Kenyon Class of 2015 Fall Class Letter

Hi classmates,

Fall was my favorite season on campus, so I always feel extra nostalgic when the mornings and evenings start feeling crisp and cool. I deal with this nostalgia in part by wearing my Kenyon swag everywhere, which is fun because I’m inevitably met with joyful calls of “Yay Kenyon!” and “Gambierrrrr!” from strangers while I’m jogging in the park or getting groceries. As my neighbor recently said when she saw me wearing a Kenyon shirt, “Kenyon people really love Kenyon.”

There are so many reasons for that enduring, shouting-to-strangers-wearing-Kenyon-swag love. One is Kenyon’s commitment to continuous improvement. I know you’re eager to read what’s going on in our classmates’ lives in the notes below, but I encourage you check out this letter, too, to learn about just a few of the exciting things that are happening on the Hill:

This semester, 12 members of the Class of 2026 were able to enroll as the direct result of donor support for the Kenyon Access Initiative (KAI), a scholarship effort to increase access for low-income students. The goal is to enroll 50 students each year through KAI, in addition to other robust financial aid.

Chalmers Library in the West Quad has quickly become a hub (this video made me kind of jealous that I won’t get to study there). More recent and upcoming additions include new homes for admissions, financial aid, and social sciences. There’s also a new underground parking garage on campus, and a dining option/student-run bar space under the Gambier Deli is coming soon (will there be mac and cheese wedges?!).

To further support all students, the College increased the budget for the Student Success Fund — emergency grants for which any student can apply. They also welcomed Dr. Lynn Hampton to serve in the newly created Director of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion position, providing additional leadership to the daily efforts of ODEI and partnering with Dean Chris Kennerly so he can extend his reach across campus with DEI efforts.

In other news, the Music Department is celebrating its 75th year. Alumni Council is developing an updated version of the Kenyon songbook (Kenyon has a songbook!) which will be viewable online soon and distributed at Reunion Weekend during the all-class sing. If you haven’t saved the date yet for Reunion Weekend, remember that all alumni are welcome to attend May 26-28.

Feeling nostalgic yet? I invite you to turn that nostalgia into action by getting involved, whether by becoming an alumni volunteer, writing a class note, attending a virtual or in-person event (I’ve enjoyed going to several Pittsburgh alumni events!), or joining me in making an annual gift at gift.kenyon.edu.

I hope you’ve enjoyed hearing the news from Kenyon this fall. As always, I’ve enjoyed hearing from those of you who submitted class notes for this letter (see below)—seems like I’m not the only one who’s been enjoying all the mini reunions that have come with a slew of recent Kenyon weddings! I encourage folks who haven’t updated us with a note recently to consider submitting a quick life update for the next batch of notes in the spring.

Class of 2015 Fall Notes

Franny Alston: Franny lives in Washington DC with her fiancé and two dogs, Atticus and Maeve! Franny is within walking distance from fellow Kenyon alums, Isobel Rosenberg and Greta Greising ’16. Franny is a third-grade teacher at the St. Stephen's & St. Agnes School in Alexandria, Virginia, and she looks forward to her October 2023 wedding!

Meredith Bentsen: Following the Dobbs decision this summer, Meredith and fellow alum Tommy Brown ’13 couldn’t sit by and do nothing. So they brought together a group of Kenyon graduates to host a fundraiser to expand abortion access across the US. The group, including Lara McMahon ’14, Colin Finnegan, Cat Straley ’17, and Virginia Falzon ’14, raised over $7,000 for Just the Pill and gathered over 50 people to discuss how we continue the fight for access.

Claire Brautigam is writing this class note on a couch with Kaitlin Donnelly! McBride forever. She recently graduated with her MBA from Carnegie Mellon and is enjoying having free time again. Summer highlights included dancing with friends at assorted Kenyon weddings and unintentionally growing eggplants.

Audrey Davis has just arrived in the UK to start a Master's degree in Renaissance and Early Modern Studies at the University of York. She is enjoying the brisk fall weather and the fully functional public transportation system. She does not enjoy tea, but is getting good at pretending to.

Matthew Eley is a married man and thus even more domestic than he was previously, living once more along the San Francisco Bay. He is disappointed that changing the school's moniker had no effect on our U.S. World News & Report ranking and urges the administration to consider more drastic measures, such as replacing trustees with owls as well.

Jake Genachowski: Nick Gasbarro and I love to just chill out and watch sports.

Alyssa LaFrenierre: I married Christian Josephson ’16 back on June 11, 2022 at Kenyon College! Along with family and other friends, we had around 50 Kenyon Alumni there to celebrate with us! It was the best day!

Sofia Mandel started business school at UCLA Anderson. She loves living in LA and being close to her Kenyon friends out here!

Colin McMahon: I am officially a homeowner and resident of Berkley, Michigan. I started a new residency in Emergency Medicine at Sinai Grace Hospital on the West side of Detroit. I've had a busy and joyous summer meeting up with many members of the Kenyon Lacrosse team to celebrate the marriage of multiple teammates and to cut a rug on the dance floor like the sweaty Old Kenyon days of yore.

Katie Moss: Since leaving Kenyon, Katie has been teaching 5th, 6th, and 7th graders. After an unexpected and quick turn at the end of the summer she officially left the classroom for a new role at a new school. She was joyful to join the team at the Sacred Heart Schools of Chicago as their new After School Assistant Director and Assistant Director of Student Life.

Caroline Dultz, now Caroline Przybylowski (say that five times fast), is living in the Greater New York City area where she works in fashion marketing, overseeing fashion and beauty digital advertising and publisher partnerships for Macy's. She was married in Jersey City, New Jersey, Saturday, September 24th, 2022.

Caroline Shipman resides in New York City, where every day is a battle against the vicious, plague-carrying rats threatening to take over the once handsome metropolis. She works at a law firm that represents venture capital funds, and in her dealings with opposing counsel, realizes that maybe there are worse things than the rats. In her free time, Caroline likes getting berated by the instructors at overpriced workout classes, searching for the best sushi in the city whilst trying to avoid mercury poisoning from consuming too much tuna (quite the balancing act), and watching the latest TV iterations based on certain popular fantasy universes. Are these shows that cause confusing feelings about elves and taboo romantic relationships necessary, or even good? It’s debatable. But at least they provide an hour-long distraction from ruminating on the climate crisis. Caroline also enjoys hanging out with her Kenyon friends who live in New York, even though they are sometimes bad influences. Famously magnanimous, she forgives their delusions that all these years later, they might act in Cove-like ways in the real world.

Janie Simonton is still living in Chicago with Nate Epstein ’16. Last summer, they moved to an apartment a block from the beach and have been enjoying that immensely during the 4 months out of the year it's viable to do so. Janie enjoyed being a bandwagon Bengals fan this past Super Bowl and forcing all of her non-Ohioan friends to try Skyline Chili Dip. Besides that, same as always. Reach out if you're passing through town to say hi!

Hannah (Cooper) Stoyel: Life in London is picking up speed! Our baby, Felicity, is a baby no more -- we have a toddler, which is fun (and a little terrifying some days!). After a tough time post-partum, I landed a dream job this year working with the English Institute of Sport working with the British Olympic Diving team -- that has been amazing. I’m learning to juggle work and motherhood. Feeling very grateful for the support around us as we support our little family. Lots of love to the Kenyon fam.

Anna (Sweeney) Taylor: I just saw Devil Wears Prada and wow, kind of an instant classic. I also figured out that Newports can help a sore throat. Also I’m deep in the skincare game so let me know if you need recs.

Samuel Teeter: I have been hanging out in Austin, TX with classmates Nat Katz and Hetty Borinstein, and working for Cycorp, a not-at-all-sinister artificial intelligence company that is attempting to recreate human common sense using a language of logical propositions. When I'm not doing that, I'm writing a novel about my great-grandfather and practicing medieval combat in the park.

Margaret Tucker and Liam Cardon ’16 got married on May 14th, 2022! They were so excited to share their special day with so many Kenyon friends.
