Class of 1994 Spring Class Letter
| |
| Dear Class of 1994,
It’s officially Reunion month on the Hill! Although this year isn’t a milestone reunion year for us, all alumni are welcome back for Reunion Weekend this year (and in the future!), and the fact that alumni are FINALLY able to reunite on campus again after two years of virtual gatherings is something worth celebrating. The sense of isolation that has accompanied the past two years has been challenging to navigate, but a bright spot has been finding joy in the connections I have with my Kenyon family. I hope that’s been true for you as well.
Last fall, I hope you heard about the new Kenyon Access Initiative (perhaps you even supported it!). Kenyon is eight months into a five-year partnership with the Schuler Education Foundation to increase access to Kenyon for exceptional students with limited resources. Our extended Kenyon community has enthusiastically responded by making more than 1,113 gifts to support this unique initiative, helping to create new scholarships that will be awarded to students we are enrolling now. In further great news, applications this year hit another record, up 14% over last year.
Hopefully you saw the recent news from President Sean Decatur announcing plans to look beyond Kenyon’s athletic moniker, the Lords and Ladies. This was done in response to students who identified the upcoming Bicentennial as an opportunity to reconsider how we identify our teams. As a proud alum of the Ladies’ Volleyball team, I will admit mixed feelings about this. However, I appreciate the Administration’s openness to change and its response to the input of students. Thanks to all who have submitted suggestions or other feedback for the process to consider a new athletics moniker. Because this letter was finalized before the results were known, I can’t share outcomes, but updates can be found if you visit kenyon.edu/moniker.
This spring, the College continued its commitment to integrating environmental stewardship into its curriculum, campus operations and campus culture. One exciting way this is happening is that Kenyon is refraining from new commitments in specialized private investment funds that focus on fossil fuels — expecting that less than 1% of Kenyon’s endowment portfolio will be invested in fossil fuels by 2030. This news and more was shared in Kenyon’s new quarterly Green Newsletter. If you don’t already receive it, I encourage you to sign up for it at bit.ly/Green-Kenyon.
As summer approaches, Kenyon is preparing to welcome several groups of alumni back to campus. First, more than 100 members of the Class of 2020 and their families have registered to attend their belated Commencement taking place on the Hill May 22. On May 26, the Classes of 1970, 1971 and 1972 will be kicking off Reunion Weekend a day early with special 50th Reunion programming. And then, as you know, all alumni are welcome back to campus May 27-29 for what promises to be the biggest alumni gathering in the College’s history. If you aren’t able to make it back for Reunion this year, I hope you’ll plan to attend one soon. Remember our next Class Reunion will be in 2024, the same year as Kenyon’s Bicentennial!
All of the excitement and achievement at Kenyon today can be traced, in part, back to our support. Kenyon relies on our gifts to the Kenyon Fund to support every aspect of students’ experiences, from seminars to scholarships. I hope you’ll join me in making a gift today. We know first-hand how a Kenyon education can impact one’s future — not just professionally, but personally. When we support Kenyon’s current and future students, we help make a Kenyon family like ours a possibility for many more.
Thank you for all you do to support Kenyon.
Wishing you all the very best, Sarah Hall P.S. Scroll down to view the 1994 class notes.

Same town (Arlington, MA). Same job (MIT). Same spouse (Amy). Same kids (Abby, Sammy, both 10). New dog (a Cavapoo named Luna, most often called Tuna).
Colleen Grazioso (Hopkins)
Now that my husband and I can work from home forever, after 18 years, we have moved from Millburn, NJ to Manchester Center, Vermont! Reach out if you are in the area!
Robert Rogers
This September, I married my best friend and the love of my life, Kristen Holmstrand, in our hometown of Plymouth, Massachusetts. Many of our friends from the class of '94 (including Jason Creux, Katy Dettinger, Stephanie Hartman, Brad Hersh and Loren Lease) were able to watch via livestream as we exchanged rings and read to each other from David Copperfield.
Jen (Usher) Anderson
In 2021, I started a new role at T-Mobile in Digital Marketing, leading a team to define the holy grail of connecting traditional brand marketing to e-Commerce impact. No easy task for any industry, so please reach out if you've done it!!! Our daughter started high school and despite a few covid related closures is enjoying classes and sports (finally) in real life! We spend a lot of time with Katie (Usher) Snyder and Al Snyder enjoying family, skiing, cooking, running, and sharing our latest and favorite audio book downloads (I am somewhat obsessed with this.) Staying positive & hopeful, in Seattle and hope you are all safe & sound, too.
Amy (Katz) Leaman
After leaving the legal field during the pandemic, I am now working at an independent used bookstore in the Squirrel Hill neighborhood of Pittsburgh. We have an online presence, so our used books can be found on sites such as Biblio.com and Alibris.com. I've been thrilled to fill orders for customers in Gambier! I hope the little notes I've enclosed have made each recipient's day!
Neil Carlson
With covid rates dropping and life kinda sorta not totally sucking, I was really looking forward to a chill spring. But, no. Here comes Putin saying, "Hold my beer." That said, things in my corner of this crazy world are surprisingly okay. The coworking company I run, Brooklyn Creative League, is opening a new location in Clinton Hill. My son, Rhys, is loving his freshman year of high school, and my daughter, Leigh, is batting 1.000 on college admissions, though we're still waiting on Kenyon! Looking forward to a springtime pilgrimage to Ohio so she can try some of these colleges on for size, so keep an eye out for me on campus if you have kids looking at Ohio schools, too.
Peter Whitcopf
Since my last note, I have recovered from COVID, but my ataxia has worsened. Last December, I moved from Selinsgrove, Pennsylvania to Sandy Springs, Georgia, outside of Atlanta, so I could be closer to my parents and sister, and real public transportation. I lived with my parents for several weeks while my furniture was shipped to my apartment, and we all survived it. I hope to connect with Brendan Keefe ’90 and Jon Howell ’90, in addition to other Kenyon alums in the Atlanta area.
Alexandra Rowley
I love seeing how Kenyon has evolved over the years since my graduation and I’m eternally grateful for all I learned along Middle Path. I would not be a working artist were it not for the broad, creative and mindful education I received from professors Greg Spaid ’68, Melissa Dabakis and Mort Guiney, among so many others. Throughout Covid I’ve been hunkering down in my hometown of NYC with my husband and ten year old son. Very grateful to be working as an artist and photographer with clients as diverse as Architectural Digest, Weight Watchers and The Sunday Times of London Style Magazine. Hope everyone in the Kenyon community is well and safe.
Alison Grippo
Still building the internet one small snippet at a time. Loving LA (if anyone is out here, say hi). My partner is working on a feature film which we're producing, I am still managing to keep an actual career while playing poker part time now that COVID has relented some (I have a few cute WPT Trophies). Enjoying aging in the time of video filters.
Ravana Wijeyeratne
A memorable ski vacation in the French Alps in Feb 2022 thanks to the invitation to the amazing chalet of Kenyon's French TA from 1990/91 Fabrice Claudel. Covid or no covid, we made the trip to spend some unforgettable few days. Also had Russian TA from 1991/92 Irina Vasenina ’95 visit us in Sri Lanka in January 2022. She intends revisiting in October 2022.
Paige R. Ruane
I am living happily in the Hudson Valley with my husband, Jack, a writer and teacher. Being from Gotham, I never expected to end up in the sticks. It felt like The Shining when I got here, but quickly turned into a Mr. Roger's Neighborhood dream. A couple of years ago I co-founded an organization called Partners for Climate Action Hudson Valley (climateactionhv.org). As part of that, I am co-directing the Local Champions program, (localchampionshv.org) which supports municipal leaders through the nuts and bolts of transitioning to sustainable and regenerative practices. My colleagues are wonderful and the work is a gift that keeps on giving. It's a joy to be in close touch with Ron Rittinger, Darnell Heywood and Alex Fox.
James Feuer
James just aired his 1st recurring TV role on A Good Cop and is looking to meet with industry alumni in Los Angeles.
Chris Calvosa
While many of you are contemplating your kids going to or even graduating from college, I'm just getting started. My wife and I were blessed with our second child, a little girl, in mid-February. She and her big brother, who just turned three in early March, are doing well together, but let's see what happens when she's interested in playing with his fire trucks. I've been talking about parenting and taking advice from '94 classmates like Julian Boxenbaum, Nate Nonoy, and Corey Goldsand, and I welcome additional thoughts from any parents who can remember having little kids around the house.
Brad Hughes
I continue to practice law in Columbus where I chair Porter Wright’s Appellate Practice Group and get to see (and sing in church with) Brian Granger ’93 every once in a while. I look forward to celebrating Kenyon classmate David Goodwillie’s 50th Birthday soon in New York with “New Apartments” mates Josh Morgan and Scott (a.k.a. Pritch) Sherman. In the summer I hope to visit some former students in the Czech Republic, from the high school in Ostrava where Almus Thorp ’93 and Scott Finsthwait ’95 also taught after we graduated from Kenyon. I recently enjoyed brainstorming about new Kenyon mascots with some old Kokosingers. I find that staying in touch with old friends is all the more important in these anxious times and I wish everyone all the best!
Amanda Meehan
Greetings from Toledo, Ohio! My biggest recent news: my new novel, A Signal for Redemption, is available on Amazon. (The settlers on the failing ark ship Redemption arrive at their new home world and find the technologically advanced colony they expected isn’t there…)
That pretty much accounts for the non-working, non-sleeping hours of my days, which is all right with me. It’s been the plan for ages—just took longer than I expected to get here. On the subject of a long time ago, I finally took a day trip last summer to visit campus for the first time since 2004. There were a lot of changes, as expected, but it still felt like coming home, which was wonderful.
Mark Kallis
I went to an event yesterday evening honoring Ambassador Andrew Young on his 90th birthday. Leopoldo Lopez ’93 and my favorite opposition leader was also at the event. We connected and look forward to keeping in touch.
