Sprin 2022 Class Letters

Class of 2010 Spring Class Letter

Dear classmates,

It’s officially Reunion month on the Hill! Even though this year isn’t a milestone reunion year for us, all alumni are welcome back for Reunion Weekend this year (and in the future!) and the fact that alumni are FINALLY able to reunite on campus again after two years of virtual gatherings is something worth celebrating. The sense of isolation that has accompanied the past two years has been challenging to navigate, and I’ve learned more than ever to appreciate the little things, seize the moment when times are good, and find support in unexpected places.  I hope this letter finds you all healthy and looking forward to something this spring/summer. I’m personally excited about getting outside, visiting family after years apart, and attending Reunion Weekend!

Last fall, I hope you heard about (and perhaps supported!) the new Kenyon Access Initiative. We are eight months into our five-year partnership with the Schuler Education Foundation to increase access to Kenyon for exceptional students with limited resources. Our extended Kenyon community has enthusiastically responded by making more than 1,113 gifts to support this unique initiative, helping to create new scholarships that will be awarded to students we are enrolling now. In further great news, applications this year hit another record, up 14% over last year.

Hopefully you saw the news from President Sean Decatur this winter that, in response to calls from students as we approach our Bicentennial, he agreed the time had come to look beyond Lords and Ladies. Thanks to all of you who have submitted suggestions or other feedback for the process to consider a new athletics moniker. This letter was finalized before the results were known, but you can visit kenyon.edu/moniker to learn the latest.

This spring, the College continued its commitment to integrating environmental stewardship into its curriculum, campus operations and campus culture. One exciting way this is happening is that Kenyon is refraining from new commitments in specialized private investment funds that focus on fossil fuels — expecting that less than 1% of Kenyon’s endowment portfolio will be invested in fossil fuels by 2030. This news and more was shared in Kenyon’s new quarterly Green Newsletter. If you don’t already receive it, I encourage you to sign up for it at bit.ly/Green-Kenyon.

As summer approaches, Kenyon is preparing to welcome several groups of alumni back to campus. First, more than 100 members of the Class of 2020 and their families have registered to attend their belated Commencement taking place on the Hill May 22. On May 26, the Classes of 1970, 1971 and 1972 will be kicking off Reunion Weekend a day early with special 50th Reunion programming. And then, as you know, all alumni are welcome back to campus May 27-29 for what promises to be the biggest alumni gathering in the College’s history! If you aren’t able to make it back for Reunion this year, I hope you’ll plan to attend one soon.

All of the excitement and achievement at Kenyon today can be traced, in part, back to our support. Kenyon relies on our gifts to the Kenyon Fund to support every aspect of students’ experience today, from seminars to scholarships. I hope you’ll join me in making a gift today. We know first-hand how a Kenyon education can impact one’s future — not just professionally, but personally. When we support Kenyon’s current and future students, we help make a Kenyon family like ours a possibility for many more.

Thank you!
Michelle von Hirschberg

Class of 2010 Spring Notes

Caitlin Addlesperger - I moved from New York to Wyoming a few years ago. My husband and I are thrilled to be back under big skies and closer to family, especially since we welcomed our amazing daughter, Hazel Kay Hoversten, last spring. I work for Ucross, an artist residency program on a beautiful ranch at the foothills of the Bighorn Mountains, where I have had the pleasure of meeting several Kenyonite writers, visual artists, composers, and choreographers. The shared love of Middle Path is always a bond!

Rachel Burgreen - I’m still living in Austin, TX with my partner Stefan and our two dogs. I’ve spent the past year expanding my therapy practice and have added two clinicians to my team! Besides that we also purchased some property in Bentonville, AR. My partner is a competitive mountain biker and if he has his way he’ll get me out on the trails there, too.

Matt Colburn - Matt is teaching English in Italy.

Julia DeNiro - I'm a Data Governance Specialist working for Cardinal Health.

Laura DiNardo - Greetings Class of 2010! I'm happy to report that the last 6 months have brought many positive changes my way. In August, I got engaged to my boyfriend of 5 years, Justin Scott. We are getting married in Charlottesville, VA in October 2022. In September, I left my job coordinating a work-based learning program in Arlington Public Schools and accepted a new position as a senior manager with the Association for Career & Technical Education. In February (because planning a wedding and starting a new job weren't keeping me busy enough) Justin and I decided to purchase our first house. We will be relocating to Pittsburgh, PA (his hometown) for the next few years. I am going to miss my Kenyon in DC family immensely but plan to be back for regular visits. Let me know if you are in or around the Pittsburgh area - I'd love to (re)connect with you!

Tracey Farris - I'm getting married April 9 to my quarantine partner, Chris! We're moving to Louisville, Kentucky this summer, so any alumni in town - I'd love to catch up.

Annie (Severe) Karp - I am living in Cincinnati, Ohio and working as a Social Worker at the VA Medical Center. I continue to make regular painting commissions, as I was an Art Major at Kenyon. My husband and I have a 3-year-old son named James, who keeps us on our toes. In December of 2021, we welcomed a baby girl named Emily. I am in regular contact with many Kenyon classmates who make life a little brighter!

Max Kelly - Max is working as a plaintiff's attorney in national consolidated mass torts actions. In January 2022, Max was a central member of the trial team that won a $110 million verdict on behalf of US military veterans who were injured by defective earplugs designed and manufactured by the 3M Company.

McNeil Parker - Hello from Long Island, New York. My football career has kept my wife, two daughters (3 and 1) and myself on the move. We enjoyed our first season as a Seawolf and have loved exploring the island.

Andrew Pohlman - Tjena! After spending almost ten years in Nevada and California for a PhD and work, I moved to the city of Skellefteå in northern Sweden early 2021. Seeing the midnight sun in the summer and aurora borealis on a regular basis in the winter has been a unique experience as I contribute to building the (currently) largest lithium ion battery factory in Europe. If you are in Stockholm or your travels take you near the Arctic Circle, say hello!

Alexandra Shaeffer - I recently left Cleveland after serving as a program director at John Carroll University, and moved to Maine with my husband, five cats, and dog. I work as a private education and research consultant for graduate students working on their dissertations. I miss Ohio but am happy to be out of higher ed :)

Sam Turner - Since moving from the Center for Global Engagement over to the Office of Campus Events this past October, I've organized or assisted on a number of major campus events. This spring is ALL about a double Commencement Weekend on the Hill though! Both the Class of 2022 & the Class of 2020 will get to walk across that stage! Then just a few days later everyone is welcome back for Reunion! I'm hoping to see lots of the 2010's there!

Michelle von Hirschberg - My job as a sales manager in Jacobs' life sciences business continues to be very busy. When I'm not writing proposals, I'm running after my 2.5 year old daughter, Ellie, who is now chatting/singing up a storm. We're excited to be planning some travels this summer and finally building our new deck, a project that's been in the works since last July. Really looking forward to Ohio spring and Reunion Weekend on the Hill (fingers crossed)!

Katie Weber - Still in Seattle! Just bought a house here with my husband, Wilson Bull '08. We just celebrated 14 years together!

Lee (Orr) White - Lee & Jamie White welcomed their daughter, Anna Griggs White, on December 4th 2021. They're enjoying their life in London and adjusting to navigating the tube with a "pram".
