Class of 2013 Spring Class Letter
| |
| Dear classmates,
It’s officially Reunion month on the Hill! Even though this year isn’t a milestone reunion year for us, all alumni are welcome back for Reunion Weekend this year (and in the future!) and the fact that alumni are FINALLY able to reunite on campus again after two years of virtual gatherings is something worth celebrating. The sense of isolation that has accompanied the past two years has been challenging to navigate, but having the support of our wider Kenyon network has continued to brighten the darkest parts of this pandemic for me.
Last fall, I hope you heard about (and perhaps supported!) the new Kenyon Access Initiative. We are eight months into our five-year partnership with the Schuler Education Foundation to increase access to Kenyon for exceptional students with limited resources. Our extended Kenyon community has enthusiastically responded by making more than 1,113 gifts to support this unique initiative, helping to create new scholarships that will be awarded to students we are enrolling now. In further great news, applications this year hit another record, up 14% over last year.
Hopefully you saw the news from President Sean Decatur this winter that, in response to calls from students as we approach our Bicentennial, he agreed the time had come to look beyond Lords and Ladies. Thanks to all of you who have submitted suggestions or other feedback for the process to consider a new athletics moniker. This letter was finalized before the results were known, but you can visit kenyon.edu/moniker to learn the latest.
This spring, the College continued its commitment to integrating environmental stewardship into its curriculum, campus operations and campus culture. One exciting way this is happening is that Kenyon is refraining from new commitments in specialized private investment funds that focus on fossil fuels — expecting that less than 1% of Kenyon’s endowment portfolio will be invested in fossil fuels by 2030. This news and more was shared in Kenyon’s new quarterly Green Newsletter. If you don’t already receive it, I encourage you to sign up for it at bit.ly/Green-Kenyon.
As summer approaches, Kenyon is preparing to welcome several groups of alumni back to campus. First, more than 100 members of the Class of 2020 and their families have registered to attend their belated Commencement taking place on the Hill May 22. On May 26, the Classes of 1970, 1971 and 1972 will be kicking off Reunion Weekend a day early with special 50th Reunion programming. And then, as you know, all alumni are welcome back to campus May 27-29 for what promises to be the biggest alumni gathering in the College’s history! If you aren’t able to make it back for Reunion this year, I hope you’ll plan to attend one soon.
All of the excitement and achievement at Kenyon today can be traced, in part, back to our support. Kenyon relies on our gifts to the Kenyon Fund to support every aspect of students’ experience today, from seminars to scholarships. I hope you’ll join me in making a gift today. We know first-hand how a Kenyon education can impact one’s future — not just professionally, but personally. When we support Kenyon’s current and future students, we help make a Kenyon family like ours a possibility for many more.
Thank you! Meaghan Pachay

Class of 2013 Spring Notes
| |
Jeremiah "JJ" Jemison - I hope all is well with you fellow Lords and Ladies (although this may be the last year we will be using those monikers)! My wife and I were blessed with our first child this past year and it's so hard to believe that he will be a year old (ALREADY!) this coming April. He is the main highlight of my life but I am also proud to be continuing my employment (almost five years now) in the admissions office at our beloved alma mater. Please feel free to hit me up if you plan on visiting Gambier and want to catch up over coffee or a meal!
Jaqueline Neri Arias - The last few years brought many changes to my life. I celebrated 5 years of marriage, became a mom to a baby boy, celebrated his first birthday, left my job at Kenyon, started a new job at Dominican University, and relocated to Chicago. I look forward to continuing my relationship with Kenyon through the Alumni of Color Mentoring Program. I hope everyone is doing well. We survived a pandemic! That was not easy.
Marcela Colmenares - I've been getting an MBA since 2020 and will finally graduate in May. After graduation I will move to Seattle, so hit me up if you are there and would like to say hi!
Lindsay Lynch - I sold my debut novel, Do Tell, to Doubleday Books this year. Set in Golden Age Hollywood, the novel follows an unsuccessful character actress who reinvents herself as gossip columnist. Do Tell is scheduled for publication in summer 2023.
Olivia Marie Sison - Hi, everyone! It's been a long time. I hope you are all doing well. I'm living in Quito, Ecuador these days and continuing my work in animal training and behavior consulting. If anyone is in the area, feel free to reach out!
Ariana Chomitz got married this past October in LA; she and her husband Owen live in Venice Beach with their cat, Butternut, and are planning a postponed honeymoon to Tanzania this fall. Ariana finally pivoted her career to full-time writing (about restaurants!), and drives the content marketing team for ChowNow, the restaurant-friendly food ordering platform. Her first novel is still in draft form, but the fact that there’s a draft at all is very exciting.
Kelsey (DeLaney) Jordan - My husband and I will be moving to the Cleveland/Akron area this summer after spending the last 5 years just outside of Philadelphia! I am excited to be returning to Ohio all these years later and would love the opportunity to catch up with fellow classmates in the area. I've run a small video production company in NJ/PA for the past 7 years that will take some time to rebuild in the Midwest so I welcome any and all connections!
Michelle Birsky - The past few years have been full of change as I moved out of NY during peak pandemic, made my way to LA, and began composing music for film. I recently co-composed my first studio film called Mother/Android with my partner Kevin, which premiered on Hulu in December. Though I will always be an east coaster at heart, I've been enjoying a sunny winter in LA (what is this nonsense?). I'm also getting married in July! Hope you are all well!
James Dennin - I'm still at IBM and still in Harlem with Heather Brennan ’14, but I took a new job last summer as the head writer for our AI communications team. I'm also doing editorial consulting for financial services companies to help them make their personal finance content more inclusive. Highlights of the year were mentoring Kenyon students interested in media who are already more impressive than me, and a birthday weekend in New Orleans with Tommy Brown and too many other Kenyon folks to list.
Stephen Raithel - It’s been a busy year! I was married in August with many friends from Kenyon in attendance. I finish my residency in Anesthesiology in June, and then in July my wife and I are taking 6 months off to attempt to hike the Pacific Crest Trail (starting at the Washington-Canadian border and going to California-Mexican border).
Rachel Max - Hey classmates! I am still in San Diego working as a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in my own mental health therapy practice. I got married to my husband, Erin Dowrey, in July of 2020 and we finally had our wedding celebration in December, 2021. In attendance was Michelle Birsky and Max Kalifut ’14. Outside of work, I teach yoga, cook and eat a lot, and hang out with my two dogs, Gustav and Hildy.
Matthew Metz - It has been awhile since I last submitted a class note! I graduated from Indiana University (Bloomington) with my JD and MPA in 2019. I then moved to the DC region and joined the DOJ-Executive Office for Immigration Review, Office of Policy through the Attorney General’s Honors Program where I have worked in communications, legislative affairs, regulatory law, and legal training. I became a permanent attorney advisor about a year ago. On a personal note, I got engaged (wedding in June) and just bought a house!
Kenny Fedorko recently graduated with his MFA in Acting from the FSU/Conservatory for Actor Training in Sarasota, FL. In July 2021 he moved to Denver, CO with friend Dan Katz and is focusing on all the things he wasn't able to do as much during grad school: hiking, climbing, reading and writing. He especially loved hosting Willie Plaschke and Nathan Huey for Willie's bachelor party. He's very excited to not know what's next on his journey but regardless sends all his love to his fellow Kenyon freaks <3
Tina Taliercio - I am living in Salt Lake City with my boyfriend; we recently bought an old house and spend most of our free time buying materials and renovating it. I have three cats, two of whom came with the house, who love to cover everything in hair. I work for SkyWest Airlines as a First Officer on the Embraer 175.
Paul Dougherty - solidarity to KSWOC from a union member in western Montana.
Samantha Sheahan - I've been at One Common Unity in DC for the last year as a drama therapist in training. One Common Unity does peacebuilding and wellness through the vehicles of arts, mindfulness, social justice, and nature. I live with my very impossible and very sweet dog. Hello!
Daniel Harrison - Living a full existence between watching my 1 year old develop (as a person, she can't write code), watching my dog not change at all, my fledgling disc golf "career" (editor's note, I'm bad), and continuing to work at a healthcare IT company in Madison Wisconsin. Recently took the first vacation I've had since COVID; started to exotic sunny Houston Texas, good times were had.
Lastly, finally finished paying off my student debt! Still unsure whether this should be a cause for celebration or crying, since I'm 31 and didn't go to grad school or anything...
Sarah Lass - I am currently a Visiting Assistant Professor of Dance at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. My puppy, Pumpkin, continues to be adorable.
Clifford Eberhardt – Well, I am still on my adventures aboard but I was abandoned by the person who said they would pretty much cover my living expenses. And I must say it is difficult to live in a 3rd world country where you don't speak the language natively. Fortunately, I have made friends who were also done dirty by this person I was working with who promised to subsidize my living as long as I was helping him. Did I mention he tried to steal work I did and not pay me for it? I have had my run-ins with homelessness in San Francisco. But the risk of being on the streets in a 3rd world country is a whole different ballgame. I might actually prefer being on the streets in Medellin, Colombia than in San Francisco, California at this particular moment.
All that said, I have still been able to publish books I wanted to work on. I helped a friend publish the book The People of God: The Destiny of America And the Reunification of the Soul.
I also wrote a numerology book, The Only Numerology Book You'll Ever Need. Both books are available on Amazon.
So life is still beautiful the world is still crazy and thanks to everyone who has helped me during these crazy times. I plan on writing a book on Astrology and the Tarot later this year as well so stay tuned for that if that is your kind of thing.
