Class of 2009 Spring Class Letter
| |
| Dear classmates,
It’s officially Reunion month on the Hill! Even though this year isn’t a milestone reunion year for us, all alumni are welcome back for Reunion Weekend this year (and in the future!) and the fact that alumni are FINALLY able to reunite on campus again after two years of virtual gatherings is something worth celebrating. The sense of isolation that has accompanied the past two years has been challenging to navigate, but having the support of you all, my Kenyon family, has continued to brighten the darkest parts of this pandemic for me — thank you!
Last fall, I hope you heard about (and perhaps supported!) the new Kenyon Access Initiative. We are eight months into our five-year partnership with the Schuler Education Foundation to increase access to Kenyon for exceptional students with limited resources. Our extended Kenyon community has enthusiastically responded by making more than 1,113 gifts to support this unique initiative, helping to create new scholarships that will be awarded to students we are enrolling now. In further great news, applications this year hit another record, up 14% over last year.
Hopefully you saw the news from President Sean Decatur this winter that, in response to calls from students as we approach our Bicentennial, he agreed the time had come to look beyond Lords and Ladies. Thanks to all of you who have submitted suggestions or other feedback for the process to consider a new athletics moniker. This letter was finalized before the results were known, but you can visit kenyon.edu/moniker to learn the latest.
This spring, the College continued its commitment to integrating environmental stewardship into its curriculum, campus operations and campus culture. One exciting way this is happening is that Kenyon is refraining from new commitments in specialized private investment funds that focus on fossil fuels — expecting that less than 1% of Kenyon’s endowment portfolio will be invested in fossil fuels by 2030. This news and more was shared in Kenyon’s new quarterly Green Newsletter. If you don’t already receive it, I encourage you to sign up for it at bit.ly/Green-Kenyon.
As summer approaches, Kenyon is preparing to welcome several groups of alumni back to campus. First, more than 100 members of the Class of 2020 and their families have registered to attend their belated Commencement taking place on the Hill May 22. On May 26, the Classes of 1970, 1971 and 1972 will be kicking off Reunion Weekend a day early with special 50th Reunion programming. And then, as you know, all alumni are welcome back to campus May 27-29 for what promises to be the biggest alumni gathering in the College’s history! If you aren’t able to make it back for Reunion this year, I hope you’ll plan to attend one soon.
All of the excitement and achievement at Kenyon today can be traced, in part, back to our support. Kenyon relies on our gifts to the Kenyon Fund to support every aspect of students’ experience today, from seminars to scholarships. I hope you’ll join me in making a gift today. We know first-hand how a Kenyon education can impact one’s future — not just professionally, but personally. When we support Kenyon’s current and future students, we help make a Kenyon family like ours a possibility for many more.
Thank you! Austin Faught

Class of 2009 Spring Notes

Aileen Caldwell just started a new job as the Senior Specialist, Archives and Heritage Communications at Northwestern Mutual in Milwaukee, WI, and she is so happy to continue her career as a corporate archivist. Recently, she and her partner, Drew, bought a mid-century ranch house, and they are excited to begin the journey of homeownership!
Emma Wampler is embarking on a career change! She is moving out of user experience research to begin as a clinical research coordinator for the University of Washington's Cardiology clinical trials unit. She’s excited to be involved in research that has such a direct impact on peoples' lives! She’s also excited, after two years of working from home, to be seeing people in an office again!
Colleen McLellan bought a house in Detroit, had a baby named Rosie, and joined the Advancement team at Detroit Symphony Orchestra. (Shoutout to Sacha Jowise Schneider for helping her navigate the career change.) She and her better half love to have guests, and her personal email hasn't changed since 2004, so don't be a stranger!
Matt Peck’s big news in 2021 was closing on a condo in the Roscoe Village area of Chicago. He was also a groomsman in the wedding of Drew Schad ’08 in Chicago last fall. In March, he left the Locked On Bulls podcast after 4.5 years to accept the position of Bulls Content Lead at CHGO. He is very excited for this new venture and can't wait to continue bringing Bulls fans their content in fun, new ways as the team is on the upswing.
Austin Faught reports that he and his wife, Jackie, are approaching five years of living in Memphis, TN. He’s been working at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in the Department of Radiation Oncology the entire time. Their son, Eric, just turned two and they marvel at how time has flown by. They love spending free time at the local parks and zoo. Austin looks forward to bringing Eric to Gambier for the first time and sharing with him the many memories that formed his Kenyon experience. Austin says to reach out if you're ever passing through Memphis.
After 16 years together (meeting during their freshman year at Kenyon and getting engaged on the Kokosing Trail during their 10-Year Reunion in 2019!), Ann Pedtke and Patrick Smyth finally made things official and got married at Gilbertsville Farmhouse in upstate New York on October 2, 2021. Andrew James Bauer ‘08 and Caleb Ruopp were in attendance. During COVID-19, Ann served as Director of Volunteer Engagement at Food Bank For New York City, mobilizing more than 4,000 volunteers to distribute over 100 million emergency meals during the pandemic -- and was recognized as a "40 Under 40" Rising Star in Food Policy by the NYC Food Policy Center. Patrick completed his doctorate in English at The Graduate Center, CUNY and began a postdoc in Humanities Entrepreneurship, through which he is launching Iota School, an organization focused on bringing accessible technical training to academic audiences. They continue to live in Queens where they enjoy the best of both worlds: all the energy of New York City, and a longstanding community where they know their neighbors.

Dave Mastrangelo is approaching 10 years as a staffer on Capitol Hill where he currently works for several House Democrats. He recently got back into the political fundraising world as a consultant primarily in Washington, DC and New York City. Dave and his cat, Broccoli, live in Chevy Chase, DC.
After five years making documentaries at CBS Sports and News, Dave Brand took a job as Director of Content at Learfield/IMG. He's living in Brooklyn with his puppy Ted, who last night, ate his wallet -- credit cards and driver's license included. Fortunately, Ted is a rescue from Puerto Rico and has an incredibly efficient and resilient digestive system.
Sophie Munoz was working as a nurse when the pandemic hit. She reports that she had COVID-19 early in the pandemic and unfortunately has not recovered. She’s had a range of health effects including bilateral pneumonia, a tracheoesophageal fistula, pulmonary hypertension, and preload failure. Although still on oxygen, she continues to get better and hopes to be able to return to work, albeit only part-time, by the end of the year. A more detailed history and updates can be found on her YouTube channel Becoming a Pegazebracorn.
