Kenyon Class of 2019 Fall Class Letter
| |
| Happy Fall Kenyon Classmates!
We know you look forward to this letter to learn about what’s going on in our classmates‘ lives; we’re also excited to share some of the news from the Hill this year:
Students will soon have access to a dining option in “downtown” Gambier, when Peirce Express opens in a space under the Gambier Deli. This space will also be home some evenings to a student-run bar known as Flats, helping to provide a non-residences nightlife option. Sounds like The Cove 2.0 to me! Look for more about both of these in an upcoming issue of Kenyon News Digest, and look for me getting a drink here during alumni weekend.
This semester, 12 members of the Class of 2026 were able to enroll as the direct result of donor support for the Kenyon Access Initiative (KAI), a vital scholarship effort to increase access for low-income students. We’re only just getting started and aim to enroll 50 students each year through KAI, in addition to other robust financial aid. This additional diversity in backgrounds and lived experiences will further enrich daily life on campus.
Chalmers Library in the West Quad has quickly become a hub for such connections day and night. Its neighbor Lowell House, home to admissions and financial aid and named for Pulitzer Prize winning poet Robert T.S. Lowell IV ’40, is also now open. Oden Hall, future home to social sciences and named for former president Robert Oden, will open for instruction next year. The 261-space underground parking garage for visitors and employees — with EV charging, naturally — is already helping to ease congestion in the Village without disrupting the beauty of Gambier we all remember so fondly.
To further support all students, the College increased the budget for the Student Success Fund — emergency grants for which any student can apply. They also welcomed Dr. Lynn Hampton to serve in the newly created Director of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion position, providing additional leadership to the daily efforts of ODEI and partnering with Dean Chris Kennerly so he can extend his reach across campus with DEI efforts.
The Music Department is celebrating its 75th year. Alumni Council is developing an updated version of the Kenyon songbook (Kenyon has a songbook!) which will be viewable online soon and distributed at Reunion Weekend during the all-class sing. If you haven’t saved the date yet for Reunion Weekend, remember that all alumni are welcome to attend May 26-28.
I hope you’re now feeling wistful about our own time at Kenyon. I invite you to turn that nostalgia into action with a gift to help make all this possible! Gifts to the Kenyon Fund can be directed toward enrolling the next high-achieving group of students through the Kenyon Access Initiative, broader scholarships and financial aid efforts, athletics, one of the College’s many green centers and more. Please consider making your alma mater and today’s Kenyon students a philanthropic priority this year by giving online at gift.kenyon.edu.
That’s all for the happenings on the Hill!
Thank you!
Kaylin Allshouse

Kaylin Allshouse: My home for the next three months is a Christmas Tree Farm, just an hour from Kenyon. Here, I am working on three feature length horror films with fellow Kenyon alum, Charles Cutler. There is no shortage of hand warmers and fake blood on this set! I am also working on submitting my short film, PARTNR, to film festivals this fall, which was made with the generous support of so many Kenyon alumni and faculty. I am also just getting back from a month-long trip to Bali, Lombok, Bangkok, Japan, and Hawaii with my EDM sisters, Madison McDowell and Sydney Telaak celebrating Madison’s graduation for Law School. We had a great time snorkeling, checking out temples, and zooming in tuk tuks!
Devon Chodzin: Devon just moved to Philadelphia to pursue a master's in environmental planning at the University of Pennsylvania and would love to connect with other professionals in the field!
Ally Cirelli: I am currently in the second and final year of my master’s degree in Art History and Museum Studies at Tufts University. I have also recently been hired as the Graduate Education Fellow at the Tufts University Art Galleries and am interning remotely with the curatorial department of the Baltimore Museum of Art. In more exciting news, fellow Kenyon alum, Nathan Grosh and I got engaged! We’re so excited and are planning our nuptials for the fall of 2023.
Alejandra Colmenares: My live’s work is my personal relationships. Thanks Kenyon for that.
Oscar Dow: Well, the post-covid depression has subsided (even though we are still deeply in a pandemic, get vaccinated people) and I got engaged (to a guy #gayrights)! Still living in LA, and have no plans on ever, ever leaving this horribly dystopian utopia.
Diego Fajardo: Since graduation I had been working at the Children's Museum of Indianapolis to run programs and facilitate galleries for families and serve as a member of the DEAI (Diversity, Equity, Accessibility, Inclusion) Task Force where I worked directly with the president of the biggest children's museum in the world to recommend new standards to build a better work environment. Now, I am moving on to become the Collections Manager at the Museum of Miniatures, still in Indianapolis, where I will manage cataloguing the collection of miniatures and curate exhibits at our mini Minis Museum.
Elise Neidecker: This summer, Zach Sawicki ’16 and I left Boulder and headed east for New Hampshire, where I've just started a Masters in Agricultural Sciences under the mentorship of the awesome Analena Bruce. I'm lucky to get to geek out about the food system every day while enjoying the agriculture-rich area that is New England. If you happen to know any small-scale or alternative farmers in the region, I'd love to connect!
Hannah Orbach-Mandel: I finished up my Master of Public Policy in May. Spent some of the summer traveling in Argentina and Mexico and visiting Kenyon friends in Atlanta before closing out my time on the east coast with a Boston summer. Now I am in Sacramento, California working as a policy analyst at the California Budget and Policy Center. Hoping to find some NorCal Kenyon grads!
Nadia (Torok) Reiher: Happily attending med school at the University of Utah, where I'm in my 2nd year. Adjusting to city life with my husband, Tyler, and our cat, Lady Pancake (spoiler, I prefer rural). During my first year, I ran into a Kenyon alum and fellow Bacteria Lab member doing their residency at Primary Children’s Hospital, which was a cool small world moment.
Anna Tancredi: Austin Barrett ’18 and I are living in Los Angeles. I just started as a graphic designer at HDMZ, a PR firm for science & healthcare companies. I am also a very proud aunt to my nephew Jules, born in August. We love when Kenyon alumni and students come say hi or ask us about the film industry!
Peyton Thomas: Parker Subia ’18 and I recently moved to the DC Area where I am working toward a PhD in neuroscience at Georgetown University. I am researching neuroimaging and computational modeling. Our dog, Toby, misses his huge backyard in Mount Vernon but is happy to live close to his friends: fellow Kenyon alumni, Sydney Telaak, Elizabeth Barrowman ’21, and Catherine Smith ’20, as am Parker and I. We love hosting BBQs in our backyard and plan to have more this fall so reach out if you’re in the area!
Elise Tran: I’ve decided to become a false eyelash girl. The winged eyeliner is no longer enough.
