Class of 2006 Spring Class Letter
| |
| Dear classmates,
It’s officially Reunion month on the Hill! Even though this year isn’t a milestone reunion year for us, all alumni are welcome back for Reunion Weekend this year (and in the future!) and the fact that alumni are FINALLY able to reunite on campus again after two years of virtual gatherings is something worth celebrating.
Last fall, I hope you heard about the new Kenyon Access Initiative. We are eight months into our five-year partnership with the Schuler Education Foundation to increase access to Kenyon for exceptional students with limited resources. Our extended Kenyon community has enthusiastically responded by making more than 1,113 gifts to support this unique initiative, helping to create new scholarships that will be awarded to students we are enrolling now. In further great news, applications this year hit another record, up 14% over last year.
Hopefully you saw the news from President Sean Decatur this winter that, in response to calls from students as we approach our Bicentennial, he agreed the time had come to look beyond Lords and Ladies. Thanks to all of you who have submitted suggestions or other feedback for the process to consider a new athletics moniker. This letter was finalized before the results were known, but you can visit kenyon.edu/moniker to learn the latest.
This spring, the College continued its commitment to integrating environmental stewardship into its curriculum, campus operations and campus culture. One exciting way this is happening is that Kenyon is refraining from new commitments in specialized private investment funds that focus on fossil fuels — expecting that less than 1% of Kenyon’s endowment portfolio will be invested in fossil fuels by 2030. This news and more was shared in Kenyon’s new quarterly Green Newsletter. If you don’t already receive it, I encourage you to sign up for it at bit.ly/Green-Kenyon.
As summer approaches, Kenyon is preparing to welcome several groups of alumni back to campus. First, more than 100 members of the Class of 2020 and their families have registered to attend their belated Commencement taking place on the Hill May 22. On May 26, the Classes of 1970, 1971 and 1972 will be kicking off Reunion Weekend a day early with special 50th Reunion programming. And then, as you know, all alumni are welcome back to campus May 27-29 for what promises to be the biggest alumni gathering in the College’s history! If you aren’t able to make it back for Reunion this year, I hope you’ll plan to attend one soon.
All of the excitement and achievement at Kenyon today can be traced, in part, back to our support. Kenyon relies on our gifts to the Kenyon Fund to support every aspect of students’ experience today, from seminars to scholarships. I hope you’ll join me in making a gift today. We know first-hand how a Kenyon education can impact one’s future — not just professionally, but personally. When we support Kenyon’s current and future students, we help make a Kenyon family like ours a possibility for many more.
Thank you!
Mary Todd

Class of 2006 Spring Notes
| |
Mika Bachmaha: Hi Kenyon friends. It’s been a while. I’m writing this class note from outside Lviv, Ukraine. Yesterday I woke up at 5 am to the news that my country is being invaded by Russia. It’s my second day living in an active war zone and my family has already hidden in a bomb shelter twice and has hosted 2 displaced families with small children. Sorry to be a bummer in this class note but Ukraine and I need your support. Ukraine is a peaceful country, we never threatened any of our neighbors nor did we ask for this war. But if we are being attacked we will fight back to defend our sovereignty, our freedom, our children. Please fight with me. Pressure your representatives to f*uck putin over. And thanks to many of you who have reached out and send their well wishes.
Johnny Sadoff: Hi! I’m still living in Somerville, Massachusetts. I have been running my own chess tutoring business - ChessMate Tutors - for the past 3 years. Since the release of The Queen’s Gambit on Netflix - chess has become king. If any Kenyon alum are in the area, please feel free to look me up and play a game of chess.
Amy Aloe: I am still in Maine, and still having babies. This apparently seems to be a welcome theme these last few years. My family welcomed Arlo Bear Gorenski in February. He joins big sisters Ayla (3), and Avry (2). My spouse, Garrett, and I are taking suggestions for two-syllable "A" names in case we have any other kids.
Ginger Larsen: My partner and I (along with our feline fur-babies) are moving to Manhattan in March 2022! After spending the past 13 years in San Francisco, I'm excited for the change and look forward to experiencing all NY has to offer - live theater, excellent bars and restaurants, weekend trips throughout the Northeast, proximity to Europe, etc. Work-wise, I just passed my 6-year mark with Facebook (now Meta) and last year started a new role as a Game Producer and am loving it.
NY-based Kenyonites - please hit me up with your recommendations! Text is best @ 602-999-3074. Cheers!
Maggie (McNamara) Schmid: I'm waiting in breathless anticipation for the announcement of Kenyon's new, improved, and ultra-inclusive mascots. Given the news that Kenyon's annual tuition now tops $80,000 a year (only a Lord a Lady can afford it!), one has to question the college's commitment to diversity. The scope and complexity of our nation's problems are certainly daunting, and I understand that performative activism helps iGen and their academic keepers sleep at night, but please, let's drop the charade that this is anything more than an exercise virtue signaling.
Rayya El Zein, PhD: I left academia in the spring of 2021 and have been enjoying a new start at Code for Science & Society, a non profit working with open source, digital public infrastructure projects. (Great to see fellow alumni at some virtual events we've been running!) Eager to connect with folks working in open data or public interest technology. Reach me by email at rayyaelz@gmail.com or on Twitter @rayelz.
Charmayne Cooley, MD: I am in the midst of Emergency Medicine Residency training in Detroit. I'm continually reassured that this is the right field and perfect program for me. It's such an honor to serve my patients in this community. We also bought a home in Grosse Pointe Park and love hosting people so let me know if you live in the area or are just passing through.
Molly (Mickinak) Loggins: Chris ’08 and I welcomed our sweet baby boy, Jeremiah John Loggins, to the world on October 25th, 2021. He joined Big Brother Christopher who just recently turned 5! I hope that all of my ‘06 classmates are safe and well!
Debra Stone: I live with my wonderful husband, Ron Kim, and our faithful black cat in Old Greenwich, CT. I am an attorney by day and ballet dancer by night.
Laura Richardson: Wow! What an exciting year it’s been. Got bangs, got separated, got a new job, got my nose pierced, and so on. And I know what you’re thinking: “Bangs again?!? You nut - will you ever learn?” And the answer is “no - bangs is a lesson that just doesn’t stick.”
Sam Anderson: Sam and Grace Twesigye are wildly competent parents of a toddler (Xavier). Grace just started as Head of Client Strategy and Operations at Wiser while consulting for a DEI company called Courage Collective, and Sam continues to enjoy working for Cornell as an Urban Agriculture Specialist. They have now lived in Brooklyn long enough to pass as "hip" or "gucci."
Jenna Brubaker: Big year for me and my husband Adam! Last March I started a new job (going back to my healthcare roots working for the healthcare tech startup, Olive); in June we moved from Chicago to Hoboken, NJ; and in September we celebrated my birthday by having a baby! Now 6 months old, Jonah is super into balloons, the fridge, the bath, giggling, banging on the piano, and burping like a pro. Can’t wait to show him around Gambier someday. Hope everyone is healthy and well.
