Sprin 2023 Class Letters

Class of 2008 Spring Class Letter

Dear classmates,

We approach the midpoint of 2023 with two exciting developments on the horizon for Kenyon. (Well three, if you count our upcoming reunion!) The other two are: the announcement of our 20th president later this summer and planning for our bicentennial in 2024. The alumni-led presidential search committee has assembled input from alumni and others in the Kenyon community into a leadership profile that outlines the qualities sought in Kenyon’s next president. For the latest on the search, visit kenyon.edu/presidentialsearch. As for the bicentennial, a call for proposals is underway! If you have an idea for a special project for the College’s 200th birthday celebration, you can apply for funding by emailing bicentennial@kenyon.edu.

In other college news, Oden Hall — named for Kenyon’s 17th president Robert A. Oden, Jr. (from 1995-2002) — opened in the spring as home to faculty from sociology, political science, history and philosophy. Anthropology is also represented with a dedicated laboratory space and Kenyon’s Center for the Study of American Democracy will also call Oden Hall home. Oden contains more than 50 offices for faculty, is fully accessible and houses a 280-seat auditorium, bridging the gap between the capacities of Rosse Hall and the Community Foundation Theater. I can’t wait to check it out in person the next time I’m back on the Hill!

In preparation for the bicentennial, members of Alumni Council have been busy working on an update to the Kenyon Songbook, which can now be viewed online at kenyon.edu/songs. Are you ready to warm up your vocalizers and get ready to burst into one of your favorite Kenyon tunes? This fifth edition of “Songs of Kenyon” continues a 166-year effort by the College and Alumni Council to both preserve and carry on Kenyon’s tradition of song. Published in 1859, 1866, 1906 and 1957, the first four editions chronicle the songs that defined generations of Kenyon students. The songs chosen for this edition were selected “because they both unify us in our past and point us towards our future.”

Speaking of unifying, alumni are also actively connecting on the CDO’s Kenyon Career Connections group on LinkedIn. It’s a space to share career-related opportunities and resources or promote career and continuing education discussions to the Kenyon community. I encourage you to check it out if you haven’t already!

I hope many of you participated in the College’s recent “Kenyon FunDay” to support today’s students via the Kenyon Fund. I enjoyed seeing the fun photos come in from regional events around the country, as well as watching the funds come in for today’s student over the course of the 36-hour giving challenge. There’s still time to make a gift if you missed the festivities! Visit kenyon.edu/funday to make your gift and join in the fun(d). I hope you’ll join me in making a stretch gift this year in honor of our reunion.

Speaking of reunion, I hope to see many of you at Reunion Weekend May 26-28, which should be a celebration to remember, as always. I can’t wait to catch up with you all, relive old memories and share a few laughs together. Then on to our yearlong bicentennial celebration! There will be lots of opportunities for alumni like us to participate, so stay tuned. I hope you will carve out some time to make it back to the Hill to celebrate our alma mater’s big 2-0-0 in whatever way feels meaningful to you.

Sincerely,
Rebecca Sundling

Class of 2008 Spring Notes

Elliot Forhan
I started serving in January a two-year-long term as a member of the Ohio House of Representatives, representing a district on the East Side of Cuyahoga County in Northeast Ohio. Thanks to the fellow alums, former teachers and other members of the college community who supported our campaign last year. Go Owls!

Craig Getting
Craig and his wife Laura welcomed their son Simon this past October. Simon's had a wonderful first few months: meeting friends and family, cheering on the Philadelphia Phillies and Eagles, and generally being a happy little guy. He's also excited to see the Hill for the first time this coming May!

Teresa Girolamo
I began a position as a tenure-track assistant professor in the School of Speech, Language & Hearing Sciences at San Diego State University in January '23. I direct the Brain, Environment, and Language Lab, which aims to understand how individual differences in language (at the levels of brain and behavior), together with environmental factors (social determinants of health), influence outcomes in autistic racially and ethnically minoritized individuals. I would be happy to provide research opportunities for Kenyon students. I have my Kenyon education to thank for my ability to think critically and develop novel directions for research in both language science and autism research.

Andrew Irvin
This year marked a decade in Fiji, where I've continue developing climate change policy for countries across the Pacific. In 2023, I start PhD. work at the University of Melbourne where I've received a scholarship and an advance to write a near-future hard sci-fi short story collection. My wife and I finally got a commercial kitchen up and running for her business, alongside a US Embassy-funded art center where I've led a creative writing course the last semester. Our son turned nine, and our twins are now teenagers (somehow - time flies).

Daniel Leeds
I spent the past year producing the documentary series Gutsy for Apple TV+ with Secretary Hillary Clinton and Chelsea Clinton. It took me all over from NYC to LA to Arkansas and Paris, but unfortunately not Gambier. Maybe season 2!

Karen (Singerman) Martin
Hello! I'm now more than half-way done with my studies to become a Rabbi on the Cincinnati campus of Hebrew Union College and plan to graduate in May of 2025. Stewart Martin ’06 and I are still living in Cincinnati with our two sons, and we're looking forward to our reunion in May!

Elly (Deutch) Moody
Elly and her husband Brent welcomed their second daughter Kira in November. She is a happy, healthy baby and her big sister Maya (3) loves her immensely! The Moodys live in Evanston, IL. where Elly is from and they are hoping to find their forever home in the area this year.

Nick O’Brien
Nick lives with his girlfriend in Albuquerque, NM, a place he never thought he’d be but enjoys quite a bit. He’s spent the last few years riding bikes and working at tech companies; he now runs his own copywriting service and is terrified of being rendered obsolete by AI. He still plays drums a lot, but misses doing it at the Horn Gallery.

Jessie Rubenstein
My wife, kids, and I are doing well in cold (for us) Phoenix. I’m still working in Tempe as the Religious School Director at a Reform synagogue. My wife (Xan) is now a journeyman electrician. The kiddos (Helena-7 and Leon-3) are doing well in school/daycare and are full of smiles! I’m looking forward to it warming up here and being able to shrug off the jackets. If you’re in the Phoenix area, let me know! We’d love to host you in our chaos den for dinner.

Amy (Zimmerman) Stewart
I am living in Denver with my beautiful daughter Georgia, 2.5 years old, Husband Sean ’07 and French Bulldog, Thumper. We have been here for 4 years and never get sick of the mountains but do miss all our friends in Chicago.
