Kenyon Class of 2021 Fall Class Letter

Hello friends!

It’s me again. Another year has gone by, and instead of strolling down Middle Path to class, I find myself briskly walking up a busy NYC sidewalk to work. Whatever path you are on, I’d like to share a few changes that have graced our campus.

Do you remember the giant hole in the middle of the West Quad? Filled! Now it’s an underground parking garage, called The 261.

A few more West Quad updates: Lowell House, the new home to admissions and financial aid, is open. Oden Hall, the new social sciences building, will open for instruction next year. They are named after Pulitzer Prize winning poet and Kenyon Alum, Robert T.S. Lowell IV and former Kenyon president Robert Oden (1995-2002).

This semester, 12 members of the Class of 2026 were enrolled through the Kenyon Access Initiative (KAI), a scholarship effort which aims to increase entry for low-income students. Kenyon hopes to eventually enroll 50 students each year through KAI. The College has also increased the budget for the Student Success Fund — emergency grants for which any student can apply.

This year, students will have access to an alternative dining option “downtown,” under the Gambier Deli, called The Peirce Express. It will also house a student-run bar called Flats.

A special congrats to the Music Department for celebrating its 75th “birthday”! To celebrate, the Alumni Council is developing an updated version of the Kenyon songbook which will be available online and distributed at the Reunion Weekend during the all-class sing. Reminder: all alumni are welcome to attend Reunion Weekend, May 26-28.

Despite the time that has passed, I hope everyone still feels connected to 43022. As a graduated class of Kenyon, it is now our turn to contribute to the growth of our shared home on the Hill. If you’re not able to give financially, consider: becoming an alumni volunteer, attending a College event, or submitting a class note.

I wish everyone continued growth, success, and fulfillment in your current and future ventures, and I look forward to hearing about them!

All the best,
Duffy Lemire

Class of 2021 Fall Notes

Hanaa Ibrahim: International Alumni of 2021: I’m so happy to share that with the help of passionate and dedicated alumni, we have been able to establish the Kenyon International Student Mentorship Initiative that aims to guide Kenyon’s international students through professional life after Kenyon. As many of you know, there are a lot of challenges inherent to being an international graduate in the U.S., and our goal directly addresses some of those challenges, including educating students (with the help of the Center for Global Engagement) about a complicated visa system, the confusion that comes with applying for jobs as a non-US citizen, and other complications that international students may face. We had our kick-off ceremony on Saturday, October 22nd, at 4:30pm. It was an alumni-student panel, moderated by myself.

Hannah Petrich: After graduation, I moved up to Alaska and now my full time job is working with sled dogs. I work for the most accomplished dog musher in the world, 5-time Iditarod champion Dallas Seavey, living in a dry cabin at the kennel with 120 of the best endurance mammals on the planet. I help train a group of Iditarod dogs, guide dog sledding tours, and I’ll hopefully get my first mid-distance dog sled race under my belt this winter!
Jamie Sussman: Wishing all my Kenyon friends and family good cheers! Thrilled to announce that I have started a new position at the International Rescue Committee working in their Global Media Team as a Communications Manager.

Jonathan Hernández: This half year was pretty great. Things kept turning up, Jony, and I have the feeling they will continue to do so. I’ve finally reached the part of the fellowship that I’ve been waiting for; I’ve continued to move in enjoyable ways (not always strictly weight lifting, but dancing, walking, and swimming); I’ve made some great new friends and continued to invest in ones that are familiar. Adult life still sucker punches me occasionally, but I feel capable and stable – that’s something I’ve struggled with before. I know this feeling won’t last forever, but I’m happy with the past 6 months. I have a world of updates to share, but I’ll keep them brief. I now canvas for our local politicians, line dance at a country club about an hour away from Kenyon, watch baseball games and soon basketball games, volunteer for a local charity, play squash with the club team, read books, call friends, mentor some latinx students, and am starting a small, professional networking group of upcoming fundraisers. It’s crazy to think I can sum up 6 months in a short paragraph, but those are all the major updates. No mans yet, but that’s ok – I’m a career woman for now (and genuinely, in a very novel way, am ok with focusing on myself) :) Love y’all. Wishing you success, stability, and support. Con amor y ánimo – Jony

Miriam Hyman:
I moved to Portland, Oregon. I am enjoying the moss, the mountains and working (remotely) as a science content writer for HDMZ.

Philip Brain: I’m still working on a publication about the stories that matter to democracy with classmate Harry Clennon, but Spectacles is now a YouTube channel. After more than a year, we’re finally seeing a bit of success, which has been really great. If you’re curious, search for Spectacles — Democracy Matters. And I am living in Santa Monica, CA with my girlfriend of over 3 years, & Cat Perloff ’20. Enjoying the good weather and the beach.

Sarah Greenspon: I am living in New York City. I just started working at a new preschool as an Assistant Teacher.

Thomas Guidotti: Erika Oku and I are living the good life in Ohio. I am at Booz Allen Hamilton in Dayton where I support modeling & amp; simulation contracts for the Air Force. Working with things like missile systems isn’t something I would have foreseen doing after Kenyon but here I am.
