Class of 1989 Spring Class Letter
| |
| Dear classmates,
It’s officially Reunion month on the Hill! Yes, that’s right, it is our 35th reunion!
Just kidding, we’re not that old. Yet. Even though this year isn’t a milestone reunion year for us, all alumni are welcome back for Reunion Weekend this year (and in the future!) and the fact that alumni are FINALLY able to reunite on campus again after two years of virtual gatherings is something worth celebrating. IT will be fun to connect with alumni from different years, both before and after our year.
Last fall, I hope you heard about (and perhaps supported!) the new Kenyon Access Initiative. We are eight months into our five-year partnership with the Schuler Education Foundation to increase access to Kenyon for exceptional students with limited resources. Our extended Kenyon community has enthusiastically responded by making more than 1,113 gifts to support this unique initiative, helping to create new scholarships that will be awarded to students we are enrolling now. In further great news, applications this year hit another record, up 14% over last year.
Hopefully, you saw the news from President Sean Decatur this winter that, in response to calls from students as we approach our Bicentennial, he agreed the time had come to look beyond Lords and Ladies. Thanks to all of you who have submitted suggestions or other feedback for the process to consider a new athletics moniker. Alas, my suggestion for the new name to be The Gurus was not accepted (or taken seriously). What name got the nod? This letter was finalized before the results were known, but you can visit kenyon.edu/moniker to learn the latest.
This spring, the College continued its commitment to integrating environmental stewardship into its curriculum, campus operations and campus culture. They also announced the news that Lisa Schott ’80, who since 2010 has served as managing director of the College’s land trust, the Philander Chase Conservancy (PCC), will step down from that position at the end of June after a nearly 40-year career with Kenyon. This news and more was shared in Kenyon’s new quarterly Green Newsletter. If you don’t already receive it, I encourage you to sign up for it at bit.ly/Green-Kenyon.
As summer approaches, Kenyon is preparing to welcome several groups of alumni back to campus. First, more than 100 members of the Class of 2020 and their families have registered to attend their belated Commencement taking place on the Hill May 22. On May 26, the Classes of 1970, 1971 and 1972 will be kicking off Reunion Weekend a day early with special 50th Reunion programming. And then, as you know, all alumni are welcome back to campus May 27-29 for what promises to be the biggest alumni gathering in the College’s history! If you aren’t able to make it back for Reunion this year, I hope you’ll plan to attend one soon.
All of the excitement and achievement at Kenyon today can be traced, in part, back to our support. Yes, even our class of reprobates helps the Kenyon Fund to support every aspect of students’ experience today, from seminars to scholarships. I hope you’ll join me in making a gift today. We know first-hand how a Kenyon education can impact one’s future — not just professionally, but personally. When we support Kenyon’s current and future students, we help make a Kenyon family like ours a possibility for many more.
Thank you!
David “Guru” Richards ‘89

Hello! It’s been a while since I posted an update and hope all are well. 2021 was a busy year. I downsized from the family house to a condo (still in Orlando, FL) and am enjoying the easier lifestyle. One of my sons, Stephen, married to his high school sweetheart, Natalie. My son, Tom, graduated from USF with a degree in Biology, and another son, Matt, started college. I’m enjoying my work on the HRIS team at Travel + Leisure, and, like many others during Covid, became somewhat addicted to my Peloton. Wishing you all a healthy 2022!

This is the year we break ground on our straw bale house. It feels HUGE. Exciting and scary at the same time. We are acting as the contractors and also plan share our 25+ years of experience via workshops/apprenticeships along the way. Newsletter sign-up at www.mudstrawlove.com. The designing is almost complete. Wish us luck!
Erika (Cox) Patrone
This is my first time ever submitting a class note, so I’ll try to cover the past few decades quickly. Immediately after leaving The Hill, I got my M.Ed from John Carroll, started elementary teaching, got married, had 3 kids, then one more (at 42!), My kids are currently 25, 22, 21 and 13. I got divorced in 2013. I started my 32nd year of teaching this year (1st grade), married the man of my dreams in Maui in July of 2022, and bought my first horse in April of 2022! Lots of dreams are coming true and I’m currently happier and healthier than I’ve ever been. Life is good!

Jeanne and I are raising two teenagers in Central Virginia. I have been doing political commentary for ABC, CBS and Fox affiliates as well as online news outlets while still chairing the University of Lynchburg Political Science and International Relations and Security Studies programs.

After a prolonged period of semi-empty nesting, we are moving toward it being official. Alex '21 is now living in Brooklyn with Kenyon friends and working for a small remote arts marking company. Thomas (Trinity '21) has gotten into real estate, is enjoying learning the trade and is moving to Boston with some Trinity friends. Evan (Union '25) is navigating his first year of college, playing soccer and learning that college food is not great. We have enjoyed the extra pandemic-induced time with the boys and our proximity to the ski mountains and disc golf courses means we have regular visitors!
Lincoln Bleveans
It’s been a terrific and very rapid first year at Stanford, where I am in charge of sustainability, utilities, and infrastructure. Meredith ’90 and I are planning a move from greater LA to the Bay Area later this year.
Tanya Charlick-Paley
As part of the national conversation about racial justice, law enforcement and community safety, I am using my political science, community organizing and nonprofit development background in a new way as the Grant Manager for an INGO called Nonviolent Peaceforce that has begun a US program team focusing on combatting police and community violence in Minneapolis and Anti-Asian violence in NYC. We are doing this by providing skills and lessons learned from our work in the Global South to how we can create grassroots responses that de-escalate the violence and shift the responsibility to each of us to do what we can in our neighborhoods, nation and world. It is a great organization and I love my team. As part of this new adventure we have gotten an apartment in Minneapolis and I am loving city life, walkable to lakes and other recreation as well as restaurants and entertainment. Let me know if you are in town!
Jennifer Lister Nix
I am closing in on 28 years of living on California’s Monterey Peninsula, 27 of them in the beautiful little beach town of Pacific Grove (come visit!). Still teaching kindergarten and staying “young” via my truly young student teachers. My daughter (14) and I are very involved in our local theatre scene, and we emerged from the lockdown last summer to perform in Shrek: The Musical at the historic Outdoor Forest Theater in Carmel. We had so much fun, and it got us out of the house, so my husband (Kelly) could play guitar in peace. He feels so “blessed” to live with two drama queens!
Kyla Carlson
Still living the good life in Kirkland, Washington! I hope to bestow hugs upon and/or partake in tequila shots with many of you on The Hill in May! I know we are all in need of some in-person catching up and celebrating!

Work update - after 20 years selling loyalty and order ahead SAS software for Paytronix (I helped start PX back in 2001), I’ve joined what feels and looks very much like a tech start up running their sales team, building apps for c-stores with a company called Rovertown. Not only have they switched me to be a Mac user for the first time in 30 years, I’m 23 years older than their president who started the company 11 years ago in his college dorm. I’m thrilled to be starting this new adventure! Family and kids are great as well!

As previously reported, last year Jean and I sold our house in Shaker Heights, OH and moved into an apartment in Ohio City. It has turned out to be just about everything we hoped for and in some ways even more. We reupped our lease for a second year and are excited for the spring/summer when we can better enjoy the neighborhood. There are things I miss about our old house but at this point I’m REALLY loving not having the responsibility of owning something. I’m also surprised by how much I truly enjoy being able to walk most places. Our walks typically involve going to eat or drink so I’m not sure it’s net positive for my physical health, but it’s mentally uplifting. I can imagine renting for a little while longer while we take our time to figure out what comes next. We regularly fantasize of distancing ourselves from Cleveland winters but summer in Cleveland can be really wonderful, so I expect we’ll always maintain some base here. I moved into a new role at AT&T in October. It’s a business development role and is less hectic than my previous job which I’m really appreciating. Still think about retiring just about every day though…. I hope to get to the group reunion this year if even for the day. Hope to see you there.

In the midst of the pandemic, three of my chaplain colleagues and I wrote a short book on how to care for hospital staff in the midst of traumatic events. The link to this "e-book" is here. The pandemic is winding down. I come on Friday and I don't feel like my brain is on fire.
Will Wilson
Have been the CEO at U.S. Soccer since April 2020, and we moved to Winnetka, IL a little over a year ago (HQ is in Chicago). Have two kids playing varsity soccer at New Trier and our oldest is a First-Year soccer player at Grinnell. Caught up with both Ed and Beth ’90 Beemiller at a Men's World Cup Qualifier in Columbus, and I’m on a regular group chat with Ed, Mike Arbour, Eric Dahlquist, Pete Murphy, Rich Martin, Talal Al-Sowayel, and Ken Orce ’90. Also ran into Kenyon grads Peter Luther ’87, and Charles “Cully” Stimson at the U.S. Soccer AGM in early March in Atlanta. Would be great to connect with Kenyon folks in the Chicagoland area!
Sarah Bamford Seidelmann
Greetings from Minnesota! It’s gotten a bit quieter around here with only one kid left in the nest! The marriage is basking in more buoyancy and it is very good! I published a young adult fiction Where the Deer Dream this Fall which is being enjoyed by small numbers of adults and youth alike - it explores mother daughter relationships, allopathic medicine and traditional spiritual healing with fungi and plants. I’m so grateful for all of my fun Kenyon connections! This February I got to know the ebullient Jennie Hart Robinson - we made fast friends and I’ll be having Skype coffee with her soon! Grateful for this, sometimes, small world and fervently praying for peace.
Lisa Parker Ernst
As you may notice from my last name, I got married! His name is Kevin Ernst and he loves Gambier and Kenyon as much as I do. In fact, his favorite hat is the Kenyon 43022. I have also started a new position as a reading specialist. I work with second through fourth graders and love it! It has reinvigorated me, and I will be taking an intensive Orton-Gillingham course this summer. My last child, James ’22, will graduate from Kenyon this May. I am so lucky to have watched all my kids graduate from Kenyon and was feeling a little bit of the empty nest syndrome, but now my cousin's son will be starting in the fall. The connection continues.
