Sprin 2022 Class Letters

Class of 1979 Spring Class Letter

Dear classmates,

It’s officially Reunion month on the Hill! Even though 2022 isn’t a milestone reunion year for us, all alumni are welcome back for Reunion Weekend this year (and in the future!) and the fact that alumni are FINALLY able to reunite on campus again after two years of virtual gatherings is something worth celebrating.

Last fall, I hope you heard about (and perhaps supported!) the new Kenyon Access Initiative. We are eight months into our five-year partnership with the Schuler Education Foundation to increase access to Kenyon for exceptional students with limited resources. Our extended Kenyon community has enthusiastically responded by making more than 1,113 gifts to support this unique initiative, helping to create new scholarships that will be awarded to students we are enrolling now. In further great news, applications this year hit another record, up 14% over last year.

I expect you read the news from President Sean Decatur this winter that, in response to calls from students as we approach our Bicentennial, he agreed the time had come to look beyond Lords and Ladies.  The topic is polarizing to alumni; I have heard a variety of comments about this decision.  Should you have an opinion, whatever it may be, please take the time to make your feelings known. Thanks to all of you who have submitted suggestions or other feedback for the process to consider a new athletics moniker. This letter was finalized before the results were known, but you can visit kenyon.edu/moniker to learn the latest.

This spring, the College continued its commitment to integrating environmental stewardship into its curriculum, campus operations and campus culture. They also announced the news that Lisa Schott ’80, who since 2010 has served as managing director of the College’s land trust, the Philander Chase Conservancy (PCC), will step down from that position at the end of June after a nearly 40-year career with Kenyon. This news and more was shared in Kenyon’s new quarterly Green Newsletter. If you don’t already receive it, I encourage you to sign up for it at bit.ly/Green-Kenyon.

As summer approaches, Kenyon is preparing to welcome several groups of alumni back to campus. First, more than 100 members of the Class of 2020 and their families have registered to attend their belated Commencement taking place on the Hill May 22. On May 26, the Classes of 1970, 1971 and 1972 will be kicking off Reunion Weekend a day early with special 50th Reunion programming. And then, as you know, all alumni are welcome back to campus May 27-29 for what promises to be the biggest alumni gathering in the College’s history! If you aren’t able to make it back for Reunion this year, I hope you’ll plan to attend one soon.

All of the excitement and achievement at Kenyon today can be traced, in part, back to our support. Kenyon relies on our gifts to the Kenyon Fund to support every aspect of students’ experience today, from seminars to scholarships. I hope you’ll join me in making a gift today. We know first-hand how a Kenyon education can impact one’s future — not just professionally, but personally. When we support Kenyon’s current and future students, we help make a Kenyon family like ours a possibility for many more.

Thank you!

Class of 1979 Spring Notes

David Troup:   All this talk of reunions brings me back to graduation day of 1979.  The man, the myth, the legend, who is Paul Schoenegge, imparted a bit of wisdom to me on that bittersweet day when I was preparing to leave campus.  He solemnly told me, in the convincing manner that only he can deliver: “Trouper, when your brother Dan drives you down Route 229, DO NOT turn back, no matter how much you are tempted to do so.  Otherwise you’ll never return.”  I followed my great friend’s advice and here we are.  I’d have to think I am on the class of ’79 leaderboard for most return trips to Gambier!  Speaking of Senor Schoenegge, (also a noted Spanish scholar) I have become quite enamored of the language application Duolingo, fervidly going after the possibility of mastering not only Spanish but French as well (my high school teacher Monsieur DeVitto would be stunned, as I checked out of 10th grade French with a solid D).  In another shocking development, I am currently teaching a family friend to drive.  For those of you who have traveled with me behind the wheel, that news may strike you as terrifying.  True story: I may be the only Cincinnati resident who has managed to hit both a Cincinnati Metro bus AND an ACCESS specialized transportation van in separate incidents.

Kathleen Kirk:   I've been performing this February the role of Babs (exactly my age) in the play Life Sucks, by Aaron Posner, which is "sort of adapted from Uncle Vanya by Anton Chekhov," as stated on the play script cover and poster! Perfect title for our times! We all are vaccinated, and so is the audience; they wear masks, we wear clear masks. Life does not suck! (A quote from the play + what I think.) This is at Heartland Theatre in central Illinois, where Scott Klavan once visited as the judge in a play contest!

Stacy Moseley:  After a life and career in Manhattan, I returned to the south with my husband in 2001. We’ve raised 2 swamp babies who are *almost* fully launched: one pursuing music in LA and the other stepping into event management in Boca. Now, I’m deep into a successful career designing playgrounds, happy as a clam and savoring life as a late bloomer.

Jonathan Helitzer:  As the twins prepare to embark on their college journey’s - Gretchen to Washington & Lee and Kirsten to Providence College, we naturally reacted by acquiring puppy Scout, a Pomeranian/Husky mix. Like having a baby. But with a tail. And sharper teeth.  Older kids are doing well - Adam, having graduated HBS several years ago is now running an Electronic Health Records company in Wisconsin. Elaine just finished her first semester at U Michigan Law School where she finds some courses “boring and hard.”

We’ll try and be up in Maine for much of the summer so happy to host for overnights, boat rides or culinary discoveries.

Tom Ford:  50 years on and the more things change, the more they stay the same - "the Toad is concerned." The 50th Anniversary of the Peeps, due to be celebrated during the 2020 Reunion, was pulled before Covid took care of the rest of it. Declined again for this summer, there was no assurance about next year. Apparently, the institution still has trouble wrapping its head around The Peeps Alumni Association being the largest, most active, best organized affiliate group the college has, and is responsible for an endowed scholarship fund. With our reunion being stiff-armed, and the actives being suspended, many of us are withdrawing our engagement with Kenyon for the time being. While I assume this will not make it into the class notes (Editor’s note, it did!), perhaps they will come around for our 45th, if not, this will explain my absence.

Elizabeth Mueller Gross:  Tom Gross and Elizabeth Mueller Gross are grandparents! Simon Slade Alushin was born in November to daughter Emma and her husband. And Simon is perfectly wonderful.

Margaret (Garland) Whitman:  Hello, All! I am living in Baltimore and am so enjoying retired life. My second grandchild is arriving in July and one of my sons is getting married in May, 2023. As I have said way too many times, all 3 of my children went to Denison..... BUT that allowed me to drive over and walk the Kenyon campus---- what nostalgia...such a beautiful place which I have clearly appreciated so much more as I have gotten older. I am planning to attend our #45th.

Hope lots of you will as well! Til then......

Bob O'Connor:  In early March, five Kenyon boys assembled once again at Whitefish Resort in Montana: George Layburn, Noel Cook ’78, Tom Bensen, Jeff Day, and Bob O'Connor. Together they skied, cooked, played music, ate and drank, discussed both trivia and the great issues of the day, and took great pleasure in each other's company.
