Sprin 2022 Class Letters

Class of 1980 Spring Class Letter

Dear classmates,

It’s officially Reunion month on the Hill! Even though this year isn’t a milestone reunion year for us, all alumni are welcome back for Reunion Weekend this year (and in the future!) and the fact that alumni are FINALLY able to reunite on campus again after two years of virtual gatherings is something worth celebrating. The sense of isolation that has accompanied the past two years has been challenging to navigate, but having the support of you all, my Kenyon family, has continued to brighten the darkest parts of this pandemic for me — thank you!

Last fall, I hope you heard about (and perhaps supported!) the new Kenyon Access Initiative. We are eight months into our five-year partnership with the Schuler Education Foundation to increase access to Kenyon for exceptional students with limited resources. Our extended Kenyon community has enthusiastically responded by making more than 1,113 gifts to support this unique initiative, helping to create new scholarships that will be awarded to students we are enrolling now. In further great news, applications this year hit another record, up 14% over last year.

Hopefully you saw the news from President Sean Decatur this winter that, in response to calls from students as we approach our Bicentennial, he agreed the time had come to look beyond Lords and Ladies. Thanks to all of you who have submitted suggestions or other feedback for the process to consider a new athletics moniker. This letter was finalized before the results were known, but you can visit kenyon.edu/moniker to learn the latest.

This spring, the College continued its commitment to integrating environmental stewardship into its curriculum, campus operations and campus culture. They also announced the news that our own Lisa Schott, who since 2010 has served as managing director of the College’s land trust, the Philander Chase Conservancy (PCC), will step down from that position at the end of June after a nearly 40-year career with Kenyon. This news and more was shared in Kenyon’s new quarterly Green Newsletter. If you don’t already receive it, I encourage you to sign up for it at bit.ly/Green-Kenyon.

As summer approaches, Kenyon is preparing to welcome several groups of alumni back to campus. First, more than 100 members of the Class of 2020 and their families have registered to attend their belated Commencement taking place on the Hill May 22. On May 26, the Classes of 1970, 1971 and 1972 will be kicking off Reunion Weekend a day early with special 50th Reunion programming. And then, all alumni are welcome back to campus May 27-29 for what promises to be the biggest alumni gathering in the College’s history! If you cannot make the Reunion this year, I hope you’ll plan to attend one soon.

The excitement and achievement at Kenyon today can be traced, in part, back to our support. Kenyon relies on our gifts to the Kenyon Fund to support every aspect of students’ experience today, from seminars to scholarships. I hope you’ll join me in making a gift today. We know first-hand how a Kenyon education can impact one’s future — not just professionally, but personally. When we support Kenyon’s current and future students, we help make a Kenyon family like ours a possibility for many more.

Thank you!
Tom Chesnutt

Class of 1980 Spring Notes

Drew Peterson:  I (San Diego) will get together with Roger Fillion (Colorado) in Grosse Pointe, MI in April for a friend’s funeral just after a weekend of turkey hunting with old roommate Mike Svihra in his northern Michigan stomping grounds. I’ll be up for spring planting at the family farm in southern Michigan — a lot of sweat that includes primarily small fruit trees and berry bushes. Looking for classmates like Ohio neighbor Mark Thomay ’79 to help! He’s considering his back, as should I!!

Enjoyed catching up and a lot of laughs by Zoom a few weeks ago with a friend since second grade, Roger Fillion, and organic chem buddy Lee Segal and a celebrity surprise guest Kevin Spence. Play indigo halftime with the orthopedic practice in San Diego this summer so more farm work traveling and hunting with Cyndi, 31 years.  Visiting my soon to be married middle son Johnny in Fort Worth, Texas. My oldest son Drew is a junior in Arizona and hitting the gym. My youngest son, Jack is at UCSD and heading towards medical school.

Lisa (Dowd) Schott:  After 37 years working for Kenyon, I am looking forward to retiring in June. My work the past 12 years with Philander Chase Conservancy, and creating Kokosing Nature Preserve, have been especially rewarding. The Conservancy has helped to conserve almost 6,000 acres in a 5 mile radius of Kenyon and was awarded national accreditation by the Land Trust Accreditation Commission in February.  Our two sons and their families live in Columbus so we will have more time with them and to enjoy our granddaughters, ages 1 and 2. We will remain in the area and hope to see you if you are on campus. Still sad we didn’t have our 40th reunion but hope some of you plan to return for the all-alumni reunion in May.

Thomas Parker: My wife and I are enjoying life in Southern California where it rarely rains and drought is here more often than not anymore. I still work for Los Angeles county counsel office, doing land use and property tax work currently. My wife works for a large corporation. It is somewhat hard at first thought to think we graduated 42 years ago, at least for me. No retirement plans pending right now for either of us. I like the Jack Benny rule of being forever 39. My best to the class of 1980!

Dave Carson:
Delighted to report that the younger of my two sons, Drew, married Rachel Mahan on 11/13/21 here in Cincinnati. We had great fun at both the wedding and reception (entertainment by the Cincinnati Brass, check them out) and are even more delighted they live less than 15 minutes away from us here in Cincinnati.

Virginia Calhoun de Millan:  Now retired from teaching and soon to be a grandmother, I had the enormous, if peculiar, blessing of spending an entire autumn and winter in Ohio with my 92 year old parents and my son Andrés Millan ’07. Medical treatment for breast cancer was interspersed with trips to nature reserves, parks, arboretums, gardens, bogs and beaches, in autumn and again under snow. The Cleveland Museum of Art was a nearly daily treat, with its ensuing discussions, internet searches and podcasts about ancient civilizations. We've shared explorations of jazz, observations of the social structures of Wooster, and analyses of love, forgiveness and family. Late night conversations, casual chays and easy hanging out among the 4 of us were unexpected treats.

Oh, and the cancer treatment seems to have been successful, too!

Jeremy Bromberg:  In 2016, I was working as an independent business consultant, supporting mostly professional service firms. Almost exactly two weeks after my high school 40th reunion where we talked about transitions, a business contact called me to ask, “How do you feel about medical marijuana?” So for nearly six years now I’ve been building and running cannabis businesses in New England. My newest employer is planning a more national approach, so my vision will expand as well. Otherwise, I’ve been in MA for 35 years now, which still qualifies me as a newbie. Two grown sons, one building a novel fintech app called Eco, and the other is learning the fine art of cannabis cultivation. Life’s pretty simple. Looking forward to hanging out again with Roger Fillion at industry conferences!

Maria Masucci: I am happy to report that after 5 years in university administration as Associate Dean I am returning to teaching, research and global education. I will be directing Drew's London Semester in the fall and a dreamed of research sabbatical in the spring, including (we hope), a chance to get back to our research station in Ecuador. The pandemic has been brutal there but luckily friends and colleagues have come through. Would love to connect with any of our class in England!

Sarah (Matteson) Hersack:  My husband Steve and I have been living in the Los Angeles area for 20+ years now -- which is crazy: how time flies! I am currently working with a company to integrate Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) into their workplace and business practices -- my focus being internal communications around the effort to provide transparency and change management to employees. It's an exciting area to be working in -- very eye-opening for me. I am consistently inspired by the people I'm meeting in the DEI space and find myself surrounded by smart, sensitive people I learn from every day. My remote workday is shared with our little 10-year-old rescue dog, Mildred, who we adopted last year; we're not sure of her background, but from her behavior it must have been pretty stressful and harsh. So we are -- with great joy -- watching her blossom into a trusting, loving, funny beastie and we're hoping to help her live her best life from now on.

Leslie Marting (Gepfert):  Our family is grateful to have weathered the pandemic without any major issues. I continue to enjoy my work as an interior decorator with my own business, Marlboro Antiques & Interiors. Ltd. My husband Michael is retired from Jones, Day but continues to consult and stay active. My primary volunteer activity is the Garden Club of America and I find my work on the Scholarship Committee very rewarding. Son Geo (Michael Jr ’14) is a VP at Piper, Sandler in NYC, and daughter Pauline is a Marketing Project Manager for the Cleveland Clinic. Hope all are well.

Andrew Bowers:  I seem to be trading in a blue face mask for endless red tape as I retire from teaching. Can I really be this old? Nah! So come by sometime and see if I have managed to perfect the recipe for a Pisco sours.
