Class of 2017 Spring Class Letter
| |
| Dear classmates and friends,
I was lucky enough to reunite with a few of you recently at Grayson Ponti’s wedding in Dallas—congratulations again by the way! Being there and seeing old friends reminded me of how far we have come in the few short years since we graduated. The lives we lived at Kenyon, and pre-pandemic, feel both distant and close. These moments of reunion and transition are beautiful to me because for a few days we get to exist in a space between these lives. We get to remember who we were, while celebrating who we have become together. Wherever you are on your journey post-Kenyon, I hope I get to see you on the Hill soon!
The people that constitute Kenyon are special. Over the last two years of the pandemic I have received consistent love and support from my community of Kenyonites. If anything, in navigating the waters of a two year pandemic I have learned the importance of staying connected to the people that make us feel whole. For all of those who have been this for me—thank you.
There are many ways in which Kenyon is also changing! You have likely seen the news from President Decatur this winter that, in response to calls from students, it is time to look beyond the “Lords and Ladies” and select a new moniker. Thanks to all of you who have submitted suggestions or other feedback for the process. We finalized this letter before the results were known, but you can visit kenyon.edu/moniker to learn the latest.
Last fall, Kenyon introduced the Kenyon Access Initiative, a five-year partnership with the Schuler Education Foundation to increase access to Kenyon for exceptional students with limited resources. The Kenyon community has enthusiastically responded by making more than 1,113 gifts to support this unique initiative, helping to create new scholarships that will be awarded to students we are enrolling now.
As we look to the future, Kenyon is also committing to environmental stewardship in its operations, reducing investments in fossil fuels to less than 1% by 2030. This news and more was shared in Kenyon’s new quarterly Green Newsletter. If you don’t already receive it, I encourage you to sign up for it at bit.ly/Green-Kenyon.
This month will certainly be busy at Kenyon! More than 100 members of the Class of 2020 and their families have registered to attend their belated Commencement taking place on the Hill May 22. On May 26, the Classes of 1970, 1971 and 1972 will be kicking off Reunion Weekend a day early with special 50th Reunion programming. And then, as you know, many of us will be back on campus May 27-29 for what promises to be the biggest alumni gathering in the College’s history!
All of the excitement and achievement at Kenyon today can be traced, in part, back to our support. Kenyon relies on our gifts to the Kenyon Fund to support every aspect of students’ experience today, from seminars to scholarships. I hope you’ll join me in making a stretch gift this year in honor of our reunion. When we support Kenyon’s current and future students, we help make a Kenyon family like ours a possibility for many more.
Thank you and see you soon! Seth Reichert

Class of 2017 Spring Notes
| |
Sarah Lloyd - I’m excited to announce that Alex Seaver and I got engaged in New York City in February!
Caitelin McCoy is still living in New York City and has transitioned to a career in real estate, working as a salesperson and the Operations Manager with the Bogard NY Team at SERHANT.
Kyra Green - I recently moved from Brunswick, Maine to Arlington, Virginia after accepting a role at Georgetown University. I am serving as the inaugural Assistant Director of DEI for the Graduate School of Arts & Sciences. I look forward to seeing where this new journey takes me!
Elana Spivack - I'm living in New York City and working as a science journalist for the site Inverse. I got my masters from NYU this past December. I still think about hash brown triangles.
Drew Meeker - Graduated from SCAD in Savannah last year with my MFA; and now working in 3D Animation for a previs film studio under various companies like Sony, Warner Bros, and Marvel.
Joia Felton - Happily engaged to Max Pierce!
Liam Horsman - After spending 2020 on Ed Markey's campaign, I'm now working in his Senate office and working to pass a state millionaire's tax that would help fund public education and transportation here in Massachusetts.
I'm also endlessly impressed and inspired by the advocacy and bravery of Kenyon student workers, and Kenyon should recognize KSWOC and end the College's contract with Jones Day, the law firm that served as counsel for Trump's 2016 and 2020 campaigns.
Eleanor Lopatto - I accepted a new position as Program Assistant with the Kennan Institute at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars.
Emma Schurink - I'm enjoying life in the woods of Maine, spending my time in a variety of ways. I'm an Empowerment Coach (Certified Spiritual & Life Coach), guiding people to move through limiting beliefs and fears to connect with their intuition and lead a meaningful and authentic life. If you're feeling stuck, unsure or maybe on a path that doesn't feel good, reach out! You can learn more about my approach at soulwindsempowerment.com. I'm also a current student of Somatic Experiencing®, working towards becoming a practitioner. It's an amazing approach to healing trauma, which I'm excited to dive into deeper. I also work for a non-profit in town working with at-risk youth and housing insecurity. I'm merging my work for them with my empowerment work and will be developing/leading a program to empower high school students in rural Maine. I'm also an artist, making charcoal drawings. Check out my instagram @emmaschurinkart. I do commissions so if you're interested, reach out :)
Jenna Wendler is in crunch time preparing to graduate from American University in May 2022. She is unsure what is more brutal: revising a thesis project, or applying to jobs. She will also be presenting two projects this spring: a paper at AU's Mathias Student Research Conference in March, and a portion of her thesis at Florida State University's Graduate Art History Symposium in April.
Emma Brown - I've dedicated the last year to volunteering full-time for Annunciation House, a refugee shelter at the border between El Paso, Texas and Ciudad Juárez, Mexico. I coordinate a warehouse there that can provide for the basic needs of up to 500 guests while they begin the difficult process of applying for asylum. It's been one of the most challenging and fascinating experiences of my life, and I can now speak Spanish about as well as a toddler.
Ben Grannis - I am back east in Connecticut with my folks for a couple of months while I rest my knees. To date, I have ridden 5,826 miles and raised over $35,000 to fight distracted driving and to benefit Text Less Live More. I will be back on the road in April - follow along! EyesUpRide.com @EyesUpRide. Happy almost Spring!
Ethan Fuirst is getting by.
Gianna (Biaggi) Anderson - Gianna and Oscar Anderson have moved back to Oscar's hometown of Licking, Indiana, and are currently bootstrapping a new business venture, Splat!, that produces high quality straws used for artificial insemination in cows. Their passion for artificial insemination runs deep - and the two have been partnering on these efforts since 2017! Oscar is particularly gifted at understanding our cattle's ovulation cycles. They've also adopted 7 small kittens together.
Jenner McLeod - Hi Everyone! Hope you are all doing well. I am finishing my graduate program in Educational Leadership and Policy Analysis at UW-Madison in May and just started working at the UW-Madison Business School in their admissions department. I also recently started a fitness company, True Line Fitness, where I teach virtual Foundation Training classes so I am staying busy. Hopefully I will see some of you at the reunion this spring!
Mollie O’Leary - I’m currently living in Seattle. I’ll graduate with an MFA in poetry from the University of Washington this coming June, 2022. I miss attempting (and failing) to write poems at Kenyon, usually in a Wiggin Street Coffee booth.
Tianqi (Julieanna) Luo - Had a blast visiting my close Kenyon friend towards the end of 2021 and is attending a Kenyon friend’s wedding in March! So grateful for the everlasting friendships that Kenyon brought to me. I have also relocated back to midtown Manhattan for my new job and am living in Upper West Side. Would love to reconnect with Kenyon people in the NY area!
Nathaniel Shahan is looking forward to more bike rides with Jack Zellweger this summer. He can't believe it has been 5 years already, etc., etc.
Katherine Connolly - I know you've all been waiting to hear, and yes--- I finally got around to watching No Time to Die. I was obviously devastated by the ending but in many ways I have come to peace with the significance it gives to the narrative arc of the films in general. Cheers.
Seth Reichert - This past fall I moved to Los Angeles to pursue my Master’s Degree in Urban Planning at UCLA and have been enjoying a winter full of sunny days! During the rare times that I'm not studying or working I like to play Dungeons and Dragons with a band of intrepid adventurers (Henry Quillian, Katherine Connolly, Chandler Davis, and Kayla Glazer) and try to make a little music.
Claire Naughton - After a few years of bushwhacking through the freelance jungle after moving to France in 2018 without realizing I'd be staying (iykyk), this place that used to make me roll my eyes and feel like an outsider has become my home. I now run my own freelance writing business specializing in content creation for American and international clients across several sectors including travel, education, language learning, and small business professional. I also adopted a runty black cat who exclusively chews on leather shoes and my laptop charger cord for attention. She's the light of my life.
Nick Maryan - Still holding it down in Chicago living with Max Siegrist ’16 in Wicker Park as of the writing of this note. As reported in the last note our old roommate Zander Nethercutt ’16 bought an apartment in Logan Square and allows Garrett Stalker ’15 to squat for a nominal fee and share closet space with Zander's cat "Catty". As always, I have been hanging out with Connor Merley on the weekends until he kicks me out of his house on Friday and Saturday nights. Over the Summer/Fall we played Rec League Softball and I was lucky enough to add fellow Alumni Darius Loghman ’19 and his new roommate Jake Zalenski ’20. In September we had our Fantasy Football trip to San Diego, CA to celebrate our Champion Casey Rosenfeld, and we were joined by myself, Connor Merley, Connor Bingham, Tyler Roldan, Jono Chafe, Connor Farrell, Michael Arman ’18, Alexander “Ales” Pinkus, Pete Dakich, and finally Mike Roberts. When we are lucky enough, between work and school we are graced with our Grad School Star Ben Payner ’15, and when our other Grad School Star Julia Plottel isn't traveling the world/country living her best life. Every month the Kenyon Chicago Alumni Board puts together a nice little happy hour and have been intermittently graced with the presence of Marli Volpe ’19 and Mary Grace Detmer ’19 who never want to leave. My freshmen year roommate Dave Thoensen has decided to return to the nest and watch over me from a distance much like he did our Freshmen Year in McBride 103. Looking forward to another wonderful St. Paddy's day where rumors are swirling that Ben Mackessy (’15? Maybe ’16? Who knows.) is making a triumphant return to the city, as well as Jono Chafe who just can't stay away from the big city life that's not afforded in Cleveland, OH. Lastly, cannot wait to make our return for our 5-year College Reunion this Memorial Day Weekend! See you there!
