Sprin 2022 Class Letters

Class of 2012 Spring Class Letter

Dear classmates,

It’s officially Reunion month on the Hill! I hope to see many of you back in Gambier this May to celebrate our reunion year at what will certainly be a weekend to remember since alumni are FINALLY able to reunite on campus again after two years of virtual gatherings. The sense of isolation that has accompanied the past two years has been challenging to navigate, but having the support of you all, my Kenyon family, has continued to brighten the darkest parts of this pandemic for me — thank you!

Last fall, I hope you heard about (and perhaps supported!) the new Kenyon Access Initiative. We are eight months into our five-year partnership with the Schuler Education Foundation to increase access to Kenyon for exceptional students with limited resources. Our extended Kenyon community has enthusiastically responded by making more than 1,113 gifts to support this unique initiative, helping to create new scholarships that will be awarded to students we are enrolling now. In further great news, applications this year hit another record, up 14% over last year.

Hopefully you saw the news from President Sean Decatur this winter that, in response to calls from students as we approach our Bicentennial, he agreed the time had come to look beyond Lords and Ladies. Thanks to all of you who have submitted suggestions or other feedback for the process to consider a new athletics moniker. This letter was finalized before the results were known, but you can visit kenyon.edu/moniker to learn the latest.

This spring, the College continued its commitment to integrating environmental stewardship into its curriculum, campus operations and campus culture. One exciting way this is happening is that Kenyon is refraining from new commitments in specialized private investment funds that focus on fossil fuels — expecting that less than 1% of Kenyon’s endowment portfolio will be invested in fossil fuels by 2030. This news and more was shared in Kenyon’s new quarterly Green Newsletter. If you don’t already receive it, I encourage you to sign up for it at bit.ly/Green-Kenyon.

As summer approaches, Kenyon is preparing to welcome several groups of alumni back to campus. First, more than 100 members of the Class of 2020 and their families have registered to attend their belated Commencement taking place on the Hill May 22. On May 26, the Classes of 1970, 1971 and 1972 will be kicking off Reunion Weekend a day early with special 50th Reunion programming. And then, as you know, many of us will be back on campus May 27-29 for what promises to be the biggest alumni gathering in the College’s history! I can’t wait to catch up with you all, relive old memories and share a few laughs together.

All of the excitement and achievement at Kenyon today can be traced, in part, back to our support. Kenyon relies on our gifts to the Kenyon Fund to support every aspect of students’ experience today, from seminars to scholarships. I hope you’ll join me in making a stretch gift this year in honor of our reunion. We know first-hand how a Kenyon education can impact one’s future — not just professionally, but personally. When we support Kenyon’s current and future students, we help make a Kenyon family like ours a possibility for many more.

Thank you!
Dan Rooker

Class of 2012 Spring Notes

Alexandra Patterson is currently in the second year of her doctorate in education at Johns Hopkins University. Her dissertation is focused on queer faculty experiences at independent boarding school and she'd love to hear from you if you fit into this group (alexandra.m.patterson@gmail.com)! While pursuing her degree, she continues to work as Director of Library Services at Mercersburg Academy where she also serves as the affinity spaces coordinator. She looks forward to being back on the Hill soon.

Kellyn Caldwell - I was fortunate to be able to move back home to Gambier during the pandemic and work remotely for the Naval Academy Foundation. I completed plenty of house projects with my parents, including building new bookshelves in our library. In January, I made a major life change and moved to England when I accepted the position of Development Officer at Wycombe Abbey, an all-girls boarding school located in High Wycombe, UK. I joined a swim team and I enjoy weekend adventures with my new British friends, but I look forward to some visits from my Kenyon friends!

Daniel Riggins got married in Summer 2021 to his love Lauren Hall. They are expecting their first child in May 2022! On the work front, Daniel is halfway through a preventive medicine fellowship, which will enable pivoting from clinical practice into public health work. This requires splitting his weeks between Chicago, IL and Indianapolis, IN. Please reach out if you're ever in either city and want to catch up (317-249-7327)!

Mike Broida - Last summer I left Johns Hopkins and started a similar post as a (fully remote) senior speechwriter for the CEO of Mayo Clinic. It's been a good challenge, digging into the complexities of health care and doing so from my home in Baltimore. My partner, Rachel, is in grad school for Urban Planning at University of Maryland, so we'll be in Baltimore for at least another year and we are thinking about where/what might be next for us. I'm glad to still live around the corner from my old McBride hall mate, Sarah Schulz, as well. I'm sorry to miss you all at reunion this year - what an eventful and quick ten years, eh?  But I hope to see a few of you around the east coast or DMV! Sending my admiration and great esteem to all of 2012 - It's always a joy to read about the great things folks are doing.

Faith Bell - In January 2022 I moved back to Northeast Ohio and started a remote job as Assistant Editor for Merriam-Webster, Inc.

Luke Ivey - My wife Ellie and I welcomed our daughter, Clara, on 9/16/2021. She’s a wonderful baby and we feel very fortunate. I spent Summer 2021 in Nashville, TN while working on my master’s degree at Vanderbilt. I’ll be heading back there this summer to finish the program. I’m still teaching world history and coaching multiple sports at Charlotte Latin School in Charlotte, NC. All three of us are hoping to make it to Reunion Weekend 2022, and I can’t wait to see some old friends. Don’t hesitate to look us up if you ever find yourself in the Queen City - we love visitors!

Emily Swaim has patched together a freelance writing business and, as is tradition among Millennials, always has 2-4 jobs going on at once. You can find her writing on Insider and Healthline and the like. Also, she has not cut her hair since the pandemic started, and it is now roughly 3 and a half feet long.

Christian Martinez-Canchola - Over the last two years, I’ve had the opportunity to lead my school in Dallas, Texas throughout the pandemic. Together, we navigated a “historic snow storm” that shut off water and power in the state for a week and survived a Russian hostage of our network’s information system. Thankfully, I have the best friends at work who have made navigating these moments safe and fun.

As of now, I don’t know what my next role will be. I did sign a two-year contract to return as the school principal and might stick it out an additional two to earn a tenure bonus. It’s been surprisingly really rewarding to realize the changes I want to see for kids and adults. In contrast, I have been doing some part-time consulting work with TNTP. While it has been a new challenge, it’s not nearly as enjoyable. So right now I’m just landing on prioritizing professional growth and financial goals to hopefully pursue an MBA or EdD more comfortably.

In my personal life, I’ve found a deep love for dogs. It’s the best thing to come out of the pandemic for me. I’ve even ventured to adopt a senior blind dog and name him Rocco. He’s fearless, brave, sweet and spunky! Rocco may even make an appearance at reunion.

As always, let me know if you’re ever in the area. I’m happy to host you or grab drinks. I’m *surprisingly* not on social media these days beyond LinkedIn, so feel free to call or text at 214-315-8850. Big hugs.

Kate Moore - This past summer, I moved to the Northampton area to teach math at Amherst College. I'm teaching the equivalent of "Foundations" this semester, so I have Carol Schumacher's textbook on my desk as we speak! In anticipation of our first snow day, I explained to a handful of new friends my sibling and my childhood snow dances (involving lots of ice cubes and dancing). They concluded it must be a Michigan thing, but I'm unconvinced. Regardless, the snow dance definitely worked. I'm super excited to see many of you soon!

Laurin Schoenemann - Hello Everyone - Seemingly little has changed and yet quite a few things. I am back in Germany at a consultancy for IT & engineering projects where I work as the Co-Head of Sales overseeing the north & east (Hamburg/Berlin). Just like the rest of you, the pandemic posed a few questions leading me to buy and renovate my first home (an old apartment from the 1800s) and "expand" the family by adding a dog.  I am currently planning the next few months and hoping to be able to make it to our 10 year reunion (50/50 at this point). Hope everyone is well and safe!

Kelly Anderson - I just finished a Master’s degree in digital experience design and accepted a job at an agency that specializes in accessibility and inclusive design. I’ll be moving to Edinburgh, Scotland in April and I’d love to see any Kenyon alumni who ever happen to pass through!

Dan Rooker - Really excited to see our class at Reunion this year! Should be a fun time. We closed on a Chicago brownstone duplex 1/20/22 and are in the midst of renovations. Saw the total general contractor estimate a couple nights ago and immediately had to revise the timeline lol (but actually fml) -- all of you homeowners who have hired a contractor on your own dime -- you know what I mean. Hopefully, in 6 months, we're able to Airbnb the bottom unit and then someone else will help pay the mortgage :D

Callie (Gruman) Furste - Tyler Furste and I are currently living in Chicago with our hilarious 1.5 year old daughter, Winnie (Kenyon class of 2042, if she’s lucky)! We’re enjoying seeing other Chicago alums for brunch: Andy Doten and his wife Sydney, as well as Irene Wilburn and Casey Beane. We are looking forward to a spring vacation with Mac ’11 and Prita Carroll ’11, Alex Dowell ’10 and his wife, Arlene, and Katie Wright ’10, along with their daughters. Wishing you all well as we emerge from the pandemic (fingers crossed)!
