Sprin 2022 Class Letters

Class of 2018 Spring Class Letter

Dear classmates,

It’s officially Reunion month on the Hill! Even though this year isn’t a milestone reunion year for us, all alumni are welcome back for Reunion Weekend this year (and in the future!) and the fact that alumni are FINALLY able to reunite on campus again after two years of virtual gatherings is something worth celebrating. The sense of isolation that has accompanied the past two years has been challenging to navigate, but having the support of you all, my Kenyon family, has continued to brighten the darkest parts of this pandemic for me — thank you!

Last fall, I hope you heard about (and perhaps supported!) the new Kenyon Access Initiative. We are eight months into our five-year partnership with the Schuler Education Foundation to increase access to Kenyon for exceptional students with limited resources. Our extended Kenyon community has enthusiastically responded by making more than 1,113 gifts to support this unique initiative, helping to create new scholarships that will be awarded to students we are enrolling now. In further great news, applications this year hit another record, up 14% over last year.

Hopefully you saw the news from President Sean Decatur this winter that, in response to calls from students as we approach our Bicentennial, he agreed the time had come to look beyond Lords and Ladies. Thanks to all of you who have submitted suggestions or other feedback for the process to consider a new athletics moniker. This letter was finalized before the results were known, but you can visit kenyon.edu/moniker to learn the latest.

This spring, the College continued its commitment to integrating environmental stewardship into its curriculum, campus operations and campus culture. One exciting way this is happening is that Kenyon is refraining from new commitments in specialized private investment funds that focus on fossil fuels — expecting that less than 1% of Kenyon’s endowment portfolio will be invested in fossil fuels by 2030. This news and more was shared in Kenyon’s new quarterly Green Newsletter. If you don’t already receive it, I encourage you to sign up for it at bit.ly/Green-Kenyon.

As summer approaches, Kenyon is preparing to welcome several groups of alumni back to campus. First, more than 100 members of the Class of 2020 and their families have registered to attend their belated Commencement taking place on the Hill May 22. On May 26, the Classes of 1970, 1971 and 1972 will be kicking off Reunion Weekend a day early with special 50th Reunion programming. And then, as you know, all alumni are welcome back to campus May 27-29 for what promises to be the biggest alumni gathering in the College’s history! If you aren’t able to make it back for Reunion this year, I hope you’ll plan to attend one soon.

All of the excitement and achievement at Kenyon today can be traced, in part, back to our support. Kenyon relies on our gifts to the Kenyon Fund to support every aspect of students’ experience today, from seminars to scholarships. I hope you’ll join me in making a gift today. We know first-hand how a Kenyon education can impact one’s future — not just professionally, but personally. When we support Kenyon’s current and future students, we help make a Kenyon family like ours a possibility for many more.

Thank you!
Parker Subia

Class of 2018 Spring Notes

Parker Subia - Hi all! Hope everyone is doing well! As we head into the summer months let me know if you're going to swing by Kenyon. Peyton Thomas ’19 and I are still in Mt. Vernon and would love to catch up!

Dana Oakes - ‘22 is looking to be an exciting year of change after 2 years of near lockdown due to Covid. I got into Duke’s DPT program and will be starting in the fall. This spring I’m teaching skiing up at Keystone, CO, and will be hiking in Europe with my mom before starting school. Hope all are doing well and are able to get out and about doing the things they love!

Rebecca Frank - I’m finishing up a third year living in France and my first year working as an elementary school English teaching assistant near Avignon, France. I’m enjoying continuing to immerse myself in French culture, perfecting my language skills, exploring the beautiful region, and soaking up the sun of southern France!

Anika Rodriguez - Disney lied. It is not the happiest place on earth, Kenyon is. My time at Kenyon was magical - the friendships made and lessons learnt were timeless. Enjoy your time on the Hill, because shit gets real after you move that tassel to the left. But also, don’t worry about shit getting real, because Kenyon gives you all the necessary skills to succeed and kick ass! :)

Brooke Kohn is currently living in NYC and plans to begin working on her Doctorate in the fall.

Katherine Samples - Henry Powers and Katie Samples are thrilled to announce their engagement. Henry and Katie met their freshman year during orientation week at Kenyon. Katie and Henry currently live in Knoxville, TN and will be getting married in April 2023.

Madeline Frank is currently living in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, where she is in her first year of a dual Masters program in Social Work and Public Health at UNC. She has been very lucky to have a whole Kenyon squad in the area!

Harry Justus - Hej from Denmark! I've been since graduating, first as a student at the University of Copenhagen, and now as a Project Manager at TechBBQ, helping to put on the largest annual event for startups in Scandinavia. If you're ever visiting the (sometimes) frozen north, drop me a line!

Zoe Case - I am currently enjoying a very snowy winter here in Boston, Massachusetts where I work at MIT and live with my cat, Oscar (who himself was rescued from a backyard in Mount Vernon, Ohio). In August I will be finishing up my time here in Boston and moving to Krems, Austria to pursue a master's in Higher Education with an Erasmus Mundus scholarship funded by the European Commission! After Austria, I will have opportunities to travel to Finland and China before finishing the degree in Germany in 2024. Let me know if you're in the EU and we can meet up!

Mary Liz Brady - I moved to Cambridge, MA in September of last year and have been enjoying life in Boston since! Also in September, I began working fully remote as a Research Analyst for a financial tech company called Symend. In November of 2021, I traveled to Raleigh, NC, to run a half marathon with fellow Kenyon alum, Kara Braun. We both crushed our goal times and even though I dropped my phone down a storm drain (I got it back, don't worry), it was a great time! I've loved seeing so many Kenyon alums in Boston so if you're around - reach out! Would love to get a beer/coffee!

Natalie Kane - Hope everyone is doing great! This winter I've finally moved into New York, and am thrilled to be back working on in-person theatre in the city. Most recently I choreographed and assistant directed a new musical, Show Me Eternity, for its premiere at the New York Theater Festival.

Isabel Landers - I opened my own hair studio in Pittsburgh in February! If you’re in the Bloomfield/East Liberty area stop by Dye by the Sword. Sam (Roschewsk) and I also bought a house last year so I guess we’re permanent Pittsburghers now!
