Sprin 2022 Class Letters

Class of 1990 Spring Class Letter

Dear Class of 1990,

It’s officially Reunion month on the Hill! Even though this year isn’t a milestone reunion year for us, all alumni are welcome back for Reunion Weekend this year (and in the future!) and the fact that alumni are FINALLY able to reunite on campus again after two years of virtual gatherings is something worth celebrating. The sense of isolation that has accompanied the past two years has been challenging to navigate, but having the support of you all, my Kenyon family, has continued to brighten the darkest parts of this pandemic for me — thank you!

Last fall, I hope you heard about (and perhaps supported!) the new Kenyon Access Initiative. We are eight months into our five-year partnership with the Schuler Education Foundation to increase access to Kenyon for exceptional students with limited resources. Our extended Kenyon community has enthusiastically responded by making more than 1,113 gifts to support this unique initiative, helping to create new scholarships that will be awarded to students we are enrolling now. In further great news, applications this year hit another record, up 14% over last year.

Hopefully you saw the news from President Sean Decatur this winter that, in response to calls from students as we approach our Bicentennial, he agreed the time had come to look beyond Lords and Ladies. Thanks to all of you who have submitted suggestions or other feedback for the process to consider a new athletics moniker. This letter was finalized before the results were known, but you can visit kenyon.edu/moniker to learn the latest.

This spring, the College continued its commitment to integrating environmental stewardship into its curriculum, campus operations and campus culture. One exciting way this is happening is that Kenyon is refraining from new commitments in specialized private investment funds that focus on fossil fuels — expecting that less than 1% of Kenyon’s endowment portfolio will be invested in fossil fuels by 2030. This news and more was shared in Kenyon’s new quarterly Green Newsletter. If you don’t already receive it, I encourage you to sign up for it at bit.ly/Green-Kenyon.

As summer approaches, Kenyon is preparing to welcome several groups of alumni back to campus. First, more than 100 members of the Class of 2020 and their families have registered to attend their belated Commencement taking place on the Hill May 22. On May 26, the Classes of 1970, 1971 and 1972 will be kicking off Reunion Weekend a day early with special 50th Reunion programming. And then, as you know, all alumni are welcome back to campus May 27-29 for what promises to be the biggest alumni gathering in the College’s history! If you aren’t able to make it back for Reunion this year, I hope you’ll plan to attend one soon.

All of the excitement and achievement at Kenyon today can be traced, in part, back to our support. Kenyon relies on our gifts to the Kenyon Fund to support every aspect of students’ experience today, from seminars to scholarships. I hope you’ll join me in making a gift today. We know first-hand how a Kenyon education can impact one’s future — not just professionally, but personally. When we support Kenyon’s current and future students, we help make a Kenyon family like ours a possibility for many more.

Thank you!

Class of 1990 Spring Notes

Elizabeth Bell Townsend
Hello to the Class of 1990 from Elizabeth Bell Townsend!  I hope this finds everyone well after the long slog of the past couple years.  Our oldest is now a junior at Boston University and our youngest is in 8th Grade and looking ahead to high school.  But the exciting news is that our middle child, Emily, is a member of Kenyon's Class of 2025!  It was surreal moving her into Gund last August and such fun attending Orientation and Convocation as a parent.  I was lucky enough to visit her over October break, then my husband and I were back two weeks later for Family Weekend.  She is loving Kenyon -- studying English, creative writing, and art history; enjoying hikes at the BFEC; and serving as a DJ of her own WKCO radio show!  So sorry our class missed celebrating our 30th Reunion together but I hope our paths will cross again before too long.  My best to everyone!

Meredith Pastore Bleveans
After 9 years in Los Angeles, my husband (Lincoln Bleveans ’89) and I will be moving to NorCal this summer. He took a job with Stanford last year, and we have been waiting till our youngest finishes high school to move. So, we will be empty nesters, and I will continue to work as a private writing instructor. Happily, the pandemic taught me and my students that we can do great work through the magic of Zoom and Google Docs, so I will be taking them all with me as we move to Half Moon Bay, CA.

Tony Kopyar
It's funny how life can come full circle. Our family bought a house at Apple Valley Lake and we have spent considerable time there the last two summers. Great timing with COVID taking away a lot of typical summer vacation opportunities. Consequently, I frequently drive to Kenyon to get coffee (the KC is now a coffee house) and walk around campus. It looks the same, yet different. On another note, Joe Bline moved into my neighborhood awhile back and we frequently run into one another at different sporting events.

Una Slevin Fogarty
Greetings from NYC. I continue to work in real estate development in the NYC metro area. My eldest daughter Sophia is a freshman at Cornell and my younger daughter is headed to Colby in the fall. I had always hoped one would land in Gambier but they had other ideas sadly. With a little more time on my hands I have been more involved with Kenyon and am leading the newly formed Kenyon Women Give Back, an effort to encourage philanthropy and highlight the many ways Kenyon women contribute to both the college and community. We are running panels that feature alumnae 2-3 times a year - I hope you will join. And if anyone has any suggestions of Kenyon women for us to feature, please let me know.

There were many highs and lows over the past few years for our family. I lost my father suddenly in September and am getting use to the new normal. My boys are now teenagers in 8th and 9th grade, and time seems to be accelerating. Professionally, I am expanding into professional mediation having completed the coursework through Cornell University in February 2022. This shift is inspired by my volunteer work as an elected school board member in New Rochelle, NY. I am currently serving as BOE president, and finding it to be both challenging and rewarding given the current climate. I continue to hang out with my Kenyon roomies Sarah (Watts) Beneke and Jessica (Hart) Selden and we are trying to get together at least once a season.

Jon Babylon Rakestraw
My latest book, Return of the Richmond Vampire, is now available in hardback & e-book. Meam Hartshorn ’21, illustrated it. Go to jonrakestraw.com for more.

Matt Roth
We've been busy at the Roth House during the last year. Candee finished getting a degree in accounting and I've gone entrepreneurial. As the head of North American business development, I'm the first US employee of a company expanding into the US laser optics business. It's drinking from the fire hose getting a new business off the ground, but immensely fun. It's even been easy to balance life with our two youngest still at home (girls Sami 15 and Becca 13) as a result of Covid...an unexpected silver lining. Looking forward to the Reunion and ad hoc K80s frolic!

Dirk Beamer
I am grateful to Kenyon for many things but nothing more than my best friend and the love of my life, Jessica Faith Becker Beamer '92. We celebrate our thirtieth wedding anniversary in August!

Dave Elliott
I am delighted to report I was recently hired as the Artistic Director of the historic Cape Playhouse in Dennis, MA. It's a rather magical place where luminaries such as Gertrude Lawrence, Gregory Peck, Henry Fonda once trod the boards of the beautiful 525 seat theatre... (not to mention the Tony winners from the more recent past - including two I have booked for this summer!)... I was tasked with initially remounting the 2020 season cancelled due to the pandemic and thus we open in May with GREASE, and continue with PRIVATE LIVES, ALWAYS PATSY CLINE, GOD OF CARNAGE, AN AMERICAN IN PARIS, MURDER ON THE ORIENT EXPRESS, and wrap up with THE FANTASTICKS. If you are on the Cape this summer, please come by and visit! Check out the season at www.capeplayhouse.com or shoot me an email at david@capeplayhouse.com ... I'd love to welcome you to the Playhouse!

Joe Bline
February 25th I attended my son's OHSAA Tournament basketball game at #4 Pickerington North with Jon Wilkin ’89 and Steve Baldwin ’90. Steven, my oldest son, had 8 points, 13 rebounds and 5 blocks. Lost by 15, but we have everyone coming back next year. We had a great time catching up after the game with pizza and refreshments.

Derek Bennett
I am living in my home town, New Canaan, CT, with my wife, Shekaiba, and our sons Strider (18) and Phoenix (12). Strider is a freshman at Union College. During his admissions process, I was grateful for the opportunity to reconnect with Sonya Dudgeon ’90, who worked in admissions there, before she passed. I regularly visit Matthew Perry '90 in The City and no longer see Erika Richards ’89 nearly enough since my kids stopped attending her German school. I truly enjoy staying in-touch with the wider Kenyon diaspora via Facebook and Instagram, especially the K80s group.

I have been working as a technologist, software architect, and team lead for ION Group, a big FinTech company, for the last 10 years.

Marc Just
This past year included some continuations and some endings. Lisa and I are still living near Chesterfield, Virginia. I was able to catch up with a number of Kenyon classmates, although it would have been nicer to have been able to do so in person. I have been interacting with new Kenyon acquaintances through the K80's group on Facebook. The end of 2021 wound down my year as Master of my Masonic lodge. Lastly, I have decided that I am officially retired. Hopefully that will provide time to catch up with more old friends.

Kristin Swanson Pastoriza
Hugh Pastoriza ’91 and I are still living outside of Seattle and enjoying all that the Pacific Northwest has to offer! We are about to become empty nesters as our youngest, Mason (18) heads off to Western Washington University in the fall to study Fine Arts and Business. Our oldest son, Thomas (20) is currently attending Montana State University in Bozeman so we’ve enjoyed skiing and hiking in Montana over the last few years. During Covid we were happy to have some hilarious Zoom calls with our Kenyon family…looking forward to the reunion this May!

Claire Lane
This year marks 30 years since I moved to Seattle (!!!) and for all its changes, I still love to call it home. But this past year I got to spend several months living “back home” in Chicago, and one of the best parts of that experience was seeing my dear Kenyon roommates, Lara Moutsos and Sam (Ellen) Samberg. I even got to spend a day with Paul Singer ’88, who came from Boston to visit me - which is a lot easier to do in Chicago than Seattle. I work on state and federal hunger policy, so I've just finished my second year lobbying Washington State's legislature - and Congress - virtually. I won't miss wearing masks, but I'd love to keep lobbying in jeans.

Daniel McGuire
Daniel McGuire reports that he and Meredith Beever McGuire ’91 amicably divorced in November 2021 after 26 years of marriage. Meredith has relocated to Bath, Maine, while Dan is moving a much shorter distance to Cedar Knolls, NJ. He will be within walking distance of his job as CEO of Homeless Solutions. Almost as important, he will be a short drive from his local disc golf course!

Jim Johnston
Hello everyone. Living the dream in Denver! Three kids aged 9, 10 and 13, and my wife and I are building an urban fruit tree orchard and vegetable farm. Lots of time devoted to Rotary, preparing to be District Governor soon. Any Rotarians out there?
