Sprin 2022 Class Letters

Class of 2007 Spring Class Letter

Dear classmates,

It’s officially Reunion month on the Hill! I hope to see many of you back in Gambier this May to celebrate our reunion year at what will certainly be a weekend to remember since alumni are FINALLY able to reunite on campus again after two years of virtual gatherings. Like so many, the pandemic has created challenges big and small to navigate but in this time I have had the pleasure of reconnecting with a number of classmates which has certainly been a silver lining of this time.

Last fall, I hope you heard about (and perhaps supported!) the new Kenyon Access Initiative. We are eight months into our five-year partnership with the Schuler Education Foundation to increase access to Kenyon for exceptional students with limited resources. Our extended Kenyon community has enthusiastically responded by making more than 1,113 gifts to support this unique initiative, helping to create new scholarships that will be awarded to students we are enrolling now. In further great news, applications this year hit another record, up 14% over last year.

Hopefully you saw the news from President Sean Decatur this winter that, in response to calls from students as we approach our Bicentennial, he agreed the time had come to look beyond Lords and Ladies. Thanks to all of you who have submitted suggestions or other feedback for the process to consider a new athletics moniker. This letter was finalized before the results were known, but you can visit kenyon.edu/moniker to learn the latest.

This spring, the College continued its commitment to integrating environmental stewardship into its curriculum, campus operations and campus culture. One exciting way this is happening is that Kenyon is refraining from new commitments in specialized private investment funds that focus on fossil fuels — expecting that less than 1% of Kenyon’s endowment portfolio will be invested in fossil fuels by 2030. This news and more was shared in Kenyon’s new quarterly Green Newsletter. If you don’t already receive it, I encourage you to sign up for it at bit.ly/Green-Kenyon.

As summer approaches, Kenyon is preparing to welcome several groups of alumni back to campus. First, more than 100 members of the Class of 2020 and their families have registered to attend their belated Commencement taking place on the Hill May 22. On May 26, the Classes of 1970, 1971 and 1972 will be kicking off Reunion Weekend a day early with special 50th Reunion programming. And then, as you know, many of us will be back on campus May 27-29 for what promises to be the biggest alumni gathering in the College’s history! I can’t wait to catch up with you all, relive old memories and share a few laughs together.

All of the excitement and achievements at Kenyon today can be traced, in part, back to our support. Kenyon relies on our gifts to the Kenyon Fund to support every aspect of students’ experience today, from seminars to scholarships. I hope you’ll join me in making a stretch gift this year in honor of our reunion. We know first-hand how a Kenyon education can impact one’s future — not just professionally, but personally. When we support Kenyon’s current and future students, we help make a Kenyon family like ours a possibility for many more.

Thank you!
Will O’Keefe

Class of 2007 Spring Notes

Willow Belden: Last summer, I packed up my cat and some recording equipment and drove out to my family's cabin in Maine. The cat hated the four-day road trip (despite the happy pills the vet had prescribed), but our six-week stint on the East Coast was a gift nonetheless. I worked remotely (a challenge, given the lack of internet at the cabin), saw family I hadn't seen since before the pandemic, and kayaked almost daily.

This February, the podcast I host launched a new season. (The show is called Out There, and we explore big questions through intimate stories outdoors). Running an independent podcast isn't easy, but I'm proud of this season's stories. They're bold and vibrant, and they center people and perspectives that are too often sidelined in traditional media. If you're looking for a new podcast to add to your queue, I'd be honored to have you as a listener!

Erin Ellingwood: After nearly 6 years as the statewide Web & eCommunications Manager, I left Mass Audubon in late February to pursue a new career. I'm working to become a community naturalist, with a focus on native pollinator-plant-habitat conservation ecology. To prepare, I'll be spending the next 1.5 years completing several science courses, educator trainings, and a graduate certificate program in natural resources management. Other than that, my husband Yuval and I still love living in Somerville, MA, and not working means I'll have more time to get dirt under my nails in my native pollinator and certified wildlife habitat gardens.

Lisa Hamer and her husband Ifeanyi are enjoying their life in the beautiful southwest, where she remains a public defender for Taos County residents in New Mexico. They recently discovered the joy of hot air ballooning and canyoneering. Always up for visitors to this magical land of enchantment!

Lisa King: Sam ’06 and I are officially outnumbered - Isaac was born in January, welcomed by proud big brothers Owen (4) and Ethan (2). We got a minivan just in time, and we are looking forward to family road-trips this summer.

Chris Laco and his wife welcomed their third child, Annabelle Rose, in September. Everyone is healthy and doing well.

Nelie (Zanca) Lynch: Our family welcomed our newest member right before the holidays - Laura Claire Lynch. Big brother David (3) loves "helping" with the baby!

Kris Magnuson wrote and produced an experimental rock album, A Tacit Accord, with his project, Ver Novum. Streaming everywhere March 11. Head to VerNovumBand.com to learn more.

Megan Maurer: I recently accepted a position as Assistant Professor of Landscape Architecture and Planning at the University of Copenhagen. As a result, Jeremy Spater and I have moved to Copenhagen, Denmark with our son (age 6), where we enjoy biking, swimming, and learning Danish.

Lauren C. Ostberg, living in Hadley, Massachusetts, rejoined the orchestra after a decade away (pretty rusty!) and is increasingly excited about the idea of writing essays in the form of legal briefs. Ben Taylor has started playing Go with their oldest son and has gotten several Wordles in three tries.

Dr. Kelsey C. Ross has been a Physical Therapist for almost 10 years! A fact that she only realized when writing this note - so thanks for that. Due to the pandemic, being a traveling physical therapist, alongside her boyfriend was no longer an option so they settled down in Vail, CO for the last 2 years. Happily, said boyfriend became her fiancé in October '21 at 12,500 feet. Being a PT for Vail Health - Howard Head Sports Medicine has been an awesome, crazy adventure but one that will conclude at the end of this winter season. This pandemic has taught her that family and friends are best enjoyed close-by...and in warm weather. Kelsey has worked with a variety of elite athletes and yet the most noteworthy patient recently was none other than Tad Gruman's ‘08 (fellow Chaser) uncle!

Stu Schisgall: After spending 12 years in Chicago, the Schisgall family is suburb bound. We're moving to Naperville and are very excited to not share walls with our immediate neighbors.

Lilly Stolper: I'm still trucking along as an emergency department nurse practitioner, hoping we've seen the last major surge in Covid cases so I can maybe go back to not wearing an N95 throughout each entire 10 hour shift! Fingers crossed. I just completed my post-masters program and sat my Family Nurse Practitioner board exam so I can add some more letters behind my name! I'm now (hopefully) done with academia forever and will be celebrating imminently with a trip to the balmy Caribbean (as much as I love Providence, RI, I'm ready for some sun)!

Amy Strieter: To begin a doctoral program in English, Creative Writing, I moved this summer from Eugene, Oregon to Athens, Ohio. I'm so happy to be just a few hours from Cleveland and Kenyon. I love being a student again, and have been very delighted by my current coursework in Romanticism centering around good old Frankenstein. (Everyone, BTW, read Wollstonecraft. Holy cheese.) I plan to be at reunion and hope it's safe enough for everyone to come!

Aaron Tracy: Finished my Fellowship in Primary Care Sports Medicine at the University of Maryland and I am living in Houston, Texas with my fiancé and we are getting married in August 2022.
