Sprin 2023 Class Letters

Class of 2010 Spring Class Letter

Dear classmates,

We approach the midpoint of 2023 with two exciting developments on the horizon for Kenyon: the announcement of our 20th president later this summer and planning for our bicentennial in 2024. The alumni-led presidential search committee has assembled input from alumni and others in the Kenyon community into a leadership profile that outlines the qualities sought in Kenyon’s next president. For the latest on the search, visit kenyon.edu/presidentialsearch. As for the bicentennial, a call for proposals is underway! If you have an idea for a special project for the College’s 200th birthday celebration, you can apply for funding by emailing bicentennial@kenyon.edu.

In other college news, Oden Hall — named for Kenyon’s 17th president Robert A. Oden, Jr. (from 1995-2002) — opened in the spring as home to faculty from sociology, political science, history and philosophy. Anthropology is also represented with a dedicated laboratory space and Kenyon’s Center for the Study of American Democracy will also call Oden Hall home. Oden contains more than 50 offices for faculty, is fully accessible and houses a 280-seat auditorium, bridging the gap between the capacities of Rosse Hall and the Community Foundation Theater. Being in the Events Office here at Kenyon, I've had the privilege of touring the space and thinking about how we can use it for our upcoming 195th Commencement this May. I can't wait for your next visit to Kenyon to see it in person too!

In preparation for the bicentennial, members of Alumni Council have been busy working on an update to the Kenyon Songbook, which can now be viewed online at kenyon.edu/songs. Are you ready to warm up your vocalizers and get ready to burst into one of your favorite Kenyon tunes? This fifth edition of “Songs of Kenyon” continues a 166-year effort by the College and Alumni Council to both preserve and carry on Kenyon’s tradition of song. Published in 1859, 1866, 1906 and 1957, the first four editions chronicle the songs that defined generations of Kenyon students. The songs chosen for this edition were selected “because they both unify us in our past and point us towards our future.”

Speaking of unifying, alumni are also actively connecting on the CDO’s Kenyon Career Connections group on LinkedIn. It’s a space to share career-related opportunities and resources or promote career and continuing education discussions to the Kenyon community. I encourage you to check it out if you haven’t already!

I hope many of you participated in the College’s recent “Kenyon FunDay” to support today’s students via the Kenyon Fund. I enjoyed seeing the fun photos come in from regional events around the country, as well as watching the funds come in for today’s student over the course of the 36-hour giving challenge. There’s still time to make a gift if you missed the festivities! Visit kenyon.edu/funday to make your gift and join in the fun(d).

Up next for many Kenyon alumni is Reunion Weekend May 26-28, which should be a celebration to remember, as always. Then on to our yearlong bicentennial celebration! There will be lots of opportunities for alumni like us to participate, so stay tuned. I hope you will carve out some time to make it back to the Hill to celebrate our alma mater’s big 2-0-0 in whatever way feels meaningful to you.

Sincerely,
Sam Turner

Class of 2010 Spring Notes

Ryan Ackerman: Ryan and their wife Jaiden had a baby this year! Welcome to the world Nova Elowynn Ackerman!

Sasha Grumman: I am living in Houston and have been busy building my two businesses the past 2 years! I have a Private Chef business that has blossomed into so many new adventures. I have taken on consulting opportunities, worked with daily private clients and my private work even took me to Aspen, CO for two weeks over Christmas. I also have my focaccia business called Sasha’s Focaccia and we are making some big moves this year - stay tuned! Otherwise, happily living with my sweet chocolate lab, Aspen and celebrating 3 years booze free this year!

Tracey (Farris) Kincheloe: I got married in April to my quarantine partner, Chris, and we’re living in Louisville, KY, where I’m teaching. We’re very open to visitors; the first Saturday in May is a particularly fun time around here.

Saskia (Warren) Leeds, soon to be Dunadair: The last year has been huge, and this one will be so as well! After 3 years at the African Wildlife Foundation, I was offered an opportunity with USA for UNHCR I couldn't refuse. My first six months have been excellent. I also got engaged last fall, to be married March 22, 2023 in an intimate ceremony. Shortly after the wedding, we will be moving out of DC to a small artistic community in VA! Wish us luck!

Tomas Piskacek: I got my master’s degree in economics from the University of Amsterdam in 2013. After that I worked for the Dutch central bank, McKinsey & Company in Prague (my hometown), or as a (part-time) high-school teacher of economics. In 2018, I left for Asia to become a forest Buddhist monk and walk the Middle Path (not the Kenyon one this time). Since then, I have spent most of my time in a forest monastery in Malaysia practicing meditation. I am ordained in the Theravada tradition, although my main interest is early Buddhism.

Alexandra Shaeffer:
After living in the Midwest and East Coast for the last 15+ years, I'm returning back to the SF Bay Area for the long haul. Still working as a freelance research coach but also teaching college French and developing a fully online low-cost first-year French class that will be launched in the fall.

Geoffrey Toy: Caroline Crowell ’11 and I have moved to Anchorage, Alaska, where I'm working for an environmental law firm and getting outside as much as possible!

Will VandenBerg: Happy to share that I married Eliza van Heerden over a spectacular Labor Day 2022 weekend in Bar Harbor, Maine. We were lucky to share the weekend with so many great friends and family from Kenyon. Eliza and I continue to live in NYC and met through a mutual friend from Kenyon!
Michelle von Hirschberg: I was recently promoted to Director of Business Development at Jacobs, where I'm responsible for building our global Life Sciences business. I'm excited to take on a new challenge and play a more visible role in developing our clients. My 3 1/2-year-old daughter Ellie recently started preschool, and it's been amazing to watch her blossom. We are looking forward to traveling to Germany with her this year - our first international trip since before covid. We've been trying (with much frustration) to get a new deck built since last year and are hoping to finally sit on it this spring. I can't wait to return to the Hill in May for Chamber Singers Reunion!

Harry von Kann: Greetings from Maryland. Currently operate a small fitness business in NW DC that I cofounded with two friends in 2013 called DC Health Coaches. My wife Julia Ramos and I moved into a new home last year in Silver Spring. Our two-year-old son Emery loves exploring the local park and keeps us present. Look forward to my 15-year reunion in 2025 and a return to Gambier!
