Kenyon Class of 2018 Fall Class Letter
| |
| Dear classmates,
We know you look forward to this letter to learn about what’s going on in our classmates’ lives; we’re also excited to share some of the news from the Hill this year:
This semester, 12 members of the Class of 2026 were able to enroll as the direct result of donor support for the Kenyon Access Initiative (KAI), a vital scholarship effort to increase access for low-income students. We’re only just getting started and aim to enroll 50 students each year through KAI, in addition to other robust financial aid. This additional diversity in backgrounds and lived experiences will further enrich daily life on campus.
Chalmers Library in the West Quad has quickly become a hub for such connections day and night. Its neighbor Lowell House, home to admissions and financial aid and named for Pulitzer Prize winning poet Robert T.S. Lowell IV ’40, is also now open. Oden Hall, future home to social sciences and named for former president Robert Oden, will open for instruction next year. The 261-space underground parking garage for visitors and employees — with EV charging, naturally — is already helping to ease congestion in the Village without disrupting the beauty of Gambier we all remember so fondly.
This year students will also soon have access to a dining option in “downtown” Gambier, when Peirce Express opens in a space under the Gambier Deli. This space will also be home some evenings to a student-run bar known as Flats, helping to provide a non-residences nightlife option. Look for more about both of these in an upcoming issue of Kenyon News Digest.
To further support all students, the College increased the budget for the Student Success Fund — emergency grants for which any student can apply. They also welcomed Dr. Lynn Hampton to serve in the newly created Director of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion position, providing additional leadership to the daily efforts of ODEI and partnering with Dean Chris Kennerly so he can extend his reach across campus with DEI efforts.
In other news, the Music Department is celebrating its 75th year. Alumni Council is developing an updated version of the Kenyon songbook (Kenyon has a songbook!) which will be viewable online soon and distributed at Reunion Weekend during the all-class sing. If you haven’t saved the date for our Reunion Weekend, please do! I hope to see you on the Hill May 26-28.
I hope you’re now feeling wistful about our own time at Kenyon. I invite you to turn that nostalgia into action with a gift to help make all this possible! Gifts to the Kenyon Fund can be directed toward enrolling the next high-achieving group of students through the Kenyon Access Initiative, broader scholarships and financial aid efforts, athletics, one of the College’s many green centers and more. Please consider making your alma mater and today’s Kenyon students a philanthropic priority this year by giving online at gift.kenyon.edu.
I hope you’ve enjoyed hearing the news from the College this fall. I have certainly enjoyed (as always) hearing from those of you who submitted class notes for this letter (see below). I encourage folks who haven’t updated us with one recently to consider submitting a quick life update for the next batch of notes in the spring.
Thank you!
Camisha James

Evan Gee: I'm still in Austin, Texas working on my PhD in political theory at UT. I spent some time in Washington, DC this summer with Henry Brill ’19, as well as Lindsay Stoner, Paul Murphy, and Anni Coonan and many other Kenyon friends. We're all very excited for reunion next year and can't wait to see everyone!
Houlder Hudgins: I'm still living in Richmond VA, enjoying the river city life during the summer and working at the United Network for Organ Sharing. I also just reached the halfway point in my Master's degree program in Public Health at GWU. My younger brother, Dell ’22, graduated from Kenyon this past spring and it was great to be back on campus for that, and I'm looking forward to seeing folks at reunion next year!
Lanise Beavers: I moved to Chicago at the end of 2021 and have been having a blast enjoying the Windy City!
Sadiq Jiwa: I just moved back to Phoenix, AZ where I'm training and competing in a bunch of golf tournaments. I will be in and around the Southwestern part of the United States for the greater part of the next 8 months so reach out if you're around that area. It's been an exciting road through the pro golf journey and I've found myself playing in some more elite level events and qualifiers and slowly climbing up the ladder to the top.
There's so much travel involved with playing in these events. Just over the last three months I've been to Vancouver, Seattle, Chicago, Reno, Vegas, Phoenix, Salt Lake City, and San Francisco. Over the next three months I'll be making trips to Vegas, Napa, Tampa Bay, and San Diego! Wish me luck!
Natalie Kane: As of the end of summer, I've just finished a six-month season in the artistic/literary department at Roundabout Theatre Company in NYC. I've loved becoming more immersed in the theatre community here, and am looking forward to getting back to freelance directing and dramaturging this fall and winter. Hoping to get to Kenyon for a visit sometime soon!
Juliet Levy: I am currently living in Denver with my boyfriend and our dog. After earning my MA in Musicology from the University of Denver in the Fall of 2021, I completed an internship with the company that makes Operabase and CueTV. Following that, I started a Customer Support position with MakeMusic (Finale/Garritan/SmartMusic) outside of Boulder. Looking forward to getting back to Gambier for our 5th reunion! P.S. Support K-SWOC!!!
Samantha Palicz: This past spring, I graduated from The George Washington University School of Medical and Health Sciences with my Doctorate in Physical Therapy and I am now practicing as a Pediatric Physical Therapist in the Washington. D.C. area!
Indigo Rinearson: I've been working as a software engineer at Axios since April, living in Seattle, and baking pies for fun.
Nate Rosenberg: I began a new role in the Office of Admissions and Recruitment at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Starting in August, I was promoted to Manager for Deposit to Enrollment where I specifically am working with students who are starting early in the summer or fall, students who defer their enrollment, and leading our final transcript collection and review process. Outside of work, when I'm not emailing students or reading hundreds of applications, nothing brings me more joy than cooking dinner for and spending time with Conor Tazewell '15, Sarah Jensen, and Claire Oxford who also live in Madison. On, Wisconsin!
Henry Uhrik: In June, I completed my MFA in Illustration and Visual Culture at Washington University in St Louis and am now teaching comics and illustration at Rochester Institute of Technology. Go Tigers.
Camisha James: I recently moved to Houston area where I am teaching middle school Chinese.
Caroline (Popiel) Valdez is living in New Haven, CT, with her husband and two cats, and working at Sikorsky/Lockheed Martin as a software test engineer.
