Sprin 2023 Class Letters

Class of 2009 Spring Class Letter

Dear classmates,

We approach the midpoint of 2023 with two exciting developments on the horizon for Kenyon: the announcement of our 20th president later this summer and planning for our bicentennial in 2024. The alumni-led presidential search committee has assembled input from alumni and others in the Kenyon community into a leadership profile that outlines the qualities sought in Kenyon’s next president. For the latest on the search, visit kenyon.edu/presidentialsearch. As for the bicentennial, a call for proposals is underway! If you have an idea for a special project for the College’s 200th birthday celebration, you can apply for funding by emailing bicentennial@kenyon.edu.

In other college news, Oden Hall — named for Kenyon’s 17th president Robert A. Oden, Jr. (from 1995-2002) — opened in the spring as home to faculty from sociology, political science, history and philosophy. Anthropology is also represented with a dedicated laboratory space and Kenyon’s Center for the Study of American Democracy will also call Oden Hall home. Oden contains more than 50 offices for faculty, is fully accessible and houses a 280-seat auditorium, bridging the gap between the capacities of Rosse Hall and the Community Foundation Theater. I can’t wait to check it out in person the next time I’m back on the Hill!

In preparation for the bicentennial, members of Alumni Council have been busy working on an update to the Kenyon Songbook, which can now be viewed online at kenyon.edu/songs. Are you ready to warm up your vocalizers and get ready to burst into one of your favorite Kenyon tunes? This fifth edition of “Songs of Kenyon” continues a 166-year effort by the College and Alumni Council to both preserve and carry on Kenyon’s tradition of song. Published in 1859, 1866, 1906 and 1957, the first four editions chronicle the songs that defined generations of Kenyon students. The songs chosen for this edition were selected “because they both unify us in our past and point us towards our future.”

Speaking of unifying, alumni are also actively connecting on the CDO’s Kenyon Career Connections group on LinkedIn. It’s a space to share career-related opportunities and resources or promote career and continuing education discussions to the Kenyon community. I encourage you to check it out if you haven’t already!

I hope many of you participated in the College’s recent “Kenyon FunDay” to support today’s students via the Kenyon Fund. I enjoyed seeing the fun photos come in from regional events around the country, as well as watching the funds come in for today’s student over the course of the 36-hour giving challenge. There’s still time to make a gift if you missed the festivities! Visit kenyon.edu/funday to make your gift and join in the fun(d).

Up next for many Kenyon alumni is Reunion Weekend May 26-28, which should be a celebration to remember, as always. Then on to our yearlong bicentennial celebration! There will be lots of opportunities for alumni like us to participate, so stay tuned. I hope you will carve out some time to make it back to the Hill to celebrate our alma mater’s big 2-0-0 in whatever way feels meaningful to you.

Sincerely,
Austin Faught

Class of 2009 Spring Notes

Alexandra (Roland) Armstrong: We welcomed our sweet daughter Marais in September 2022. Big brother, Lochlan (2 years) has had mixed feelings about it but has mostly adjusted well!

Diana (Ruskin) Black: Having spent the past several years as the Academic Engagement Librarian at Mary Baldwin University, Dave Black just accepted a faculty position at James Madison University. He will serve as the Digital Preservation Specialist for the Furious Flower Black Poetry Center. Diana has been working since last summer as an instructor at Silver Line Theatre Exchange, teaching kids acting and improv. Together with five colleagues, she created and performed a benefit cabaret to fund scholarship money for local high schoolers seeking summer enrichment programs in the performing arts. They raised over $12K for the cause, booking a host of upcoming gigs under their new moniker: Shenandoah Cabaret.

Thomas Boucher: I'd like to send my best wishes to the class of 2009. I hope you're all doing well. I've been in Redding, CA for 8 years. My wife and I are busy taking care of two young kids and an old house.

Eric Dunn: Eric was married to his now husband, Donovan Dyson, in August 2022. In November 2022, they adopted their dog - Rubus, named after a delicious Zinfandel wine. He and his husband purchased a home outside of Washington, DC where they plan on making many happy memories together.

Priscilla Erickson: I had a very Kenyon experience this fall when I traveled to Maine to visit several friends including Jenny (Howard) McKee. The night before my trip, I realized that I had forgotten to book a rental car. It was a holiday weekend during peak fall foliage, so there were no rental cars available in the entire state. However, Kenyon friends to the rescue: Yana (Forney) Davis ’07 was able to hook me up with her neighbor's extra car. I was amazed at the kindness of a complete stranger to loan out their car, and grateful for my network of Kenyon friends to help me out in a pinch!

Austin Faught:
My wife and I welcomed our second child, a daughter, into the family this past fall. We will be moving back to Central Ohio this spring where I took a position at The Ohio State University. I’m looking forward to helping the Department of Radiation Oncology open up their new proton therapy center.

Alexandra Lastowski: Andrew Hoagland and Alex welcomed their second child in December - a baby boy named William Michael Lastowski Hoagland (say that 3x fast). Alex and her former new apartment roommates, Karen Thompson, Meghan McClincy, and Emma Mueller, have been texting up a storm in excitement for Emma’s debut book, At Sea!

Nick Lyons:
I recently traveled to Los Angeles for President’s Day Weekend to see my fellow ’09 classmate Max Reisman. We were lucky enough to meet up with a few more Kenyon Alum at the Dresden (Swingers Bar). As a recently divorced individual, my advice to everyone is find someone who looks at you the way Drew Miller ’10 looks at Adam Toltzis ’10. Great to see Kenyon people everywhere!

Elizabeth (Gottschalk) Miller: Tim ’08 and Elizabeth are still living in south Florida, where it's still way too hot pretty much all the time. Elizabeth was recently promoted and is now running a library, so y'all can just go ahead and start calling her Imperator. Tim is still a professor at FAU and currently attempting and largely failing to detect which students' papers have been written by AI. All three kids are thrilled to be back in school now that even the youngest is vaccinated, although not as thrilled as mom and dad are to have them out of the house once in a while.

Linda Pear: Dan Takacs
and Linda are trying to juggle three kids and a dog while also running a small Montessori school in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

Matt Peck: Matt still resides in the Roscoe Village area of his sweet home, Chicago. In March, he celebrated his first anniversary working for the sports media company CHGO. In January, he went to Paris to cover a Bulls game there. In between the "work" stuff, he and his colleagues had time to see some sights, eat great food and drink all the wine. Trip of a lifetime!

Justin Cox
and Johanna Ralsten-Cox welcomed a son, Charles Whitman Cox, on December 17, 2022.

Anna (Williams) Yonge: I got married on November 19, 2022 to Jason Yonge. In attendance at the wedding were fellow '09 classmates Carolyn Barer, David Black, Diana (Ruskin) Black, Grace Lee, and Christina (Kucher) Penderghest.
