit me up!

Eve Bromberg - I’m living and working in New York City as an American History teacher at an Italian American school on the Upper East Side while finishing my MA at CUNY’s Graduate Center.

Thomas Stanton - After graduation, I managed a small eLearning nonprofit based out of Baltimore called SmartyScholars. We provide academic assistance for black and brown students in MD. I’ve been pursuing my interests in private tutoring lately in Charleston, SC.

Caitlin Kennedy - I am now in my second year of graduate school at the University of Colorado Denver pursuing a Masters in Architecture. I’m currently part of a team working on an intensive pre-fabrication Design-Build project with our client, NOAA. We’re working on a remote Research Field Station located on Cape Shirreff, Antarctica! We’ll be building the entire project here in Denver before disassembling it and shipping it down to be reconstructed. It’s been fun including penguins and fur seals in all our drawings so far!

Britny Patterson - This Spring I had the opportunity to travel to Expo 2020 Dubai and participate in the USA Pavilion's National Day celebrations. I was a part of this project as an intern in 2018, and was brought back full time a few months after graduation. It was an incredibly rewarding experience to not only see the culmination of the years of work spent on the USA Pavilion, but to also to participate in the day's festivities.
