The Melnychuk/Procak Nursing/Medical Endowed Scholarship

Dianne Melnychuk, Class of 1970 developed a love of learning at an early age. Education was woven into her family’s story long before she was born. Both her maternal and paternal great-grandparents had the same belief system – to ensure their children could read and write. Dianne’s immigrant grandparents understood the power of education. They took English classes to strengthen their skills, instilling that same commitment to learning in their children. Education was more than schooling; it was opportunity, dignity, and hope for the future.

Though born in Pennsylvania, Dianne’s father, Walter and his older sister started school speaking little English. Her father often recalled that it was his third-grade teacher who brought his language in line. In high school, Walter was awarded a Pennsylvania Senatorial Scholarship — an opportunity that made him the first in his family to attend college. His parents had laid the groundwork, and he carried that foundation forward, setting a powerful example for the next generation of the Melnychuk/Procak family to value, respect, and pursue education. Dianne, her brother, and cousins all pursued education beyond high school.

Growing up, Dianne’s mother also encouraged her to choose a profession - powerful advice that ultimately led her to Cedar Crest College. She graduated in 1970, continuing a family tradition rooted in perseverance and learning.

To continue that legacy, Dianne established the Melnychuk/Procak Nursing/Medical Endowed Scholarship, supporting students whose stories mirror her own — students driven by determination, family sacrifice, and a belief in the power of education.

The scholarship came to life through a gift of appreciated stock, inherited from her mother. By giving stock that had grown in value over time, Dianne was able to make a meaningful impact while honoring her family’s journey. Appreciated stock gifts allow donors to support causes they care deeply about, often providing greater benefits than a traditional cash gift. For Dianne, the gift was about more than financial stewardship — it was about gratitude, remembrance, and paying forward the opportunities she received.

Dianne hopes her story inspires empowerment and possibility. In an email, informing her brother, nephews and Melnychuk/Procak cousins of the scholarship, Dianne stated: “We owe it [our education] to our great-grandfathers, our grandparents, a scholarship, and our own hard work. I am blessed that I can provide Cedar Crest students with a scholarship.”
