Kenyon Class of 2016 Fall Class Letter
| |
| Kenyon Class of 2016,
I hope everyone is doing well and has found the time to enjoy the change of seasons. Living in Albuquerque, I’ve enjoyed lots of fall fun including the Balloon Fiesta, green chile roasts, and the changing of the leaves on the trees along the Rio Grande.
I know you’re looking forward to learning more about what’s going on in our classmates’ lives, but I also wanted to share some news from Gambier this year:
This semester, 12 members of the Class of 2026 were able to enroll as the direct result of donor support for the Kenyon Access Initiative (KAI), a vital scholarship effort to increase access for low-income students. Kenyon is only just getting started and aims to enroll 50 students each year through KAI, in addition to other robust financial aid. This additional diversity in backgrounds and lived experiences will further enrich daily life on campus.
Chalmers Library in the West Quad has quickly become a hub for such connections day and night. Its neighbor Lowell House, home to admissions and financial aid and named for Pulitzer Prize winning poet Robert T.S. Lowell IV ’40, is also now open. Oden Hall, future home to social sciences and named for former president Robert Oden, will open for instruction next year. The 261-space underground parking garage for visitors and employees — with EV charging, naturally — is already helping to ease congestion in the Village without disrupting the beauty of Gambier we all remember so fondly.
This year students will also soon have access to a dining option in “downtown” Gambier, when Peirce Express opens in a space under the Gambier Deli. This space will also be home some evenings to a student-run bar known as Flats, helping to provide a non-residences nightlife option.
To further support all students, the College increased the budget for the Student Success Fund — emergency grants for which any student can apply. They also welcomed Dr. Lynn Hampton to serve in the newly created Director of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion position, providing additional leadership to the daily efforts of ODEI and partnering with Dean Chris Kennerly so he can extend his reach across campus with DEI efforts.
In other news, the Music Department is celebrating its 75th year. Alumni Council is developing an updated version of the Kenyon songbook which will be viewable online soon and distributed at Reunion Weekend during the all-class sing. If you haven’t saved the date yet for Reunion Weekend, remember that all alumni are welcome to attend May 26-28.
I hope you’re now feeling wistful about our own time at Kenyon. I invite you to turn that nostalgia into action with a gift to help make all this possible! Gifts to the Kenyon Fund can be directed toward enrolling the next high-achieving group of students through the Kenyon Access Initiative, broader scholarships and financial aid efforts, athletics, one of the College’s many green centers and more. Please consider making your alma mater and today’s Kenyon students a philanthropic priority this year by giving online at gift.kenyon.edu.
I hope you’ve enjoyed hearing the news from the College this fall. I have certainly enjoyed hearing from those of you who submitted class notes for this letter. I encourage folks who haven’t updated us with one recently to consider submitting a quick life update for the next batch of notes in the spring. Enjoy the notes below!
Thank You,
Lauren Earls

Jacqueline Arkush: Jackie started law school this fall and hopes to one day practice labor law, so that she can help unionization efforts like the one currently being fought by the Kenyon administration.
Kaitlin Creamer: In July 2022, Kaitlin successfully defended her doctoral dissertation and earned a Ph.D. from the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, University of California San Diego. While Kaitlin’s dissertation focused on efforts to culture new marine bacteria and study their genomics and the evolution of the natural product chemicals that they produce (i.e. drug discovery from the sea!), her Ph.D. journey included other adventures including a research cruise aboard the EV Nautilus using an ROV to collect deep-sea sediment, animal, & rock samples. Kaitlin is now a postdoctoral scholar at University of California Berkeley & the Innovative Genomics Institute investigating the genomics of microbes important for carbon sequestration processes. Though she is sad to leave the SoCal beaches behind, Kaitlin is excited to explore more of the NorCal area over the next few years!
Katie Goldman: Katie and Jake Bates are happily living in Austin, Texas! This year they added a new member to their family, an adorable charcoal lab named Bear. They can't wait to have him inducted into the newest class of Owls!
Andrew “Peter” Hardy: Dear Kenyon College, stop pouring money into meaningless infrastructure projects in a bid to attract rich students and use that money to pay for scholarships and increased wages for staff, faculty, and student workers. You seem to care more about your brand as a SLAC than you do about the actual students and workers in your employ. Do better.
Cardon Liam: Margaret Tucker ’15 and Liam Cardon got married on May 14th, 2022! They were so excited to share their special day with so many Kenyon friends.

Elna McIntosh: Elna moved in with her boyfriend (not a Kenyon alum, sorry to disappoint) in June and taught herself how to rollerblade - the goal was to get good enough to join a roller derby team but it'll take longer than anticipated! Elna is still the librarian at Challenger, and focusing on her art and comics - if anyone in the Denver/Springs area wants to collaborate or take a look let Elna know!
Bradley Raynor: Bradley had a busy year! After finishing his graduate program in International Affairs in 2021, he fulfilled a lifelong goal and joined the Foreign Service. Bradley will be serving in Cameroon for his first tour and cannot wait to see one of the few waterfalls in the world that empties directly into the ocean. But as exciting as that news was, it was nothing compared to the moment when Alison Pratt ’17 said yes to Bradley’s proposal to marry her after a truly wonderful seven years of dating. Bradley and Alison started their adventure together at Kenyon (notably not near Uganda), and now it would seem the next step in their journey will be taking them a little bit closer to Uganda.
Emily Sakamoto: Emily married Thomas Reardon ’17 on April 23 at The Inn at Little Washington in Little Washington, Virginia in a small family-only ceremony.
Jennifer Seely: Jennifer is coming up on a year as an Assistant Attorney General for the Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation, working on air, water, contaminated sites, and environmental health. She is grateful for trails, mountains, and water in Anchorage!
Haley Townsend: Haley and Noah Winters ’15 are expecting their first baby (a girl!) this January. Hopefully she will become a future Kenyon student-athlete!
Peter Wear has been living in the Lakeview neighborhood of Chicago for the past six years. They recently began working as a Content Marketing Strategist at a company focused on driving organic traffic towards companies focused on sustainability and clean technology. Peter lives with their partner of five years, Tommy, as well as their two guinea pigs, Chia and Tofu. Peter continues to read voraciously, and has gotten into street photography as well as writing poetry in their spare time. Recently, they gave tarot readings at a block party that led to them learning far too much about the psychological fragility of their neighbors, and advises all alumni to avoid pursuing pastimes that encourages neighbors to scream at them about the dangers of the occult. Peter is happy.
