Open Enrollment
Special Enrollment Period for Voluntary Benefits through The Hartford
Effective October 1, 2022, as part of BAYADA’s commitment to continuously improve benefit offerings, The Hartford will be replacing Aflac as your carrier for these voluntary benefits:
  • Short-Term Disability (STD) Insurance
  • Accident Insurance
  • Critical Illness Insurance
  • Hospital Indemnity Insurance
During the special enrollment period September 7 to September 23, you may enroll in each of these benefits with no medical questionnaire to complete. In the event of a covered illness or injury, each could provide you with separate benefits, helping to fill financial gaps and easing the impact of unexpected medical costs for you and your family.
Enroll in your benefits no later than September 23 by visiting BAYADA.mybenefits.pro or calling 877-318-1764.
Voluntary Short-Term Disability (STD) Insurance
  • STD Insurance helps protect your income in the event of a disabling illness or injury such as a heart attack, pregnancy, or back injury. It offers the financial support you need so you can focus on your recovery.
Accident, Critical Illness, and Hospital Indemnity Insurance
  • The cash benefits provided by Accident, Critical Illness, and/or Hospital Indemnity Insurance are independent from any claims or coverage provided by medical insurance. This cash can be used to help cover the bills or added expenses that your medical plan may not cover, like copays, deductibles, or any other living expenses.
  • The Accident Insurance and Critical Illness Insurance plans both include an annual $50 Health Screening Benefit for qualified health screenings for you and any covered dependents.
Important considerations to keep in mind
  • These plans are currently administered by Aflac.
  • To continue your existing STD Insurance coverage, you must re-enroll with The Hartford during this special enrollment period September 7 to September 23. If no elections are made during the special enrollment period, STD coverage will end on September 30, 2022.
  • No action is needed to continue your coverage for Accident, Critical Illness, or Hospital Indemnity Insurance. These coverages will transfer automatically to The Hartford.
  • If you wish to enroll in these benefits, or make a change to your current elections, you must speak with a benefit counselor:
Option 1: Visit BAYADA.mybenefits.pro and reserve a time for a benefit counselor to contact you directly over the phone.
Option 2: Call 877-318-1764, and a benefit counselor will be available to assist you Monday through Friday, 8:00 am – 6:00 pm ET.
If you would like to change or enroll in voluntary benefits, don’t forget to enroll or schedule your call with a benefit counselor no later than September 23, 2022!
BAYADA Connects through Contests for 25 Years
For the past 25 years, BAYADA has carried on a rich tradition of celebrating caregivers and clinicians who demonstrate compassion, excellence, and reliability in their work through an annual companywide contest. This year’s Contest for Clinicians is all about connecting—to our purpose, our core values, our clients, and our colleagues!
Beginning Monday, September 19 and for the following ten weeks, please join us and Connect4Good by recognizing and rewarding our nurses, aides, therapists, technicians, and all the other amazing BAYADA direct care clinicians for the exceptional work they do.
As part of our digital transformation, the Connect4Good Contest for Clinicians is taking place on the all-new BAYADA Celebrates employee platform. Now, contest entries can be given by simply sending eCards. BAYADA office employees, caregivers and clinicians may submit entries by logging onto BAYADACelebrates.com, clicking the “Send and View Recognition” tile, and sending an eCard to the BAYADA caregiver or clinician of their choice whenever The BAYADA Way is demonstrated in their work.
Clients, their families, and community members will also be encouraged to participate. And as an added bonus, BAYADA caregivers and clinicians who send an eCard to a colleague providing direct client care or office team member will automatically receive a contest entry for themselves.
So, get ready, get set to … Connect. Recognize. Reward.

Become a Nurse with BAYADA
Congratulations to Sarah D., First to “Advance to LPN”!
Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) Sarah Dessalines of Cranston, Rhode Island is now the first to become a nurse with the help of BAYADA’s $5,000 Advance to LPN Scholarship!
Sarah has been working as a BAYADA CNA for her local Rhode Island Assistive Care (RAC) office while she attended a 12-month accelerated nursing program at Lincoln Tech. When BAYADA’s new scholarship opportunity came along, RAC Director Lindsey Jamiel jumped on it:
“We knew Sarah was already in nursing school, and we were thrilled to be able to help her pay down her bill and get into the Advance to LPN program!”
Sarah Dessalines
At 25, Sarah Dessalines made a career change to home health care.
“Right from the start, I loved connecting with clients and nurses and couldn’t wait to do more. I definitely feel like I’m in the right place. I’ve never felt so happy about work because of the support system I have. They see my hard work, and that makes me feel very appreciated and want to keep going.
“I like that I can make my own schedule to balance work and school, and now higher pay as a nurse is going to be a huge deal for me.
“I’m looking forward to the Nurse Residency and simulation labs—they say it’s very fun. There’s still a lot more you can do with training and skill sets, and I’m ready for it!”
The future is bright!

With $5,000 paid directly to her school tuition (tax free!), Sarah graduated her licensed practical nurse (LPN) program in July. In August, she passed her NCLEX-PN exam and got her permanent LPN license. This month, she starts working in the one-year BAYADA Nurse Residency Program with a cohort of other new nurses.

“I know Sarah will make a great BAYADA Nurse because she has the things you can’t teach—compassion, caring, and kindness,” said Lindsey. “We’re sorry to see her go, but so happy for her!”

“It’s our job to support and invest in our own people,” said Sarah’s new Rhode Island Skilled (RIS) Director Rick Boschwitz. “And a lot of talented people want to go to nursing school but don’t have the financial means to take that first step.”

“This is our chance to help employees earn more and advance their career in this organization and help clients and families who need nursing care. If we’re doing it for any other reason, we’re in the wrong business.”

Ready to earn while you learn?
If you are interested or already in school to become an LPN, contact your service office today to apply for the Advance to LPN Scholarship. Applications are accepted throughout the year.

Workday
New Workday Home Page
Please be advised that a new Workday home page will go live on Saturday, September 10, as part of an ongoing upgrade project to enhance and improve the user experience.
The new home page has been reviewed and refined by a group of BAYADA employees to make sure it meets BAYADA's needs as best as possible.
Some key enhancements of this Workday update:
  • Items in your inbox that require your action are now front and center on your home page. You can minimize this window at any time.
  • The list of all apps has been consolidated into a preview of four, and you can pick which four are your “top apps.”
  • Search results are broken out by categories, and you can pick which categories to save as your favorites. You can revert back to the Classic Search view if you prefer the current Workday search functionality.
Please contact your manager or the IT Service Desk at 215-757-9000 with any questions.
National Hispanic Heritage Month
National Hispanic Heritage Month Kicks Off on September 15
National Hispanic Heritage Month was established to honor the substantial contributions of Hispanic and Latinx Americans. Every year, from September 15 through October 15, we celebrate the histories and cultures of Americans whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central and South America.
How you can celebrate
BAYADA is committed to creating a culture and environment of diversity, equity, and inclusion, and we encourage you to celebrate National Hispanic Heritage Month both individually and as a team.
Here are a few ideas to help you get started:
A brief history
This observance began in 1968 when the United States Congress passed a law authorizing the President of the United States to proclaim annually the week of September 15 to be National Hispanic Heritage Week.
The dates were chosen to correspond with the celebration of independence in several Latin American countries:
  • September 15: Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua
  • September 16: Mexico
  • September 18: Chile
In 1988, Congress amended the bill to establish National Hispanic Heritage Month.
Hispanic Heritage Month celebrates the cultures and histories of several unique countries. Take this quiz to test your knowledge of each country’s flag.
Significant contributions to health care and medicine
  • Ildaura Murillo-Rohde, PhD (1920 - 2010) was the first Hispanic dean of nursing at New York University. Born in Panama, she moved to the United States in 1945 to study nursing. As a fierce advocate for the education and empowerment of Latina women, she created the National Association of Hispanic Nurses (NAHN) in 1975, concerned that the American Nursing Association (ANA) was not meeting the needs of Hispanic nurses.
  • Jose Celso Barbosa, MD (1857 - 1921) was the first Puerto Rican to earn a medical degree in the United States. He moved from Puerto Rico to New York in 1875 and applied to Columbia University, but was denied admission due to his race. He went on to graduate as valedictorian in 1880 from the University of Michigan. He was the first person to conceptualize our current health insurance system, wherein employers paid a fee for the future health care needs of their employees.
  • Severo Ochoa, MD (1905 - 1993) was born in Spain and became a US citizen in 1956. His work in molecular biology led to breaking the human genetic code, and in 1959, he became the first Hispanic American to win the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine.
An important distinction
Although many use the terms Hispanic and Latinx interchangeably, these words have distinct meanings. Hispanic refers to people descended from Spain and Spanish-speaking countries, while Latinx is a gender-neutral term that refers to American citizens of Latin American descent. For example, the term Latinx includes people of Brazilian descent, who are not Hispanic because Brazil’s primary language is Portuguese.
