Sprin 2022 Class Letters

Class of 1993 Spring Class Letter

Dear classmates,

It’s officially Reunion month on the Hill! Even though this year isn’t a milestone reunion year for us, all alumni are welcome back for Reunion Weekend this year (and in the future!). And the fact that alumni are FINALLY able to reunite on campus again after two years of virtual gatherings is certainly something worth celebrating. The pandemic-induced sense isolation that has been challenging to navigate, but continued support from and connection to our Kenyon family has helped to brighten the dark days—thank you!

Last fall, I hope you heard about (and perhaps even supported) the new Kenyon Access Initiative. We are eight months into our five-year partnership with the Schuler Education Foundation to increase access to Kenyon for exceptional students with limited resources. Our extended Kenyon community has enthusiastically responded by making more than 1,113 gifts to support this unique initiative, helping to create new scholarships that will be awarded to students we are enrolling now. Speaking of enrollment: applications this year hit another record, up 14% over last year!

Hopefully you saw the news from President Sean Decatur this winter that, in response to calls from students, and as we approach our bicentennial, he agreed the time has come to look beyond Lords and Ladies. Thanks to all of you who have submitted suggestions or other feedback for the process to consider a new athletics moniker. This letter was finalized before the results were known, but you can visit kenyon.edu/moniker to learn the latest.

This spring, the College continued its commitment to integrating environmental stewardship into its curriculum, campus operations and campus culture. One exciting way this is happening is that Kenyon is refraining from new commitments in specialized private investment funds that focus on fossil fuels—expecting that less than 1% of Kenyon’s endowment portfolio will be invested in fossil fuels by 2030. This news and more was shared in Kenyon’s new quarterly Green Newsletter. If you don’t already receive it, I encourage you to sign up for it at bit.ly/Green-Kenyon.

As summer approaches, Kenyon is preparing to welcome several groups of alumni back to campus. First, more than 100 members of the Class of 2020 and their families have registered to attend their belated Commencement taking place on the Hill May 22. On May 26, the Classes of 1970, 1971 and 1972 will be kicking off Reunion Weekend a day early with special 50th Reunion programming. And then, as you know, all alumni are welcome back to campus May 27-29 for what promises to be the biggest alumni gathering in the College’s history! If you can’t make it back for reunion this year, I hope you’ll plan to attend one soon.

All of the excitement and achievement at Kenyon today can be traced, in part, back to our support. Kenyon relies on our gifts to the Kenyon Fund to support every aspect of students’ experience, from seminars to scholarships. I hope you’ll join me in making a gift today. We know first-hand how a Kenyon education can impact one’s future—not just professionally, but personally as well. When we support Kenyon’s current and future students, we help make a Kenyon family like ours a possibility for many more.

Thank you!
Melissa Lord

Time flies…We sent our oldest off to college this year and from all reports he is going well. He was recruited to swim at Princeton and it interestingly had some strong Kenyon connections. Among other ties, one if his assistant coaches is a former Kenyon swimmer. Not easy to pick a school in middle of COVID but everything felt right and he appears to be happy with the decision. Now we get to visit the second prettiest campus in the U.S. In other news, I started the search for child #2 with a visit to the Pacific Northwest.

It has been a tough couple of years. While living in a pandemic, I lost my mother in May of 2020, then my father in October of 2021 (thankfully neither to Covid directly, though pandemic life did not mesh well with senior citizen life). I am hopeful though to resume some traveling in the future to cross some things off my bucket list, because the last two years have reminded me how fragile life can be.

2022 is a busy year! I have two books coming out. One, Muslims of the Heartland, is about Syrian Muslims who settled in the Midwest before World War I. The other, Arab Indianapolis, is timed to come out without an hour-long documentary on local public television.

Anne Merriman Wells
My family and I recently moved from CT to Wellesley MA for a few years. I would love to connect with any former classmates living in the extended Boston area.

Laura González Simpson
My oldest Sofia is half way through her PhD in Physical Therapy. My youngest Natalie is graduating from Butler in May and starting her Masters to become a PA. So proud of both of them studying to help others in the medical field. I’m finishing up my 16th year in education and 8th year as a Literacy Specialist. Rod and I are also having fun with our RV and visiting national parks.

Hilary (Payton) Bunlert
I finally dipped my toe into the waters of publishing with the release of my new paranormal romance series, California Demigods. Curious classmates interested in a racy romantic romp with gods and goddesses is encouraged to check out my author website at hepayton.com/.

Melissa Wood Brewster
My family and I are back to living our Seattle life after living abroad in Spain for a couple years. Since returning, I have been busy parenting 3 kids in high school, managing a busy psychotherapy practice, and trying to stay healthy into my 50's. Fun having my niece playing lacrosse for Denison University.

Maryann Surrick
I recently became General Counsel of The Sentry, an investigative and policy NGO co-founded by George Clooney and John Prendergast that works to combat genocide by shutting war criminals, kleptocrats, and transnational war profiteers out of the international financial system. I still live in Washington, DC, next door to Ann (Miller) Kaye, with my husband, Scott, our two boys, Ben (almost 15) and Will (12), our Labrador, Chloe, and our free-range house bunny, Bartleby.

Trish Segal Piliado
After 22 years in the Pacific NW, I moved back to Ohio in November. I am super excited that I have been able to re-connect with a few of my favorite Kenyon classmates and friends: Randy Rock, Amy McLanahan and Jen Carter. I bought my dream horse farm in the small town of Marengo, 30 minutes north of Columbus and 30 minutes from Kenyon! I also have a guest suite that I am renting through airbnb, so if you need a place to stay near Kenyon, keep me in mind. I took a new job with Columbus City Schools as the Supervisor of Social Emotional and Student Support Services and am excited to be back in the Midwest.

Kelly Raymond Burdsall
Hi all! I’m feeling some Kenyon nostalgia these days as my daughter is applying to colleges. Kenyon is on her list, but not at the top, despite my hilarious stories of library antics, Peirce extendo, bookstore bagels and a promise that cashew chicken is the best meal she’ll ever have. The pandemic has been a long haul for our family. My husband and I both worked with COVID patients throughout the entirety of these past 2 years, and I finally reached my breaking point in November and switched to a very low key, low stress job. While just starting to relax a little bit, we had a house fire and have been displaced to an Airbnb for a while. I have made it through all this thanks to my Acland ladies (and Rob!) group chat, pass-through visits from Hutch, and nearly daily pep talks from Nancy Remley and Meredith Cronan. Kenyon friends for the win!

Hard to believe our son, Charlie '23, will wrap up his junior year at Kenyon this spring. Our daughter, Ellie, will be a Freshman at Bucknell University in the Fall. Janie has two more years of high school, and while we are definitely not rushing her, Chuck and I are looking forward to the next chapter! Chuck is working for T. Rowe Price, remotely, but has recently resumed traveling. I am still working in development for a local non-profit. We are grateful to have survived the pandemic relatively unscathed and appreciated the unexpected benefit of more family time with the kids. Since the masks have come off and restrictions have lifted, we have barely seen them!

Jen Gundlach
I have really enjoyed serving on the steering committee for Kenyon Women Giving Back, which celebrates and amplifies the impact Kenyon women have made on the College and on the world by building connections and philanthropic support. I encourage other women alumni to get involved - feel free to reach out to me!
